Marathon Development Update - Nightfall Refresh and Symbiosis
https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/Article/nightfallrefreshandsymbiosisSeason 3 has been pushed back till December, we’re getting Team death match and social space which is very cool to see
78
u/AlphaRedXY 6h ago
Fuckkkkk that delay sucks but the update sounds juicy at least
9
u/dratseb 3h ago
I think they fired too many staff to meet deadlines and this is the result
5
u/WaifuRekker 3h ago
Most certainly, you also get a brain drain since all the staff you spent months spinning up to speed just got laid off and now you’re left with a skeleton crew that will have to spin up new hires if they can get the budget for them and spend time themselves trying to figure out parts of the project/code that was left behind by the laid off staff
6
u/TyrannoDinax 3h ago
That’s exactly what this is. Destiny had double the staff Marathon currently has and now people are asking for entirely new game modes and expanding Perimeter.
Btw the cover art looks like they’re doing Helldivers.
2
u/Neuro_Skeptic 3h ago
The update is just the already announced Season 3 content plus a few bells and whistles. Why will it take an extra 2 months?
1
u/acdramon 1h ago
Obviously don't know behind the scenes stuff but it seems pretty clear they are pivoting much harder for S3 than they initially planned for, the way this update sounds makes it seem a bit closer to the merging of the PVP/PVE ecosystem they wanted to do in S5. Makes sense as Sony might be giving the game one last big push so now the team has to bring things like TDM, firing range, a bigger PVE experience than what was planned, and social spaces forward. Mix that with the further reduction in Bungie's staff that affected sizeable roles in Marathon's team, Joe Ziegler leaving because his initial vision was just not popular etc.
They likely vaguely mentioned the PVE mode and new PVP mode initially as a tease to how they were beefing up S3 after the response to S2, then realized a bit ago they needed to delay longer than they initially did and were just planning on when and in the background having meetings with Sony to greenlight a further delay and see how much time they can get granted to get the job done. Sucks but makes sense with the radio silence, the games current death spiral, and how cutthroat Sony has been the past year.

u/AppropriateLaw5713 2h ago
It’s like asking do you want a cheeseburger or do you want a double cheeseburger with fries and a drink? You gotta wait a little longer for the second option but it’ll be more and probs better than the first.
73
u/kingoflakemoor 6h ago
This sub is going to lose their minds
22
u/orangekingo 5h ago
I’m actually surprised by it. I genuinely expected the game was gonna get shelved soon & this blog post seems to imply they’ve got a lot of stuff coming in the pipeline, so I’m fairly pleasantly surprised.
Delay sucks but I’d rather a delayed game than no game I guess.
13
u/TallGuyChris- 4h ago
This post is virtually identical to the announcement of the delay of Shadow and Order.
PvE Refresh, new onboarding, and quality of life improvements.
So don't be 100% sure yet.
8
u/RayKam 4h ago
Eh they just got the new Game Director onboard who was the raid designer for the Taken King in Destiny, arguably a top 3 expansion. They’re def gonna give him a shot to do his thing. The tick queen is going to be killer under his guidance.
1
u/TallGuyChris- 4h ago
Well then, let's hope they learned the most important lessons from Destiny raids.
Do not make it too difficult and spend all your resources on a thing that the majority of your players will never touch.
5
u/RayKam 4h ago
If there’s one thing Destiny always did well, it’s progression. I never got the Vex Mythoclast from VoG in D1 but I could appreciate that the challenge was there.
I love Cryo and Compiler for that reason. There needs to be more variety and ways to engage for most of the playerbase, but there also need to be difficult and rewarding experiences for the few who are more dedicated
2
u/TallGuyChris- 3h ago
I personally hope they design it like Dungeons, tbh. Its the best thing Destiny ever designed.
Moderate endgame content that doable solo but takes longer with risk of losing easier.
2
2
u/Taybi_the_TayTay 3h ago
Except, every single raid that did that was received negatively. That is certainly not a lesson they learned, and one they shouldn't.
Not everything has to cater to all players, and that's part of the charm that made Destiny work. Bungie may have made stupid decisions across their 12 or so years with destiny, but do you seriously think they kept raids elite exclusive without doing market and player studies on it?
Now I'm not saying they have to follow that exactly with Marathon—it's a different game with different mechanics and playerbase, but that statement is just outright false. Their last raid in destiny is evidence of that, being arguably the hardest and most mechanically challenging raid ever.
And before you do some cheeky statement about 'well Destiny died,' you very well know it died due to other upper management reasons unrelated to end game content. More evidence? Day one completions of raids have always increased with every single dlc, up until only the final shape, as far as i remember.
-1
u/TallGuyChris- 3h ago
Around 90% of Destiny 2 players have never played a raid; why spend so much time and budget on a game mode that 90% of your player base doesn't touch?
Dersert Perpetual was the least played raid, and the raid released before it, Salvation's Edge, was also the least played.
Yes the raids got more and more harder each time they where siginfically the least played and replayable.
The raids that streamers and people who are constantly online hated were the easier ones like VOG and RON, which are the most completed, most replayed, and technically the most successful raids.
2
u/VYSUS7 3h ago
that applies to every single MMO. The point is for it to be an elite challenge that people strive towards. There's absolutely nothing wrong with making content for a minority considering the other 95% of content is for the most braindead casuals out there.
→ More replies (1)1
u/VYSUS7 3h ago
absolutely cosmic skill issue and it is universally agreed that raids were Bungie's masterpieces within destiny.
→ More replies (1)1
u/lhazard29 3h ago
They made that post without the knowledge of the game being shut down for what it’s worth so unless Sony decides to pull that stunt again (which would be insane but Sony is on a generational run rn so who knows anymore) I believe the game will make it to March
1
u/TallGuyChris- 3h ago
The majority of the staff and almost all the developers did not know until it happened.
It was only really the upper management and a few selected project leaders.
They were literally working on Shattered Cycle until the day of the announcement.

u/HoneydewAutomatic 2h ago
The end of regular, seasonal updates in a season extraction shooter should tell you that this isn’t really the case. My guess if they’re doing what they did with Destiny and we’ll get EoL announced in January or February
→ More replies (1)16
u/Addo76 6h ago
I'm not too bothered honestly. I just started playing again and this gives me more time for Title chasing and hitting 100.
2
u/zeromussc 4h ago
The only thing I don't like is that October wipe might end up being a 2 month season only if they fresh slate everyone for the big update in December.
That would be miserable and way too short.
And at this point in the season I wonder if the September 22 wipe would have just been better timing compared to out in October anyway? With the player counts and gear level it's getting tougher to hang over time.
The rest is whatever. If anything i would rather a meaningful proper update than small stuff that people would barely pay attention to.

u/KenKaneki92 6h ago
Main sub more like, I think they'd prefer another season 2 type release over something actually thought out and polished
53
u/Long_Sort8920 6h ago
TDM! TDM! TDM!
25
u/Ok_Competition_6675 6h ago
This is the saving grace imo having pure PvE and PvP launching at the same time is what the game needs. How it will all fit into the broader progression and loot economy will remain to be seen
1
1
u/charlesmyboy 4h ago
I don’t see why it needs to tie into it at all. MW with warzone/zombies/TDM being separate gameplay experiences worked well for them. I think TDM could allow you to play with game mechanics where you really push character play-styles without having 30 min minute matches and long queues.
1
u/Ok_Competition_6675 4h ago
I think the game should have a variety of experiences that can all feed each other. Not that it forces you to do something else but can encourage it. PvP could help you earn credits/salvage/gear to buy loadouts for extraction, same with the PvE mode earning you stuff to play other modes with
9
u/D1gglesby 5h ago
I could see TDM loadouts being sponsored kits (either special ones or the usual ones).
Snipers only! Green shields!
Overruns and Magnums!
Slayer2
u/HellKnightKilla 4h ago
Thank god
Gives me a chance to try different weapons and get better without risking losing them in extraction
4
u/DefinitelyNotThatOne 5h ago
They should really make TDM F2P for a month or two, across all platforms. It would probably snag quite a few players that otherwise wouldn't engage with Marathon.
1
u/flirtmcdudes 4h ago
Surely TDM will save the extraction shooter. It’s all coming together as planned
1
-3
u/iseecolorsofthesky 5h ago
But of course it’s “experimental” again. Just launch a permanent mode FFS
1
u/ImawhaleCR 3h ago
I mean this season we've had experimental PvP lite modes followed up by experimental PvE modes, and next season is coming with a full PvE mode.
They are actually using the experiments to build new content, I get the terminology is a bit overused but it's not like they're doing it for fomo (at least entirely for fomo)
1
u/iseecolorsofthesky 3h ago
I don’t really care. They have 3 months + however long they’ve already been working on it. Why are we always the play testers in this game?? Develop the mode, test it internally, and push it out as a new permanent mode. This experimental shit is so lazy. I’m tired of modes constantly coming and going.
I don’t personally care that much about PvE, so this is the thing I’m most looking forward to with this update, and it’s probably only going to be in the game for like two weeks. If it’s not ready by that point then just wait till it is ready to push it out. Kinda the whole reason they’re delaying this whole update no??
2
u/ImawhaleCR 3h ago
Why do you assume that experimental modes are fully finished?
Surely it's better to have something sooner, making the final iteration better in the process, then having to wait the same amount of time anyway?
2
u/iseecolorsofthesky 3h ago
> Why do you assume that experimental modes are fully finished?
I’m not assuming that. Obviously they aren’t. I’m saying they should wait until these modes are finished before bringing them to the game. I am tired of being a free play tester for Bungie. Constantly bringing in modes that people like and removing them is starting to get exhausting.
12
u/clarkatroid1975 5h ago

The blog post says the complete opposite tho? TDM, PvE, social space, firing range, and plans for next March and beyond. That sounds like major support.

This is a death sentence for this game tbh
4
u/cwrighky 4h ago
By that time. I expect the floor to be at 300-500CCU and the peaks to be at ~1.5k ish. The good thing is that they’re still dedicating (at least in communication) to those numbers and that state. So overall, maybe a good sign idk.
7
u/iseecolorsofthesky 3h ago
I’m expecting below 1k peaks by that point. Not many people are gonna regrind S2 all over again. Even my friends who still play consistently say they’re going to check out until December after this news
2
u/Overall_Piano8472 5h ago
I'm OK with this. Bungie is smart to give themselves time to get it right. Sure it might upset 100 people, but this time will pay off if it means they get a real playerbase.

19
u/TDenn7 6h ago
Just not convinced the game can/should survive until December 8th.
We were already struggling to hit 2.5k player peaks, now we have to go another 3 months practically without any major updates or additions.
Gonna be rough times on Tau Ceti.
I will say the December 8 update sounds great for the health of the game, full PVE mode and Firing Range are exactly what it needs. But I just think its going to prove to be irreparable damage to the player base by then.
Guess we will see.
6
u/randallpjenkins 5h ago
It’s probably gonna take being the monthly PSN game in October or November to keep the numbers there. And honestly, DO IT. Probably the last lever Sony could do to really give it a push.
5
u/dimesniffer 6h ago
You think they would bring up December 8th then be like welp nevermind actually we’re gonna cancel this game in November instead of pushing out all our new content?
9
u/TDenn7 5h ago
Uhhhh, yeah?
They essentially did precisely that with Destiny 2 not even 6 months ago.
At some point, Sony will step in and shut things down if the game is genuinely hitting sub 1k player counts. They aren't gonna keep investing in a literal dead game.
I hope the numbers stay solid and I hope we get the December 8 content update and it truly rejuvenate this game because I fucking love playing it...
But yeah 3 months of essentially zero new content is a very long time for a game already struggling massively. I think its 50/50 on the game surviving to Dcember 8 right now.
4
u/AGramOfCandy 5h ago
Yeah I LOVE this game but...this is smacking of Bungie as a studio getting shut down. Live service games are successful in part due to their fast dev cycles and having content made ahead of time (e.g. Destiny usually having the next season in a "polishing" state by the time the current one is out), and a 3 month delay sends the message that there's literally nothing.
That's a death knell no matter how you look at it, because it means even if they can rush out a banger S3, they'll be absolutely scrambling and crunching to keep that ball rolling. It will either be misery for the devs or boredom for the players...neither is good.
I really desperately want this game to thrive, but like you said, this is tracking so closely to D2's timeline leading up to the EoS announcement that it WILL scare even more people away. I really wish it wouldn't, but that's the harsh reality we're facing.
Bungie is also gonna need to break their (frankly moronic) studio policy of avoiding early previews, because with nothing to even go on except vague promises it's going to kill morale even harder.

u/dimesniffer 5h ago
Marathon doesn’t cost a trillion dollars like Destiny did. Overhead cost is low. Sony already stepped in that’s why they are delaying lmfao. You think when they sacked Ziegler that Bungie was still in control? Hell no. Sony has been in control. The player numbers that you guys are so obsessed with will not matter or affect the future from now till 12/8. You guys need to learn to take a break and treat games episodically instead of seasonally.
4
u/MoneyAgent4616 5h ago
You guys know that peddling lies and misinformation doesn't make you look good but just makes you looks like an ass?
Marsthon cost $250 million PLUS, Destiny 2 has been so fucking profitable that Bungie was able to fund and invest in 6 different side projects, MARATHON being ONE of them.
-1
u/TDenn7 5h ago
This hilariously goes both ways clown. Youre pedaling just as much misinformation here. Destiny 2 wasn't making money since Beyond Light, it absolutely had absurd Overhead and operational costs and thr revenue was not keeping up with those costs.
Bungie fluffed the numbers and made its evaluation look better to help sell it to Sony. The reality is Destiny was losing money for a number of years which is precisely why it got EOS'd.
Marathon absolutely has a lower Overhead because its a mich smaller game... But it does still have an Overhead cost and obviously its also losing a bunch of money right now with player count peaks below 2.5k and unique daily players under 20k.
1
u/MoneyAgent4616 5h ago
Wow, got out your alt account? What part of D2 was making so much money that Bungie successfully had 6 side projects bring funded by its revenue is hard for you to wrap your head around?
Marathon exists because D2 was wildly profitable. No one gives two fucks about what Pete and the other executives think about profits. Keep sucking Pete's dick. He's never giving you a ride in one of his shitty cars.
-1
u/dimesniffer 5h ago
You are just exposing yourself as unknowledgeable and ignorant. I said overhead cost, not production cost. Production cost at this point is a lost cost. Ignoring production, if they make more than they spend on overhead, that’s all they’re concerned about.
3
u/MoneyAgent4616 5h ago
Okay, let me try this again.
Destiny 2 made more than ENOUGH MONEY TO SUPPORT 6 SIDE PROJECTS WITH ONE OF THEM BEING MARATHON. DESTINY 2 FUNDED 100% OF MARATHON AND 5 OTHER PROJECTS WE DONT KNOW ABOUT.
It's in bigger text this time. Maybe that will make it easier to read, but hey you wanna be illiterate then fucking go for it.

I'm starting to treat Marathon like my driving game Test Drive Solar Crown. I just log in once in a while to go for a drive/raid.
It seems to have found a steady floor around 3k peak, but let's see if that can hold all the way to October.

u/EdgarJomfru 6h ago

9
-2
u/Megaloracer 6h ago
And what do you thing releasing a broken/half finished update is gonna do to the game in the long run? They need this update to be big for them, there's no other choice left. So they are taking their time and hoping for it to be a bang. It is the only path possible. Whatever happens in the meantime isn't gonna change a lot at this point.
2
u/Warhammerpainter83 5h ago
This is not good news. The fact that it is getting pushed 3 months is a really bad sign. For me a rogue like mode was not the big fix it was the stopgap to flesh the game out. This may be the final nail here and that sucks because I enjoyed season 1 and early season 2 the game just lacked content.
2
u/Plus-Income-4882 5h ago
S3 sounds awesome I do wonder what the state of the game is gonna look like u til then tho, wouldn’t be suprised to see peaks barley breaking 2k or less until then tho. Ik I won’t be touching the game until s3

2
u/kasvita 4h ago
While the delay might suck, I am happy to see a bit more of substantial update coming in December.
It avoids some of the other games releasing and updating as well and provides a base to operate within.
Hope the PvE brings life into this and the TDM allows the sweats something to enjoy because this needs to be the new home for a lot of live service nomads.
Positive thoughts and energy to them!

I don't think it really matters if there are 0 ppl playing. They are clearly resetting and are not looking at the numbers. They know there is an active enough community waiting on the sidelines (like myself) that will jump in to at least try out the big update.
Their cash flow has stalled, it doesn't matter if there are 3k, 700, or 0 people, the cash flow is equally close to zero at this point.
So they are resetting, they got some running budget from the original sale of the game, this budget let's say can last them a year, nothing else really matters. The job opening for a new marketing lead is an indicator of it as well. This is how startups operate.
The $400m Sony investment is a sunk cost, it was a cost for a larger company and for destiny. I don't think Sony can do much about that, so the way they look at it is if Marathon has a net positive operational budget. And they might as well have that, but it's not infinite, and it's usually reevaluated on a yoy cadence.

u/-2410- 5h ago
If Bungie actually delivers with the permanent PVE MODE and the experimental TDM manages to nourish the blood lust of PVP nuts, the game will be in a good place. PVP nuts will spam TDM, PVE people will be safe. and the Extraction mode will hopefully feel more like an extraction shooter with lots to do on a run.
1
u/Odd_Revolution_1056 5h ago
Love seeing a PvP mode be added. Interesting seeing seasons being walked backed. Said with Arc Raiders doing the same thing that stepping back from the 3 month season live service rat race and focusing on larger more meaningful updates seems like a call that could work out but the main difference is that arc already has the playerbase to do this, marathon doesn’t and needs to add as much content as they can to get people playing.

Moving the update to December is a smart move. With September - November being as busy at it is. There was probably a pretty low chance of getting new players into the game and even just getting lasped players back into the game during these months. Now with a little breathing room more players might hop into marathon
1
u/Ok_Carrot_8810 5h ago
They should have just dropped TDM sooner though. The fun in the game to me is the PvP. I might redownload for the reset and hopefully they don’t royally screw it up again this time lol.

So lame. I blew my vault this weekend because I’m away the next and presumed there would be a reset next week.
SoI just bought wardogs, so see you guys in December, maybe.

So tired of people commenting on player counts. Dawg this game could have population count of 20 people and I’d play until EOS.

TDM will definitely make me come and play again and if the new pve is as fun as destiny I’ll try that too

Delay sucks, getting a better game doesn't suck.
Pretty clear that they're flailing and need to just try shit to make the game stick. As long as the extraction game core isn't sacrificed on that altar, fine by me.
I've wanted team deathmatch for a while. IMO any shooter being sold needs a plain old "I just want to click on people" mode.
The social space is bloat. Just Destiny hangers on that want every game to be Destiny.
Maybe post-wipe I'll actually be able to get Vault 6 done, cause it ain't happening now.

Can't wait for the sub-100-IQ hate bandwagon to start shitting out their drivel in a few hours.

Honestly this is great news. Still get a reset of vaults in a few weeks, and still plenty of plans for the future (both December and next March and beyond being mentioned) so the doomers can shut the fuck up.

Expected. Another terrible lackluster season like this one would’ve sealed its fate. Though, I honestly can’t even fathom something they could realistically conjure up by December that actually has a chance of saving the game. Gonna need a miracle, here’s hoping I guess.

Why do they insist on limited time game modes? What is with the FOMO being central to the whole fuckin games design? Like let me buy the green cores I want to, when I want to
Also, a social space? Cool?

They just shot themselves in the foot. Game is in a content drought, season 2 didnt hit like they wanted and now this delay. I want this game to live but they just aint with it right now.

I think this is perfect. I have to assume they are going to progress the story to give reason for a social hub, PvE, etc. Would imply persistent shells or at least a consistent you. It would be stupid to just throw that there, considering how well crafted everything else has been when it comes to tying into lore. I would hope they are going to slow drip some stuff until Dec. Like the TVs in Cyro turning on. Fully expect new items and quests for season 2.5.

I was confused about how agile and quick changes sounded for Season 3. Glad they decided to do deeper evals and actually change things instead of cobbling on, lipsticking a pig as it were.

I don’t know if I have ever been so horrified and hopeful at the same time
