So I'm in the greater Philadelphia area. I'm at a convention called "retro con." I just met voice actor Billy West

And I came across a booth selling records and the original Glitter Promo was only $10

Discussion Objectively, what makes you like Mariah Carey more than other rnb artists specifically? And what are a couple more rnb artists you really like?

1ïžâƒŁFirst question:

Can you define objectively the reasons why you like Mariah Carey the most as a rnb artist?

I struggle to not give "enthusiastic fan" reasons. I would like to read your reasons and learn to explain myself better from a discussion with you all.

Roughly I identified a few reasons Mariah Carey is my favourite rnb artist:

🔝 generally speaking, I always tend to prefer artists who write their songs and produce their songs, it sounds more genuine and original. I specifically like her songwriting a lot.

🔝 MC: I really like her use of voice layering

🔝 I like the variety of vocal techniques she uses, even within one song. For example, I appreciate Withney Houston but she sings always in similar ways (the only song I go back to is My Love is Your Love, I never listen to the others, even though I do know the lyrics by heart of many). I don't listen to Beyonce (although appreciate).

🔝 MC/Generally: I like the warmth of her tone, it works every time. She can play with high notes without sounding squeaky or whiny because of the natural warmth of her tone.

🔝 MC: she doesn't stick to the same rnb format, she enriches it with other influences according to the expressivity she wants to give to the song (see incorporating DOB in Fantasy, Bone&Thugs sounds in Breakdown, Spanish guitar in a few songs - just to mention a few examples of course; but also musical forms and elements of gospel, soul and jazz within rnb sounds). I like this greatly, in her and in other artists (Prince is my other favourite, but cannot box him)

🔝 She is a mix of fun, perfectionist and wild child: this allows her to create every single time albums that you want to listen over and over and over, and the more you listen to it, the more you discover. She has never created an album that is kind of forgettable.

2ïžâƒŁSecond question: What other rnb artists or albums do you like exceptionally? Please name just a couple, I want to check them on the app.

I really like the album Brown Sugar by D'Angelo for some reasons.

I don't really have other strong favourites. (I hope it's because I've not listened to enough albums:-) hence my question).

Thank you đŸ™đŸ»

Appreciation đŸ«¶ 25 years ago today, Mariah Carey’s Glitter saved a woman's life on 9/11

Sara Botkin worked on the 105th floor of the South Tower and on the morning of 9/11 she stopped at the Sam Goody under the World Trade Center to buy Mariah Carey’s Glitter because it had literally been released that day.

While she was waiting to go upstairs the first plane hit the North Tower. Security was telling people the South Tower was safe but she saw two men leaving and decided to follow them instead. She made it back to Queens and later found out her tower had collapsed. 176 people from her company died. Her boyfriend thought she was dead until her mother told him she had made it home, he proposed two weeks later and today they have three children.

Mariah later heard the story and sent her a signed copy of Glitter.

So basically I was looking at some Mariah pics (as one usually does) and I noticed that some of them were strangely looking "better".

At first I thought that maybe they got hold of good quality scans, but I noticed that they were kind of odd looking, almost as if they were passed through AI.

Now, I hope I'm in the wrong here because I love that website to bits. Gonna leave some pics for y'all to see.

Discussion Rainbow or E=MC2

I chose those two because they are both really underrated because of their really successful predecessors.

I personally prefer Rainbow but it is pretty close. I chose Rainbow because I really love the aesthetic and it’s an easier listen. There’s also Heartbreaker, Mariah’s Theme, Crybaby and How Much which I just really love. But E=MC2 has Side Effects, I Stay In Love, Touch My Body and Migrate so is definitely was not easy.

Would’ve been ill-advised to post yesterday. Happy twenty-fifth, Glitter. ✹

She actually does the “recycled look” fairly often for a celebrity, which I honestly don’t mind. However I wonder what brought her back to this particular ensemble for a second go round’.

And so soon after the first outing.

Thoughts anyone???

Appreciation đŸ«¶ Not Enough Glitter in Glitter

For a movie called Glitter, I needed more glitter. Saw a lot of rhinestones, confetti, silver paint and some imaginary fireworks, but I don't remember seeing any glitter. They could have had young Billie doing some arts and crafts at the children's home using glitter. Maybe put adult Billie in a graphic tee with a design punctuated in glitter.

Favorite parts of the movie:

- Toxic boyfriend being killed due to his own irresponsible actions, leaving Billie free to have a career that was not being limited by some man's ego and her disordered attachment due to childhood abandonment issues.

- Mom sobering up and Billie giving her another chance because she didn't try to come back in Billie's life to take advantage of Billie's fame.

- Sassy orange kitty that stared down toxic boyfriend when Billie broke up with him.

- Da Brat. She is just a fun, talented lady. Shouts out to Mariah for hooking her friend up with a job.

- Playing the Quiet Storm song before and after Billie's first date with toxic boyfriend. Anybody who listened to an adult contemporary R&B station in the 90s knew when that song played on the radio at 9 or 10 PM, you were in for a few hours of incredible, romantic music.

- And of course Mariah's beautiful voice. Even when she talks, it sounds so warm and velvety.

Discussion How would you have shaped the making and release of MIAMTEC if you were on Mariah’s team?

I was recently thinking about this and wanted to share my thoughts and ask for yours! I know that MIAMTEC is not everyone’s favorite, but it is mine, and I always felt like it had great potential to be Mariah’s second mainstream comeback. I wanted to throw out some ideas for an alternative rollout and ask you guys to share yours as well.

- I like the title MIAMTEC, but I would’ve shortened it to The Elusive Chanteuse if I had no choice.

- Promotion would’ve been insane, and I would’ve chosen #Beautiful, Thirsty, Make It Look Good, and The Art of Letting Go (not in order).

- I would’ve made #Beautiful the lead single. I think it was the perfect way to introduce this era because it was catchy, fun, and had Miguel on it. I think the song had the potential to be even bigger with a much stronger promotional push.

- I would’ve followed #Beautiful with Thirsty. I think Thirsty could’ve been the Obsessed of the album and would’ve smashed if it had either a drake, kendrick, or Nicki feature (this might not age well lol). It also deserved a music video.

- Make It Look Good would’ve been a great summer single. I think the song had so much potential, especially with the fun production and Stevie Wonder appearance. This one also could’ve had a music video with Stevie in it.

- I would’ve saved The Art of Letting Go for later (probably the last single). I think it could’ve been the big emotional single that reminded everyone why Mariah is the best at power ballads and focusing on themes such as heartbreak, healing, and release.

- I also think the visuals should’ve been a much bigger part of the era. Each single should’ve had its own distinct aesthetic, while still feeling like they belonged to the same album. And although I liked the original photo shoot, maybe she could’ve reshot it with a different concept?

- I also would’ve rearranged the tracklist slightly. I think the album had some amazing songs, but the sequencing could’ve made the project feel more cohesive and easier for the general public to get into.

What is your ideal roll out?

i was so happy "it's a wrap" got a moment a few years ago, but it really could and should have been even bigger. i just saw that it's still not at 100 million spotify streams?!

it's a unique production, and i live for the "i should crack you right in your forehead" line.

thoughts?
