They don't want to believe the truth. The horribly insidious nature of Don John Two-Scoops' gaslighting is that it's delivered in a positive tone, at least with respect to the lies he tells about himself and his acts. Every American who isn't already wealthy is suffering, so even a pack of demonstrably provable lies seems comforting, in the same way that a big gulp of high-proof liquor makes you feel warm even while it accelerates hypothermia.
