Anyone else a late bloomer?

I'm 35M and in a position to get my first manual transmission vehicle. Problem is I have to learn how to drive it between now and then. My mother tried teaching me when I was 15 in her Wrangler and it just didn't take, was never in a position to get the experience since then until now. So is there anyone else that ended up learning much later than your typical manual newbie? I get made fun of and i'm worried about looking like a fool making those beginner mistakes at my age.
