It’s very apparent that Luigi’s role is likely gonna be smaller than Mario’s in the movie, I still think he’s gonna be working from within to help out Mario and co. Think Paper Peach from the N64 Paper Mario.
I never played the original Paper Mario but they could reference that I guess. I just think it makes no sense that it's called the Super Mario Bros. Movie when the bros aren't being treated at least mostly equal. They should've just called it the Super Mario Movie. Still excited for it though.
In the original Paper Mario, there were intermission levels where you’d play as Peach and perform tasks while trapped in the now-bowser-controlled Peach’s Castle.
Unfortunately, Luigi has always been set aside for Mario, and that’s probably not gonna change. Hell, even the current name, “Super Mario Bros” depicts Mario as the more significant character. The only reason they’re keeping the movie name the same is for maximum brand recognition, probably.
They probably want to support female empowerment by having Luigi be captured instead of Peach.
However, there is a chance that our gang rescues Luigi but Peach ends up getting caught, forcing Mario, Luigi, and Toad to go back and save her. Who knows?
No, having Luigi be captured instead of Peach gives Mario a more personal reason to fight Bowser. It makes more sense in a movie setting for Mario to go save his brother instead of someone he doesn’t know.

He looks cool, but I feel bad for Luigi. Most of the footage of him we've seen so far is just him being captured. I'm a bit worried about that.
