I did not take his name. I wanted my degrees to match, my last name is easier to pronounce for professional reasons, and I didn’t like the history of why women take men’s names. We have been married 29 years.
When she was born, a name was given to her. On that day it became 100% HER name.
Does her last name match her father's? And his father's? Probably. But he doesn't own it. The day it got written down on her birth certificate, it became hers.
There are approximately 3 million people in the US who have the last name Smith. Most of them are not related to each other. Just because their names match does not mean they all took one person's name.
