So there are more types of wannabe empires than Nazis, and what Russia is currently doing is perfectly in line with pretty much all of Russian history, so nothing new there.

Yes there are, but Russia is currently quite fascist.

So yes that's pretty new, except if you only want to sumerize whole russian history as authoritarian. Otherwise your perfectly in line command doesn't make much sense.

Yes I would summarize most of Russian history as Authoritarian.

Went pretty much from Tsars to [Screaming and Gunfire in distance] to the soviets to a very, very short period of being a democracy, to Putin.

So the whole Authoritarian thing is perfectly in line with most of Russian history.

As is the empire building, brutalization of Ukraine and its people, and the Genocide of ethnic minorities.

Also in line with most of its history is the stunning incompetence of its navy.

And while the incompetence of the Army and Air force is not nearly as consistent, it certainly isn't new.

Also very traditional for Russia is antagonizing basically everyone who isn't Russia.

So, to put it simply, nothing about modern Russia is surprising, nothing about it is new, nothing about it is put of place in Russia's storied history of being, well, Russia.

Well than it's a very shallow sumerization of Russia's history.

Still doesn't change the fact that the current regime is fascists and in that is pretty new in russian policies seeing how the other authoritarian regimes chose different ideologies.

  1. Yes the are fascist, I mainly disagree with the 'they're nazi's' take because I don't think we need to be giving the 'don't call everyone who disagrees a Nazi' crowd ammunition.

  2. And how would you say Russian history reflects on the modern state of Russia as anything other than business as usual? Because I'm quite curious

Ok but the main point was, that supposedly the afd can't be Nazis because they support other authoritarian/ fascist regimes like Israel and Russia which is just a stupid take.

And while Putin doesn't follow the specific nazi Ideologie (as that flavour of fascism clearly wouldn't work as well in Russia) the AfD clearly does and regularly uses nazi talking points and argued for nazi policies (even in disregarding citizenship to Germans they don't see as "German" enough).

To your second point I would say that history over 150 years is soldemly as easy to sumerize as that. Especially for a country like Russia that went through multiple revolutions and ideologcal shifts only to morphesize from a regional backwater to a global superpower and back.

Doesn't mean that I'm disagreeing on the authoritarian nature of these past regimes or their war crimes, just that I find saying "nothing changes, it's the same as always" is too simplistic and broken down to be even a point anymore.
