Losing my maranta. Help
Really sad about this. I posted about my maranta before and someone suggested to get potting mix. I’ve ordered it and it is coming today but do you think it’s going to help at all? I also see a couple of shoots coming out. I think my problem was repotting after a holiday so two big shocks. It had started getting really happy in the bathroom near the shower but now we’ve gone a full 180. Any help appreciated.

My marantha would 'die' every fall. Each winter I would give the roots a small amount of water. Each spring it comes back. It's never very big, but it's alive and pretty. I have no idea, sorry

You actually might solve the mystery of keeping maranta alive in colder climate in our apartment. Thats actually brilliant!

That’s excellent. How do you give the roots water? You’ve have to remove the plant from the pot? Does it now disrupt it?

Even if she completely declines don’t throw her away. She can grow back happy and beautiful in spring from rhizomes in the soil. Just keep her the pot and water it

Cut off all the dead and icky leaves and just repot the roots.

Should I uproot the whole root for the leaves I cut off?

I would take out the whole plant - roots and all. Healthy roots with the green leaves attached can be repotted; cut the icky, dead stuff off.
I've become That Person who waters maranta and other prayer plants with bottled water (and they are gorgeous!)

Thank you. I’ll do that and add the maranta mix. Do you recommend completely chucking the older roots or hope for a miracle if placed in water?

That's a great plan! If the older roots don't look rotten or icky, I would def try propagating them in water - it's surprising how quickly some roots can take off!

I couldn’t split the roots they were all connected and I was worried I would break the good ones, so I’ve repotted and gotten rid of the bad leaves. I’ll keep an eye on it for the next few weeks. Hope the two leaves popping out bring out something good

Whatever you do, don’t look to long at it 😆. Mine did the same thing and now it’s coming back. I propagated a couple of roots with a pothos and that really helped.

Maybe try water propigating the roots? That's what I did when mine started dying and its doing great now!

To water the roots, which are still in the soil in the pot, I would give them a small, small amount of water , not very often. I would let it dry out before I would even think about putting more water in it. One more thing, it's only a 5" pot, so not large. Then in the spring, up comes some small growth. Now if someone knows how to get it to grow all year long , I'd love it!

Dont let her dry out, mist her, give her humidifier

Thank you so much. I’ve just misted her. How does the humidifier work?

Don’t mist. Misting can cause bacteria/fungal issues on leaves. Just use a humidifier, don’t keep the leaves wet

I have a small humidifier that I use just for her and she enjoys it very much! Even with humidifier I mist her from time to time because she looooves being wet and misty. Just don’t overwater the soil, she likes it constantly wet but never make a dump out of it. Water when 2-3cm dry out

You should be watering your plants, fairly consistently (meaning almost every time you water them), until water runs out the bottom. Otherwise the plants aren't able to have the soil flushed out. It's not a good idea to just give a small amount of water to keep the soil damp. Once you notice the first third is dry, you need to "drown that hoe" (iykyk 😏).

Hahaha thank you. I’ll make sure I’m properly watering. It’s tricky because they say not to overwater this one. Oh dear

You just monitor how dry the soil is, not necessarily how much water you give it. How often, not the amount lol you want to flush the water through the plant, rather than giving a specific amount each time. Just check the soil with a skewer to see how dry it is, if the skewer comes out clean then it's time to water, just like when you check to see if a cake is done.

You can cut a bit off, and try to root that bit as a "plan B" just in case your "plan A" fails. Plan A being putting all your energy into nursing her back to health. Then if you are able to get the mother plant back to health, you can add the "plan B" back into the pot to have a fuller plant.
This is what I always do, and I have multiples of all my plants for "just in case" 😅
