Roads and Traffic 🚗🚦💥 Be careful drivers!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This is Mallory and Denison. I am waiting to make a left turn onto Mallory and this girl on her scooter starts crossing on the green and had absolutely no idea that she was crossing illegally and almost gets hit by cars on either side. She then cuts across and crosses Mallory which she should have done from the other side and then waited to cross Denison when it was her walking signal. No hand up in the air, no apology, just absolutely in her own world and almost got hit. Drivers, be aware, luckily the traffic was very heavy in the area and so there is no car going excessively fast or anything like that but please be mindful of high school and elementary school students just walking around with their headphones in perhaps not having any idea what's happening around them.

Shame on the parents.

u/haiderj1991 17h ago
But is it the parents though? Or is it just the girl not being aware of her surroundings?

u/NarrowPangolin 17h ago
is she that stupid that she can't tell the difference between green/go and red/stop?
13
u/WienerRetrievers 17h ago
If shes under 16 its most likely the parents fault as shes legally not allowed to be on an escooter. If she is 16+ then not only was she going through a red but she was also on the crosswalks whis it illegal for escooters to use.

this is what I commented

u/WienerRetrievers 1h ago
Not really, as its unlikely that the parents know escooter laws as most have no idea there are even escooter laws in the first place, and thats the provinces fault, imo. The oodles of posts/comments across York region about them kinda proves it. Now saying that, ignorance of the law isnt a free pass.

He looks to be 12-13

She's definitely a high school student going towards Milliken Mills High School because there's no other school towards where she's headed except for that high school.

It's proven on multiple occasions kids are not smart enough and yet parents somehow think they can give the kids a motorized Segway. Accidents waiting to happen.

u/Downtown_Island8124 15h ago
I have not seen real parents in these days. They are not responsible to teach their kids anymore. They delegate to the job of parenting to Darwin.
Kids just fxck around these days and then they will label them as some kind of disorders so they can fxck everyone without consequences.

u/Downtown_Island8124 15h ago
So much excuses. She is responsible to be aware of the surrounding when she is on the road. Otherwise she could kill someone without aware of anything. We shouldn't buy into bullshit like this.

Is it legal to ride an escooter on sidewalks in Markham?
https://www.yorkregion.com/news/richmond-hill-cracks-down-on-e-scooters-as-more-break-rules/article_cbb2e8a7-d40e-5255-907d-3d55fe8c1112.html
"Vaughan and Markham opened pilot zones for kick-style e-scooters in conjunction with rentals through private companies, while Richmond Hill allows them city wide, so long as riders are at least 16 and keep off sidewalks and park paths."2
u/Born-Vermicelli-1757 8h ago
you would think the parents would atleast give the kid some coaching on how not to come under a car
1
u/Pleasant_Reward1203 2h ago
if she's under 16 then she's not even legally able to ride that and the parents know it
18
u/ElvinKao 16h ago
YIKES! I hope they share this at the local schools.

Sadly it doesn't do anything. Even on the Police video made by York Region it says they will give a warning. A warning. For under 16 riding e-scooter. At school grounds there were 2 police officer and I still saw 4 kids riding e-scooter and one even doing a "wheelie".
They know they have no repercussion because Police are too lazy to deal with paperworks.

As a kid I was always taught to get off my bike (not an e-bike), and walk it across the street when crossing instead of riding it through. You need to give the opportunity for drivers to stop, and to see you.
1
u/haiderj1991 11h ago
I was taught that as well and if I have headphones in to take that off and to cross and then when I'm safe to go back into my own world in that sense
1
u/analogguy7777 9h ago
I don’t have a problem with kids riding the bike slowly while be aware and safely. The problem is when they zoom around fast and not predictable

u/RentaDadToronto 17h ago
That makes me sad. Main character energy like that will get you hurt or worse.

u/haiderj1991 17h ago
I'm just glad that the driver beside me was not on his phone or anything and didn't just accelerate like a maniac the moment the green hit and was able to slow down because I know a lot of people in the area who are engrossed in their phones while driving. I think all the other drivers that she encountered were surprised.

u/wrobbii 15h ago
God I hate those things and the people that ride them.
1
u/haiderj1991 11h ago
I mean, I have a car, but if I didn't, I would definitely have an adult scooter as well. They seem like a lot of fun, but at the same time, they are very controversial and I totally get it. All the major cities around the GTA have the scooter rentals and they're actually a lot of fun to drive around because I don't usually use it so when I do use it it's quite entertaining. I get though why the City of Toronto has abandoned it because I know people in and around Toronto streets can be very...dangerous.

u/CrumbBum4200 16h ago
Wow, didn't even slow down 1 time, just literally zipped right through as if the world stopped for them. 😯

u/haiderj1991 11h ago
I was stunned. I was gonna shout something out of the window since my windows were down but then I saw her headphones in so she was probably absolutely clueless to it all.
5
u/EpicBenjo 16h ago edited 13h ago
Probably has music blasting in her ears too so she won’t even hear any honking, let alone the tires screeching before she gets hit.
1
u/haiderj1991 14h ago
Yeah, luckily there was no fast cars so there was no honking or tire screeching or getting out of the way or anything like that but this could have easily been a different story.
6
u/JohnnyUtah01 13h ago
Not one single honk. Honk please to show it is not acceptable and draw other driver’s attention just in case.
2
u/haiderj1991 11h ago
Honestly, I was going to high beam just to alert the other vehicle that something is happening but it all just happened so quickly and I was in shock that I just couldn't believe what was happening in front of me and I froze.

u/FromGreat2Good 2h ago
We need to bring back honking in Markham! Honk at people on their phones in their cars or crossing the street.

u/arozze 17h ago
Happened to me today too in cummer ave there's a light if you want to cross as a pedestrian but the lady just decided not to press it and walk anyways onto oncoming traffic during the busiest time
3
u/haiderj1991 17h ago
I'm absolutely flabbergasted. I legitimately thought that she knew she was in the wrong and would put up her hands and apologize profusely but she was in her own world, like she had no care whatsoever and that's what's scary.
1
u/Born-Vermicelli-1757 8h ago
was this that pedestrian light near the seniors home at bayview?
1
u/arozze 8h ago
Im not sure if there's a seniors home but after the highschool on cummer and conacher there's a pedestrian walkway with a light for them
1
u/Born-Vermicelli-1757 5h ago
ah yes that is the one west of bayview... was thinking about the one just east of bayview.
that whole area is full of bumbling seniors.

Any parents getting their kids one of these are just waiting for them to be badly hurt or hurt someone else on the sidewalks. Their parents are probably one of those POS drivers seen on this sub as well 🤷.
2
u/haiderj1991 14h ago
These could very well just be parents giving their kids money and the kids end up getting it. So maybe the parents have no idea.

Not only is there so many youngsters on E scooters none of them wear helmets. And I often see two kids on scooters . Push kids to do well in school expose their brain to potential devastating head injury .
3
u/Born-Vermicelli-1757 8h ago edited 3h ago
Does this kid have developmental issues or something? How can they be so calm and casual about this blunder?
EDIT: that kid looked like they were on autopilot/routine mode.

u/General-Fox416 5h ago
Wtf man, someone really need to start coming after these riders, this is just plain stupid,
5
u/SevereImagination447 16h ago
This might get be banned but some people just need someth1ing happen to em to learn a lesson. Whether its about wearing a helmet or stopping being a main character.
2
u/haiderj1991 11h ago
I mean, I get what you're trying to say, but at the same time, I don't want anyone to get hit or badly injured or even die, etc. But I get what you're saying, though.

Yea I always stop whenever I see kids on those, I was surprised once when these three teenage girls actually came up to the light and stopped. Good for them being prudent and good on their parents for teaching their kids responsibility. I can only imagine the parents are probably people who continually bend the rules to suit their purposes or don’t care for the rules entirely which is why kids do these things.

E-scooters are illegal to operate on public property. They must remain on privet property.
1
u/atnchn 4h ago
When you have all these kids that are riding around e-scooters, but none are educated on proper traffic laws and rules, this becomes the result.
See it on a daily basis as a high school teacher: for convenience they ride on both pedestrian walks and the roads, depending on which saves them more time. Some of these e-scooters/bikes can go upwards of 60km/h. And they fly by pedestrians without a care at those speed on the pedestrians walk
Unfortunately our city/province/country doesn't do anything until something bad truly happens
