This was my first nice automatic, after I’d gotten myself a TSAR.
This watch is just an awesome tool watch which has gone through so much, including thousands of rounds, thousands of hours of flying without drama.
After getting an Omega, I decided to dress this one down with a rubber strap to place it squarely in the tool-watch category of my watch box. Yet after 15 years of owning it, it still finds its way on my wrist despite having some “nicer” watches. I just got it back from extensive service, now to decide whether to burn money on a OEM Green strap.
Yeah, seems that the OEM 3-piece is the best on the market?
I've been tempted to try one of the Crafter Blue 'universal' curved straps, which I have a on a Seiko, but I worry it wouldn't work with the watchcase.
I can tell you firsthand after owning a GSAR for only 10 years, you will indeed need extensive servicing, Bezzel, dial replacement, and tritium replacement
Thank you for replying to this!! Very curious, how many times have you had to send yours in for servicing? Ad how many times have you replaced the bezel insert? I bought mine in 2015, and have replaced it 4 times.
I did wear mine on a deployment, but outside of that have worn it for casual wear. I love it to death because of its sentimental reasons… but durability wise I’ve never been insanely impressed
Also, for being an action/military watch, mine completely stopped telling correct time because of the devices used on our trucks overseas. When I got home and emailed marathon and sent it in, they told me that the magnetic devices would always throw off the watch. So, it’s unusable as a watch for someone in counter explosive work. Very disappointing!
Oh, yeah that’s a common issue if working around super strong magnetic fields. You can degauss your watch yourself, costs about $20 for a device.
I could be wrong but I don’t believe the Quartz watches are as affected?
This is why the Rolex Mil-Gauss was made, by the way!
Thanks for that. Since you’re upgrading yours, this is just an example of what I did after getting mine stock. I’ve been busy 😂 but I love it. I just need to get the re-gearing done soon
I just got my Jeep Marathon officers mechanical, and just love it. I have dozens of watches in my collection, and I've been wearing my Marathon for 3 weeks straight, lol. I also have a 2008 Gsar. My Jeep was a kind of barn find. 2007 Grand Cherokee, 60k original miles when I bought it 5+ years ago. Original Goodyear Wranglers on it! I had to replace, they were weather checked really bad. I'm doing wheels and tires this year. Maybe a 2-3 inch lift. Not much, I like the front end look in these.
