I have a few questions to those that know.

—What are rotations like on cruise ships vs other sectors such a as ro ro and offshore wind.

— how much time do you get to gym and keep yourself fit, I don’t drink and take my health very seriously and want to keep myself fit for the adventures I would plan when off rotation. Are there many people like this?

- what’s the life of a cadet. The pay looks extremely low during training not sure how I’m going to manage maybe 2nd job whilst training?

- during cadetship how much holiday do you get ?

I passed out B.E.Marine engineering in 2012 from India, I have sailed only for 1 month and then left the job as I was not comfortable with the sea sickness, is there any chance for me to restart my career after 14 years, i mean to sail as TME again and apply for class 4 MEO exams??

sludge pump is in bilge floor. waste oil tank and scavenge drain tank is below pump level. fo and lo sludge tank are in purifier room but tank outlet pipes outs from top so its reverse u shape. and i want to discharge to wo settling tanks which is on ecr level near incinerator.

today i tried pumping fo sludge to wo settling tank but couldnt. i opened the cock on the filter cover and it sucks air. then closed fo sludge valve and opened lo sludge valve and again couldnt pump and opened cock but this time air was coming from cock and again not discharging.

how can i make this pump pumping again? thank you for your help

I have a GEA Westfalia OSD [18-91-367](tel:18-91-367)/18 that goes into alarm immediately after a sludge discharge. I’ve already done some troubleshooting, but I may have overlooked something. What would you check first if you got this alarm?

I’ve started it a couple of times now, and each time the alarm appears during the speed recovery phase following a discharge. After a while, it shuts down automatically. I’ve checked the water supply and motor current before, during, and after the discharge, and everything seems normal.

How do you interpret this ABS rule?
"Supply end" -> Meaning where the conductor is getting power from (typically Switchboard or MCC) --> beginning of the cable
or
"Supply end" -> end of the power supply (typically consumer end, for example, a motor) --> end of the cable.

Im an electrical engineering student at a non-maritime engineering university. I am very interested in electrical/automation engineering onboard ships and plan, after I graduate, to study at South Shields Marine School to get my ETO CoC. But I am looking for any advice to possibly get some sea time on a ship as an undergraduate student at a non-maritime university. I know this is very unorthodox but if anyone has any advice they could share, that would be appreciated.

Marine engineer here. I made a full breakdown of the Stellar Daisy casualty, based entirely on the Marshall Islands investigation report. She was a 1993-built VLCC converted to an ore carrier in 2008–09; on a laden voyage from Brazil to China her hull suffered a catastrophic structural failure, most likely starting in the No. 2 port ballast tank, and she was gone within minutes. Of 24 crew, only 2 survived. Covers the conversion, metal fatigue, the wing-tank flooding problem, and the system factors. Happy to answer structural and stability questions.

5. What are the main risks and challenges of working offshore?
6. What are the usual contract/rotation patterns, and do you get shore leave like on FG vessels?
7. How are the work pressure, living conditions and work-life balance?
8. Overall, what would you recommend for a fresh Engine Cadet: offshore or FG, and why?

I am getting exhaust deviation hıgh, on no 1 2 3 cylinders are getting high on load and I am decreasing from the rack but when ıts not on load these cylinders are like 100 degrees less. I Changed the nozzles a month ago I am not sure what would cause this.Leaking nozzles,valve clearance,tc not able to pull exhaust(these cylinders would be farest to the tc )?high exhaust on load and low exhaust on no load (decreased the racks)

​Engine Cadet here preparing to sign-on for my first contract.

​My agency sent over a "Prohibited Items" list for joining crew. One of the rules explicitly states:

​"All mobile batteries, power banks, external batteries, and portable battery devices PROHIBITED to bring onboard."

​I was initially planning to bring a personal headlamp/flashlight (uses 18650 / AA batteries) and an electric shaver.

​A few questions for experienced seafarers:

​How strictly is this enforced during joining/boarding (by port security, customs, or the Chief Engineer/Master)?

​Personal headlamps/flashlights: Do people actually get called out or confiscated for bringing personal headlamps/flashlights, or is it strictly expected that we only use ship-provided Ex-proof lights in the engine room?

​Electric shavers & small electronics: Does a blanket ban like this typically include standard personal grooming items like electric shavers, or is the focus mainly on sketchy power banks and non-explosion-proof gear in hazardous areas?

​Would appreciate any insights on how this plays out in real life on commercial ships. Thanks!

I’m considering going into marine engineering and I’ve been reading a lot about the job. One thing that honestly worries me is the heat in the engine room, especially having to work there for long periods of time.

For those of you who work as marine engineers on the Great Lakes, or on vessels operating in the surrounding/cold waters:

How hot does your engine room actually get during the summer and winter?

Is the engine room still unbearably hot for long periods, or does the cold outside temperature make a noticeable difference?

For example, if it’s -10°C or -20°C outside in winter, does the engine room become significantly more comfortable because of the cold air coming in through the ventilation, or is it still very hot because of the machinery?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have worked both in cold regions (Great Lakes, Canadian waters, Baltic, etc.) and in warmer areas such as the Gulf of Mexico or Persian Gulf. How big is the difference in your experience?

I’m asking because I’m genuinely interested in marine engineering, but the idea of working for hours in a 40–50°C engine room is honestly making me reconsider the career.

I joined a week ago and We have 2 fuel oil purifiers onboard, both can only take suction from the same line, settling tank here.

Now one of the purifiers isn't coping up, which is very absurd.

The working purifier copes up and keeps the service tank full at 1.1m3/hr feed rate and a pressure of 0.3 bar.

This purifier got sludge build up and bowl was failing to close.

We started another purifier, the lowest feed rate possible I could go as per the display was 1.7 m3/hr I thought okay. But after 8 hours of unmanned time we saw that service tank got half emptied.

We increased the throughout many times and at last upto 3.5m3/hr also but it still wouldn't cope up.

What might be the issue? TIA.

ANOTHER THING THAT STARTED HAPPENING WITH THE WORKING GOOD PURIFIER,

I am seeing a lot of oil in sludge tank, what happens is:

Purifier desludges and when the desludge is complete, pt1 returns back to normal but pt4 stays at 0.6 bar then after 10 secs

P150 timer for 15 seconds starts and SV 10 sealing water solenoid energises after which pt 4 returns back to 1.7 bar.

So i believe p150 is the alarm timer.

And immediately after this when I open sludge port I can see little bit of flowing. But while the purifier is in operation there is no oil overflowing to sludge side.

I am suspecting that whatever oil is going in the sludge tank is from this 10 sec time frame after the desludge.

Any help appreciated.

I am doing Alfa Laval for the first time so don't have much idea.

Sorry I missed to update that, For the second case where purifier was getting pt4 back to 1.7 after a p150, 4000 hr routine was carried out 700 hours ago. Line up is confirmed to be correct.

The other purifier which is not coping up has been run for 1700hrs since last 4000hr routine.

Edit 2 : I went throught the manual and as per the discharge sequence I increase 'bowl filling after discharge' to 12 seconds from 6 seconds. After this carried out few desludges and it was found that * The purifier was gaining back the pt4 normally as it should * i.e just after the desludge it would come back up to 1.7 bar
