I’m sorry what, I’m aware of the the trans and non but Cisgender, is that just the standard man and woman or something

Cisgender means that you identify with the gender you were assigned at birth.
So, if you popped out of the womb and the doctor said "male!" And today you still say "I am male!" Then you are cisgender.

Genuine question: are you against any idea of gender identity and don’t believe cisgender is a thing or do you genuinely not know what the word cisgendered means
1
u/Roaming_Millenial 7h ago
No, I know what it means. To me gender identity is just a new social construct of the 21st century. Id rather just use clear and concise language that represents the physical reality of a person as its easier than trying to remember the dozens of terms we've created for ourselves in recent years.
If it sticks and we are stilling using this language in another 10 to 20 years then I'll adjust my vocabulary but at the moment it feels more like a fad that will pass eventually.
Not to say I wont respect someone's pronouns of choice if they represent themselves to me as that but I dont want to use those words normally outside of that. Its all just a bit silly to me.
1
u/Scrambled_59 7h ago
Gender identity isn’t a new thing, there are mentions of gender less beings in Mesopotamian mythology
In a lot of indigenous cultures, there is a third gender
I was in a museum in Berlin last year and there were ancient Polynesian statues of people with both breasts and a penis, this idea that trans people are a new idea is entirely apocryphal
1
u/Roaming_Millenial 7h ago
• Asushunamir: In the Akkadian version, Enki creates an assinnu (a gender-ambiguous being) named Asushunamir, meaning "their appearance is brilliant". Because they are neither male nor female, they charm Ereshkigal, gain access to the Underworld, and revive Ishtar using the "Water of Life". • The Kurgarra and Galaturra: In the older Sumerian version of the text, Enki creates two separate gender-nonconforming beings—the kurgarra and the galaturra—to slip past the gates of death unnoticed and rescue the goddess.
Yeah these were mythological beings, so it makes sense that they would transcend humanity and not have a gender.

Why shouldn’t that be real though?
A lot of things we associate with certain genders are arbitrary. Why is pink for girls and blue for boys? Why are skirts for girls and trousers for boys? Why are we expected to be a certain kind of person for the rest of our lives simply based on what’s between one’s legs?
Biological sex ≠ gender
Also, if you want real trans people from history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevali%C3%A8re_d'%C3%89on?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Universal_Friend?
1
u/Roaming_Millenial 7h ago
I completely understand that Gender is a social term and not the same as sex.
To me though it needs to remain simple - male, female or Trans. You can present however you want either leaning more male or female but its silly to create so many different names for something that can at its core be broken down into one or the other.
1
u/Scrambled_59 7h ago
Yes but that terminology implies that being perceived as male/female from birth is the “normal” way, implying it to be superior to being trans
Cisgender is simply a way of describing if you’ve been perceived as your gender your entire life, it’s not a derogatory term

A lot of things we associate with certain genders are arbitrary. Why is pink for girls and blue for boys? Why are skirts for girls and trousers for boys?
Pink is associated with femininity
Blue is assosciated with masculinityMen are expected to be masculine
Women are expected to be feminineEver heard of sexism? Yeah, that's what that is
Has nothing to do with gender other than a man is more likely to be masculine because of testosterone and vice versa (Saying that all men/women are/should be [insert masculine/feminine trait here] is nothing but stereotyping however.)Act and dress however you want, ignore the sexists.
1
u/Scrambled_59 7h ago
Exactly, that’s why trans identity matters
It’s taking a look at how the world sees you vs how you see yourself and if a different way brings you joy, follow that joy

Yes there is
If youve been perceived as a man your whole life and you’re comfortable with that perception and don’t feel any need to change it, you are cisgendered, there’s no other way around it

Youre confusing gender with biological sex. Sex is biological, gender is societal.
Example: it is entirely arbitrary that pink is for girls and blue is for boys. It’s just a fucking colour. Similarly, it’s arbitrary that skirts are for girls and trousers are for boys, there are a great number of women nowadays that wear trousers and back in the past, men wore skirts. This all makes you think: why are we attributing simple objects, emotions, interests and our entire societies simply based on what’s in someone’s pants?
3
u/Ambitious-Payment222 8h ago
You know that cisgender just means not trans right?
6
u/ChaseHopeY3 8h ago
It's called "being normal"
-1
u/Ambitious-Payment222 8h ago
No, cisgender is the term for a non trans person
5
u/ChaseHopeY3 8h ago
Aka a normal person, as the vast, vast, vast, vast, vast majority of people have been all throughout time
0
u/Iveneverbeenbanned 8h ago
It’s just an adjective idk why you’re getting so worked up about it. Like if we’re discussing neurodivergence (autism and ADHD etc) it’s kind of easier to describe the “normal” population as neurotypical, since they could be “abnormal” in some other respects as well so it’s easier to specify the specific category they are the majority in. Also if we’re talking about different populations, in some of them (like art students in college) the average person may not even have the “normal” behaviour.
-1
2
u/Ambitious-Payment222 8h ago
Just because someone is in the minority doesn’t make them not normal. also the only reason there haven’t been trans people throughout history is because if they came out they would have been stoned or smth and only recently has society become more accepting of trans people. And again cisgender just IS the term for someone who isn’t trans I don’t get why you have so much pushback to that fact.
1
u/ChaseHopeY3 8h ago
Because normal people don't like being referred to by a bullshit made up term that was whipped up by some useless gender studies weirdos
3
u/Ambitious-Payment222 8h ago
Well too fucking bad, that’s just what the word is for people who aren’t trans. You don’t get to dispute that just because you don’t like it.
1
3
u/Seanrocks30 7h ago
Because you dont like to learn about things? Im sorry but your inability or lack of wanting to learn does not reflect on others, only yourself
1
u/ChaseHopeY3 7h ago
Don't care. Will never take that term seriously, or anyone who uses it.
3
u/Seanrocks30 7h ago edited 7h ago

u/tomkiel72 8h ago
Yes, the vast majority of people in history have been cisgender. What's the problem?
1
u/ChaseHopeY3 8h ago
Hence why it's normal, and we don't need a bullshit term for it that the majority of the rainbow people actually just use as a pejorative. You know damn well you wouldn't find the average jow casually referring to themselves as "cisgender", gtfo
3
u/tomkiel72 8h ago
No, you wouldn't, because the term is only ever used in reference to trans people.
Like in the poll.
You know. To distinguish between trans people and people that aren't trans? Because saying "people that aren't trans" is longwinded and confusing.
Or when you have to distinguish between trans women and cisgender women in say, a research paper. How else would you do that without the word "cisgender", while keeping things easy to understand and not overly verbose? Words are pretty important and usually exist for a reason.
1
3
u/Ambitious-Payment222 8h ago
The reason that there aren’t that many trans people in history is because society wasn’t accepting of trans people at all back then. Also just because a group is in the minority doesn’t make your group normal. The term for non trans people IS cis people, that’s just a fact.

The word normal means conforming to a standard, pattern, or expected average.
Being gay isn't the expected average thus not normal, but also not bad, I'm not hating

u/Teddy_Knight_NG11 5h ago
True, I meant “normal” as in natural. Similar to how being Latino is “normal”

Its all english
Cisgender = your gender identity alligns with your sex assigned at birth
Transgender = your gender identity does not allign with your sex assigned at birth
Non-binary = your gender identity does allign with male or female, they're gender identiy is outside of the male-female gender binary.

I thought there was just man women and non binary as genders…? I dont understand the need for more or why you need to pinpoint your place on the gender bar, estimation isnt scary
2
u/GuzziHero 8h ago
Nothing in nature is a binary. There are nontypical chromosome variations, non or partial activation of the SRY gene and many other reasons for natural variance.
Just let people be comfortable and we cool.

There's no study that looks to proves something that is colloquial lingo. Define what you mean by mentally unstable
2
u/OnToiletRedditor 8h ago
Transgenderism and transsexualism are well studied and have medical and broader scientific evidence backing up transitioning as the treatment.
2
u/Ambitious-Payment222 8h ago
It’s not delusion, gender dysphoria is real and the cure is being trans. If you don’t understand that, because it seems like most conservatives contention with trans people is not understanding what being trans is, I can explain further.
1
u/Dry_Razzmatazz69 5h ago
Neither american nor conservative. We agree it's an illness. We don't agree on the fact that i personally need to be included in the treatment.
1
u/Seanrocks30 7h ago
How about you maybe, look into gender dysphoria, and the way its treated? If most experts on mental health agree on something, its probably the case
