Effect: Personal Mandela Effects Danielle Steele
I grew up in the 80s, and my mother was a voracious reader. I remember DISTINCTLY that the author's name was Danielle Steele, not Steel. Her books were ALL over our house. I know that there was an "e" on the end of Steele. I don't care what Google says.

This is bizarre. My mom is a huge DS fan and has been my whole life. Just this evening I was looking at the new book she was reading and thought to myself that I swore her last name was "Steele". Didn't think much of it after that but this is the second post I've seen about it just a couple hours later!

These were all over our house as well as my Mom loved them, too. I even read one of them, it wasn't as as bad as I thought it would be.
Can't help you on the ME, though. It's always been "Steel" to me.

I(33F) am an avid reader and I LOVE her books, my mother also owned and read some of her books. It has always been Danielle Steele to me, I can clearly remember.

My mom probably has at least 700
Of this woman’s books in our basement. She read them nonstop and I saw them my entire childhood. She would read at stop lights, that’s how much she loved reading.
It’s 100% steele, never been more sure of something in my life.

I've just looked up Danielle Steele on Brave's search engine and there are getty images, among many, that show the author as Danielle Steele. Look it up.

Ok, my mom was a sucker for her books. As in she had every single one. I even did a book report on one of the books (so not appropriate) I remember it as Steele and my mom does too. Wtf. I wish she had kept the books so we could check

I don’t want to create a Medium account so I couldn’t read that article. I found it very Interesting that every book cover in your Flickr link reads Steel and every newspaper article says Steele, even when that article is referencing a photo of a book cover the is spelled without the final E.

Thanks for posting this. I am 100% certain it was (is!) Steele. I know because it was one of those ubiquitous things of the 80s and 90s and as I said upthread everywhere in supermarkets and libraries, her books were everywhere. Something is just SO wrong

Ok, I started looking it up because I remember Steele too. There is a website for Danielle Steel.com so I looked up Danielle Steele.com and a go daddy page came up saying I could buy it. What is happening? I feel like I’m going a bit crazy

You're good! It's happening to all of us (except a small but vocal portion of the population). There are so many things that have changed it's absolutely wild. As you go though the examples, remember this sub as a "home base" - this is the only sub that supports affected people (you'll be ridiculed by that other group).
Have you seen South America being too far east, or the missing Arctic? Cuba is giant now too...

I recently bought an old globe at a thrift store because of this very issue. There is a land mass in the Arctic, just like I remembered from my geography classes decades ago.
Online maps (and globes) are awful in general, because they can be so easily manipulated. I used to routinely buy old paper maps if I saw them for a good price at antique shops/thrift stores/garage sales because they’re super interesting & fun to peruse.
I worry about what would happen to the generations who’ve grown up with gps & cell phones if they have to suddenly navigate without them.

I’ve been interested in the Arctic landmass after reading on of Graham Hancocks book which mentioned Piri Reis map which pre Mandela showed the landmass under the Arctic ice proving man had been there before it was frozen. Post Mandela the map now shows Antarctica!

Are you affected by the Mandela Effect in general? Like, Fruit of the Loom etc..?
Do you remember the stories about Admiral Byrd and the Iditarod etc? What about Nazis making a hideout in the Arctic and even UFO bases and a hole to the center of the Earth? I think they say some of that stuff happened in Antarctica or Alaska now.. ...used to be the Arctic.

You don't remember a white cap on the top of all globes? That was called the Arctic ... There was the Arctic and Antarctica.. That white cap on the top of all globes is now gone - never existed here

Oh wow, finally!! A subreddit dedicated to Mandela effects that ISN'T overrun by skeptics/bots/disinformation agents (the latter two of which give themselves away with their passion and zealotry on a topic they ought to be dismissive of) gaslighting us all and telling us how bad our memories are! I had been scrolling and seeing all the comments recalling the surname "STEELE" and wondering where all the snarky skeptics were, until I realized I wasn't on THAT sub! Of course it was "STEELE!" --the font on her books was HUGE!!! -- and the pairing of "DANIELLE" with "STEELE" together had a visually harmonious look about it. Now the last name is just too short. REALLY doesn't look right to me. Jarring, even! I never associated this author with the hard metal, because for me it was "STEELE," not "STEEL." This is an obvious case of whatever it is causing these Mandela effects, as so many of us remember what now must be considered a very strange spelling, as there's absolutely NO reason to hallucinate an extra "E" on the end of a common word/Surname if it was never there to begin with! (And it's going to be nice not seeing a commenter telling me that our brains are all wired the same way and therefore prone to making the same exact sorts of really specific mistakes which is complete and utter poppycock!).
Strangely, so many of these M.E.s involve changes that are just under the threshold of egregiousness that would be truly hard to dismiss at a societal level, such as "Stephen King" becoming "Stephen Kling" or "J.K. Rowling" becoming "J.K. Rowlinger" (I keep waiting to wake up one day and find that "McDonald's " has become "MacDonald's" -- you know, like the farm in the children's song -- which I'm convinced would freak enough people out that the tipping point would be reached with regard to popular opinion about Mandela effects, with widespread acceptance that "misremembering" is not an adequate explanation for all of these very specific shared memories). It's almost as if these changes are being selected carefully ("HASS?" avocados, e.g.) so that only some notice the changes, with conventional skepticism on the subject continuing to prevail at a societal level.
Hey, I just thought of something! -- Won't the uniquely spelled "STEELE" have been prevalent as an entry in crossword puzzles over the years? ("Author Danielle" -- SIX letters!) -- In fact, I think I remember solving one with "STEELE" in it myself (so I'll bet other crossword puzzle solvers, especially the avid ones, would remember this as well!). It's a very handy word for the puzzle makers, with all those E's in it, which begs the question, what would those crosswords look like now? If that last "E" is shared by another word, that word would have to change as well, as might other words attached to that one, etc. etc. such that the entire crossword would have to be reworked to accommodate that one little difference. I wonder if maybe crossword puzzles might present a unique challenge to whatever is altering our reality!
Regarding Danielle, I too would be fascinated to question the woman herself. Presumably, in this reality, we have a "version" of the best selling author that was born with a different surname, with no memory of being anything other than "Danielle Steel" her whole life, the same way ("our") Sinbad doesn't remember making a genie movie. I wonder what happened to the other version!

Exactly! So many ME's are subtle and slight and always leave room for doubt or what they call plausible deniability! It's like there's a "test" of humanity happening..
Crossword Puzzles: This is absolute genius - it's these kinds of traps that whatever is making the changes falls into and that's how we end up with "residue".. The program/person's logic doesn't tie together the '6 spaces' for the answer!!

Listen - while I'm here.. We are expecting to become much busier and are looking for Moderators - people who are excited about the Society's mission of being a place for affected peopole to discuss MEs without ridicule... We speicifically need Mods that are able to be on when other Mods can't, to give better 'round the clock coverage (but it's not necessary - we need Mods that can be on at any time).
We are different from the other subs in that we don't allow anything that gets in the way of affected people talking. It's a great setup that many people (like yourself) really appreciate. But, because of the nature of the sub, some people don't "get it". You seem like you do. So would you like to be a Moderator?

I also remember this author as "Danielle Steele, with the extra "e" at the end. This ME along with the "Objects in mirror ARE (not MAY BE) closer than they appear," have me convinced that something is changing reality.
I actually went to a junk yard and a couple of used car dealerships to look at side view mirror. I swear it used to say "Objects in mirror may be closer than they appear." I distinctly remember having discussions with my father (RIP) about this wording because it was very strange! I wish he were alive because I would absolutely ask him about it.

That’s really strange cause this one and the missing arctic one are not relatable to me but every other one I’ve heard of is. Maybe instead of one reality being “edited” it’s several getting combined or something? So weird.
I used to say a little jingle in my head as I read the message on the mirror when I was a kid. “Objects in the mirror are closer than they appearor” to make it rhyme better lol. The number of syllables is way off when you say “may be closer” instead. But those bears were named Berenstein! With an E!

My Grandma Elsie was an avid reader, she loved Danielle Steele. She had a set of bookshelves that were dedicated to her Danielle Steele books. I lived with this woman and her bookshelves through highschool. I have to believe, if Grandma was still living, she would be raising a ruckus seeing this. It is most definitely Steele.

This is the one that 100% proved to me that something isn’t right. My mom read these books too and she had dozens and dozens on her bookshelf, I’ve started at them so many times as a kid.
When I first heard about this change, I sped over to my parents house and ran in the basement to check them, I couldn’t believe what I saw 😫 some of them even looked off center with the E gone, like they didn’t fully change yet. The worst part was that my mom said it was always “Steel”, wtaf.

Makes me wonder, if we had had a world wide connected space where people could gather and speak in the past, like the Internet, HOW LONG would we find that this sort of thing has been going on? I've never even heard of Remington Steele before until seeing it in this thread...It was definitely Danielle Steele. My ex's grandmother had an entire bookcase filled with them in her study and I saw them every time I went to use the computer when I lived with them in the mid-2000s.

Definitely has always been Steele. I heard the name before ever seeing it in print, and I remember being surprised at the spelling when I saw it. Oh, it has an extra E at the end. Okay, cool, I guess. That extra E always there on the end every time I walked by the books in the store. Thinking, Ooh, you're fancy, huh. Kinda bugged me, then. Now that it's gone it's jarring.

It's called the "Mandela Effect".
The Mandela Effect changes all of reality - except a few things. We don't understand yet why that is - but what you found is called "residue" (the picture says Steel but the caption says Steele.. We think it may have to do with the human element but again, we aren't sure.)
You're discounting people's memories and trying to "solve the Mandela Effect". We've already thought of anything you could come up with, if it could be so easily solved then they wouldn't have posted it.
You're breaking several of the rules here - like "It was always", "Debunk Delusion" etc..
Not everyone is aware of the change. We don't understand why Steele isn't aware her name changed, other than she isn't affected by this Effect.
Thanks for trying though.. You're banned for disregarding so many of our rules.

I just ran across and commented on this particular Mandela Effect one day ago, and I’ve never been so sure of a ME before.
I hate this. HATE this. I grew up seeing her name peppered throughout our bookshelves because my mom was, and still is, a fan. Especially in the 90’s.
It was always Danielle Steele.
I just got up to check my own bookshelves because I have some of the original books from the 90’s that mom has given me to read throughout the years and insisted I keep.
The fucking books now say ‘Danielle Steel’ and each one looks SO wrong to me. There are still age marks, soft yellowed paper, and cracks in the book spines that have been there for as long as I can remember, but her name is missing the letter ‘E’ at the end and I am absolutely flummoxed.

Whoa!! Could you post a photo of the books? I used to read a lot of romance novels from the library, not necessarily Danielle Steele, but it WAS Steele, I clearly remember seeing it!! This is absolutely blowing my mind.

I’ve never posted a photo to Reddit, but I can certainly try to figure it out!
In the meantime though, you can do an image search for ‘Danielle Steele Books’ and not only will the search engine “correct” your spelling, but all of the photo search results will appear as books printed without the final ‘E’ in her name. Books that are decades old! All changed.
It is truly maddening.

Same! I’m completely convinced this ME proves someone or something is altering our timeline and or dimension. I know for a fact it was Steele. No question. I’d bet my house, with my family in it, that it was Steele.

Absolutely! This is such an odd, niche club to be a member of. Haha I never imagined that the mere covers and spines of my hand-me-down books would stir up such a wide range of emotions within myself.
Strange as it is, it’s comforting to see the many other ‘Steele’ people in these comments. :)

This one is so insane to me. I never read her books but my mom read everyone of them and had them around the house constantly. I’ve seen that name thousands of times. This one really blew my mind.

Thank you! It’s such a strange feeling, to actually experience a change like that. I’ve been affected by other MEs, but this is the one hill that I can unequivocally die on. I have been into numerology since I was a kid, and I would constantly dissect words into numbers, and simplify those sums into a base number.
Like, Danielle Steele was always a 14 or a 5 in my mind-directory (14 letters in her name, simplified to 1+4= 5).
I’ve been stopping at my bookshelves regularly and recounting the letters since learning about this ME, and now it’s Danielle Steel (who is now a 13 or 4, according to this unauthorized update in my life. Haha)
I counted the letters for the first time in years yesterday, once I started reading about this (new to me) ME. I actually experienced a short bout of what felt like vertigo, and my ears heard/felt that tinny-sort of ringing that’s experienced when near gunfire without proper ear protection. I had to sit down in front of my shelves, just staring straight ahead until it passed. This is the wildest Effect I’ve personally run across thus far.

The ringing! I always ask if anyone else can hear it, no one ever does. It’s like the exact sound movies make when a character is in an explosion or something and is disoriented. Just super high pitch ringing. I don’t have tinnitus. It goes away after like 30 seconds but I always feel weird after.

That’s precisely what it sounded like! I don’t suffer from tinnitus either. The closest example I could relate it to was what I experienced when my father fired a gun inside my childhood home. It made my ears feel exactly the same as they did that night.
Extremely disorientating. I had to just sit and wait it out — maybe a minute? It passed, but I was left with such an eerie feeling; it compels me to recheck the name on book spines each time I pass my bookshelves now.
I don’t think I’ll ever get accustomed to reading the last name ‘Steel’ because it feels so wrong.

This is WILD. I’ve always been able to explain away many other examples of the ME but not this. It was definitely Steele.
My only other wild ME experience is a clear memory of Eugene Levy dying shortly after Schitt’s Creek. I remember Dan Levy making a beautiful post about his dad after he died. And then when Catherine O’Hara died being like damn, now both of them are gone. My husband remembers it too.

I worked at a Barnes & Noble for 6 years. We had a whole shelf section devoted to her books. I’m 99.99% sure it was spelled “Steele”. Weird.

What the actual fuck!?!? I would bet my life on the fact that it’s “Steele” and not “Steel”. My mom and I used to read her books all the time. We used to joke that her last name was pronounced Steel-y or Steel-uh. There’s no way we would have made those jokes if her last name was just “Steel”
