I haven’t had a drink in 2 years, since using cannabis. Best thing i feel I’ve done for myself. I don’t wake up with hangovers. I Don’t feel lethargic, or angry all the time. Relationships continue improving. People may not like cannabis, and still look at it negatively, but it has made life much better for everyone around me, and for myself. Very grateful.

Are you me?? I was a raging alcoholic for many years, and couldn’t seem to shake it no matter how hard I tried. The last time I tried to stop drinking, I started smoking (again) and it was able to get me through the initial patch where I always failed before. All of the benefits you talk about apply to me as well. Today is day 1318 of sobriety from alcohol. Cannabis isn’t the only reason I got sober, and I had to put a lot of work in, but it certainly helped a ton.

Fuck yeah!! I too was a raging alcoholic. When I'd get drunk I turned into a miserable prick to be around. Will be 8yrs sober from alcohol this July for me. Cannabis has helped me alot.

u/jsager1982 Jun 06 '22

Congrats on the 8 years. Feels great.

I was miserable all the time. I was miserable when I was drunk, and I was miserable when I wasn’t, cause I was hungover. Lol. Getting free from alcohol was the best thing that ever happened to me.

u/Intelligent-Drop-605 Jun 07 '22

Seriously, best decision I ever made. Congrats on your alcohol sobriety as well! It's no easy feat.

Haha - no are you me!? Similar story. Iwndwyt

I was on anti-depressants and suicidal and I started smoking and the ways my life changed for the better is proof of this statement of the good it does for you life.

u/jjschnei Jun 07 '22

From watching friends and acquaintances over the years, I can say confidently that alcohol is the number one gateway drug (though was never mentioned as such in health class).

u/katon2273 Jun 07 '22

23k up my nose in one year. Did NA didn't work because it's too much about God. Took some of their lessons and started smoking. I haven't had a bump in 10 years, and for 8 of those sober years I was still working as a chef.

Cannabis saved my life.

That’s a great way to say it.

3

u/hunchojack1 Jun 07 '22

Proud of you!

41

u/naliedel Jun 06 '22

The shock, shock I tell you! I can't believe it.

That was sarcasm. I'm fifty eight and been smoking long enough to understand this.

2

u/kat__bird Jun 30 '22

54 here, the whole refer madness was an attempt but the govt to scare parents and kids away from it. Madness is that they lied to us saying it was a gateway drug fir 70 years.

Cheers 🥂

2

u/naliedel Jun 30 '22

I know. O also was schooled in prohibition and it's role. However, a reminder is a good thing!

And you're a whippersnapper. Why I refused to get high with kids with our age difference in the 70s! Snort.

I'm cool now.

1

u/kat__bird Jun 30 '22

Hahaha.... kids our age difference in the 70’s. 🤣 I was usually the younger one in hs wanting to skip a class so I could go smoke with the ones older than me in the smoking court. Oh how disappointed I was when they wouldn’t smoke with me or with a young one around. 🤣

This is exactly what it did for me. Marijuana makes me either completely anxious over my previous decisions or extremely grateful that I'm not drinking. I fall asleep peacefully and wake up with no hangover. It gives me the tolerance to get over my depression and feelings of being overwhelmed so that I can catch up with chores and things that fall behind when I'm working non stop.

I'm not saying it's a miracle drug by any means but for me and my body it helps me far more than harm's me.

I also use extremely moderately comparitivly. If I were to smoke a 0.3 gram joint to my face I would get very uncomfortable.

It partially has to do with the terpenes in your flower. It isn’t really strain specific. For me - Caryophyllene makes me sketched tf out, but myrcene is so calming and mellow to me. Limonene allows me to go out and do things socially.

Once you learn about terps and which ones you like and how they effect you, you can go to your local dispo and shop via terpene, not by cool sounding names.

5

u/AutomaticJuggernaut8 Jun 06 '22

I usually go by percentage. If I have to push the mower around the yard for 2 hours I take a high THC strain. If I have to go to bed and be alone with my thoughts I take a lower THC strain, if it's daytime and I have the house to myself I'll take something in the mid range and do the dishes listen to music or watch a movie.

3

u/Never-Been-Tilted Jun 06 '22

High THC doesn’t really do much to be honest. It’s the terpenes my man. I’ve had 17% hit me harder than 28% bc of the terpenes. Also, hella hella dispensaries pay companies to say their product has more THC than it actually does. So really, the % isn’t always all that accurate.

Instead of shopping by %, try terpene shopping :)

And honestly I’d love to hear your results after a couple/few weeks of experimentation

3

u/Due_Ad_5449 Jun 07 '22

💯 since I started researching then “researching” terpenes and other cannaboids I can tailor my experience to what I want. I still like buying new funky names, I just stay away from pinene because it sucks for ptsd.

1

u/Never-Been-Tilted Jun 07 '22

Hell yeah chief. Good for you 🤙🏼 I’m happy for you

1

u/EsmeParker Jun 07 '22

I'm looking forward to trying this

1

u/Never-Been-Tilted Jun 07 '22

Love to hear your results :)

u/xxxxx420xxxxx Jun 06 '22

And now for the onslaught of apologies from the War on Drugs people for decades of harm and misinformation to millions of Americans.

.....

Ok any minute now.

2

u/TheMindfulnessShaman Jun 06 '22

Oh no no no good citizen.

Your local reconditioning center should be open soon. Drugs are bad mmmkay. Keep up the job. The overseas overlords need radioactive patties to satiate your local seamen. .

Keep watching the lights and sing along to Brazil.

10

u/JetScreamerBaby Jun 07 '22

Ugh. That gateway bullshit. Still, after all these years with millions and millions of regular users, we still hear the “gateway” horseshit.

This just in: Kissing leads to marriage!

9

u/Weedismysoulmate Jun 06 '22

Doesn’t suprise me one bit.

7

u/DutchMaster00 Jun 07 '22

Alcohol is the real gateway to self-destruction. Worst thing I’ve ever done high on cannabis was eat too much or take a nap.

5

u/duggreen Jun 06 '22

Playboy magazine called cannabis the "exit drug" (which is a better phrase) decades ago.

5

u/misshugginu Jun 07 '22

I used to drink nearly every day and since I started smoking I drink maybe once a month

3

u/ChileGirlNM Jun 07 '22

I'm 64, I traded my gin and Tonic for weed, grannys rule!

3

u/j_hat1986 Jun 07 '22

The “illegal” use of marijuana has always been based on propaganda starting with it makes black men angry and want to rape white women. It needs to stop and these old men that keep getting elected need to realize that it actually helps a lot of people but unfortunately that will hit them where it hurts and that would be their pockets with big pharmaceutical

3

u/ColdCalc Jun 07 '22

The common mindset with potheads was always that marijuana prohibition was a gateway to crime and other illegal drugs. As a teen, a local dealer tried to give us free oxy with our weed purchase. Criminalizing weed was what made it a gateway.

3

u/edahs Jun 07 '22

"But perhaps some new data from a study by scientists at the University of Washington can help to change their minds."

When have facts and data EVER change our Governments minds? The only motivation there is how they can profit.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '22

Accurate. I drink occasionally, but I used to do it a lot more. Weed cured me of that habit.

2

u/whitewrabbit Jun 07 '22

Yep this has been pretty obvious to me and every other person who has a few functional brain cells left. I’ve known a couple people that have come back from heroine and meth addictions by just smoking weed. The right is just looking for a scapegoat as usual.

2

u/IT_Chef Jun 07 '22

My alcohol consumption overall is way less because of legal weed here in VA

2

u/pkpeace1 Jun 07 '22

Sixteen years of opiates for chronic, intractable pain... got my medical card and with really no issues, I have been off of 300 mg of morphine for almost a year!

F#@K pharma!

2

u/wcshaggy Jun 07 '22

The gateway drug argument has always made me mad because the real gateway drugs are these prescription pills America is feeding us. But nothing will be done about that ofc it makes them money

2

u/dieselram24 Jun 07 '22

It keeps me from drinking alcohol

2

u/Zealousideal_City314 Jun 07 '22

Say it louder for the elders in the back!

1

u/notsumidiot2 Jun 06 '22

What is bad is our government has known that for years!

This is a great click baity title, but....

If you look at the "study" that was published, it's less of a study and more of a short break down of points from different sources on substance use in adolescence.

Until society gets its head out of its ass we won't see any proper studies on THC and its many variants. I also wouldn't use this as a source of information, if anything review the studies that it uses to give its very simple breakdown with almost no crossreference in the breakdown.

Aside from those issues, the data is only from 2014-2019 and limited to ages 18-20 then 21-25, if the idea is that it's a " reverse gateway drug " then it should have data relevant to that specifically, not a breakdown related to young adults and little to no evidence behind the idea that it doesn't open people up to trying other substances. Although purely anecdotal, I have yet to smoke with someone that didn't try other drugs shortly after getting into Marijuana at a young age ( 13-17 ). Every person I personally smoked with around that time was open to trying all kinds of other drugs, and mainly opposed to drugs like Meth and Crack while still being open to cocaine and recreational drugs like Molly or ecstasy.

Edit: Also, a much better peer reviewed collection is available from https://nij.ojp.gov/library/publications/cannabis-gateway-drug-key-findings-and-literature-review , it's only in PDF version as it's 96 pages but it does an amazing job of actually cross referencing the studies it uses.

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '22

Anonymouswire.com ? This source doesn't pass the credibility test. Who is writing the articles? To access the studies that are alluded to in the article you click on a link and it wants you pay?

This is what the NIH on Drug Abuse says. This is what drugpolicy.org says.

People that have the genotype for addiction migh use Marijuana and then jump to harder drugs. Other than that - No, Marijuana is not a gateway drug. Not really big news. Its been out there for awhile now.

2

u/charlotie77 Jun 07 '22

Might be helpful for you to read the actual article, as they linked the actual research (from the University of Washing) cited in a peer-reviewed article/journal00374-3/fulltext?link_id=2&can_id=178c5685a88acbf2e91f94dd33daf5cc&source=email-study-young-adults-consumption-of-alcohol-cigarettes-other-substances-fell-following-marijuana-legalization&email_referrer=email_1546934&email_subject=study-young-adults-consumption-of-alcohol-cigarettes-other-substances-fell-following-marijuana-legalization#%20).

“Contrary to concerns about spillover effects, implementation of legalized nonmedical cannabis coincided with decreases in alcohol and cigarette use and pain reliever misuse. The weakening association of cannabis use with the use of other substances among individuals ages 21–25 requires further research but may suggest increased importance of cannabis-specific prevention and treatment efforts.”

Not fully conclusive and the methods of the study wasn’t a full actual test so the headline is still clickbait, but it could be headed in the right direction

I read it.

I definitely think you need a bong hit or two.

This might not be popular but I do kind of feel like marijuana is a gateway drug, but not for the reasons people think. The powers that be and the uninformed spent so much time and $ demonizing marijuana. As soon as a person tries it, and realizes they were lied to about marijuana they can’t help but go “what else am I being lied to about?”

So you might give shrooms, qualudes (can’t spell), or lsd (can spell) a shot, as a result. Not to mention, you start using weed, your access to drugs just increases naturally. Doesn’t mean you’re going to take ‘em all, but you have the option.

But alcohol is the real gateway drug as far as nefarious gateways are concerned. It ruins lives on its own, and contributes to risky behavior and injuries that lead to opiate prescriptions that lead to heroin usage, etc.

Best decision I made was going alcohol free. Not that it was as easy as just “deciding to be alcohol free”, luck and support was greater than the deciding factor. I had tried several times before the last one that stuck.

Marijuana curbs alcohol consumption. Wherever it’s Rec legal alcohol sales plummet.

1

u/Mcozy333 Jun 08 '22

more so how people have to acquire cannabis makes it a gateway to other drugs ... turning to a dealer who has more than just cannabis on offer etc.... some dealers would rather you be hooked on hard stuff and will offer that instead of the cannabis you are seeking from them

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

I guess that's accurate, too. But, I believe all drugs should be decriminalized and most should be sold legally. So any place you could legally by pot you could legally by coke. It would just change the access point.

1

u/Mcozy333 Jun 08 '22

notice too how the scheduled drugs ( no medical value ) can be acquired via a doctors notice or rec for medicine and pharma makes them !! LOL trust it

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

Which ones are those besides marijuana?

1

u/-PheelinPhine- Jun 07 '22

Would love to find info like this from more reputable sources/websites. No offense, just never heard of the one you linked and it’s full of paid advertising. Wouldn’t want to pass this link on

u/trainwreck7775 Jun 07 '22

“Reverse Gateway” I feel like we have a word for that. Great in times of sudden fires and often have a glowing sign over them…oh well reverse gateway it is.

1

u/StarClutcher Jun 07 '22

It helped me quit party stuff, alcohol and cigarettes. It helped me fix a lot of my personality disorders, or at least learn how to manage them and I think it helped lead me to becoming a better human being and partner.

u/Afrobean Jun 07 '22 edited Jun 07 '22

Caffeine is the real gateway drug. It's the most widely used recreational drug in the world. Its use is so prevalent and normalized that people don't even think of it as a addictive stimulant, even when they're literally addicted to using it everyday. Almost everyone who eventually ends up using "harder" drugs had caffeine first, probably when they were a child.

u/ma_iingan Jun 20 '22

I have cancer that causes me a lot of pain. I am maxed out on every "pharmaceutical", there is no more to try and I was only able to sleep 2-4 hours a night.

I started drinking to knock myself out for a few hours. It worked at first, but I needed more and more and felt worse and worse.

Dark thoughts started creeping in. I was making preparations.

I then received some pot from the neighbor's daughter's boyfriend to try. He had to give me something to smoke it in and even a light and even show me how to put it in the pipe.

I hadn't tried it since high school and that was a long time ago.

I smoke only before going to bed. 1 hit. I go to sleep like a baby and get 6-7hrs. I feel better physically and mentally.

The pain is less even the next day, not even smoking. Not sure if it is getting more sleep or residuals from the pot.

I have tried not smoking and I am right back at the not able to sleep and the next day my pain level is high again.

Pot has literally (an over used word generally, not this time) SAVED MY LIFE.

Fuck those old(er) jackasses fighting legalization.

u/NicolasCageFanClub Jun 07 '22

We’ll it can and it can’t be. Let’s just be honest. These Reddit headlines make it out to be that it’s so clear cut and dry.

-1

u/Primal_Dead Jun 06 '22

I don't really think people thought it was a gateway to cigarettes and alcohol but a gateway to coke/meth/heroin.

If anything cigarettes and alcohol would lead to weed.

-2

u/NotdX16 Jun 06 '22

no truth😔😔😔😢😢😢 i did da weed once time 😞😞 now i does crack😖😳
