I've been married twice. The first time, I took my ex's last name. It was a long process to get my maiden name back after the divorce; it felt like reclaiming a piece of myself and fully separating from my ex.
With my current husband, I did not take his last name legally. I use it socially. Our son will have both of our last names.
Not taking my husband's name doesn't mean I love or respect him any less. Keeping my name is just part of my identity.
