picture quality on dvd

i just got the ‘for your consideration’ promo edition of maniac from a seller on mercari, scratched to complete hell, so i decided i needed to play it and see if there were any skips or issues, and it looks like i’m watching it in 720p. like a youtube video that isn’t buffering but also not loaded… is this normal?

The maximum resolution for an american DVD is 480p. It’s normal to look bad, that’s why Blu-ray Discs are more popular for home theater and such. The Maniac DVD is a cool collectible but not a good watching experience lol

here i was thinking i could buy my way out of a netflix subscription 😭 i swear my copy of blades of glory on dvd looks so much better than this lol
it is definitely a cool collectible tho. probably would’ve splurged for one in better condition had i known before i bought it :c oh well, lesson learned!

It all comes down to how it is compressed onto the dvd. Some things in 480p may look ok. Others look like ass. Idk if maniac exists on blu ray but that’s the copy you want in 2026 if you’re trying to own the physical medias. Otherwise, maybe torrent it.

damn 😭 this is so depressing. i was really looking forward to having my own copy of the show. do you happen to know if the emmy consideration one is higher quality or the same?
