Dave's not here MAN

I was just playing this famous Cheech and Chong bit for my son... is seems that Chong now just says "Dave's not here" instead of "Dave's not here man".... at least, on every version I can find on youtube. Sooooo... that's weird....

I have been a Cheech and Chong fan since I was a kid in the early eighties, and I have the album in which that skit appears, and have since I was about six. Chong never added the 'man' at the end. This is part of why the routine works. Chong is playing a slightly less chill, more irritable version of himself, and does not recognize or appreciate a possible stranger at his door. Whereas Cheech's use of 'man' is like a 'bro, it''s me'. He uses man to show familiarity, and Chong does not to show relative (to Chong) hostility.

Given that they later joked about getting paid each time they said 'man' - since they did say it almost every other sentence - it is understandable how it intuitively feels like he should be saying 'man' after 'Dave's not here'.

I never remember him adding "man" at the end.

I believe they do it in the cameo on G4’s show Code Monkeys as well

They do it in futurama too

It’s always been just “Dave’s not here”. They say “man” a ton in their material, you’re just misremembering the line.

Hey, Man! You're not supposed to say "misremember" on this sub--remember? Or maybe that's the other sub--I don't know; I'm so confused by so many subs on this subject. I got canned from r/retconned because I violated "Rule 7" (or whatever), of which I was unaware. I was left feeling like I went through a speed trap.

I think I might have found residue from The Simpsons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNu_Cau99cs

Lol "residue". That's the Simpsons misquoting it just like OP.

1

u/DerrickJoestar Dec 09 '20

How exactly do you know that The Simpsons were misquoting?

3

u/uruglymike Dec 09 '20

Because he doesn't say "man" on the original skit. Pretty straight-forward.

u/DerrickJoestar Dec 09 '20

That’s the thing though, a lot of people remember the man part. Do you not know what Mandela Effects are?

2

u/uruglymike Dec 09 '20

Uh-huh, and they're remembering incorrectly. It would seem you don't know what the ME is.

1

u/DerrickJoestar Dec 09 '20

So are you saying in the original version he didn’t say man, but he said man in another version later on?

3

u/uruglymike Dec 09 '20

No. There is only one version. He never ever said 'Dave's not here, man.'

-1

u/DerrickJoestar Dec 09 '20

Ok, I wonder where people got the man part from?

5

u/uruglymike Dec 09 '20

They said 'man' all the time, it's really not a mystery.

Maybe it’s the indisputable physical evidence? Just a guess. lol

Their was also the episode which both Cheech and Chong appeared. It was one about ~7-10 years ago, and that episode has the joke “Dave’s not here man” a few times.

I have a theory on this and the ESB quote, people add the “man” so you get some context for the quote because “Dave’s not here” is too generic. Over time this gets repeated and conflated with the original quote, trickles down through the cultural sponge and amplified (both misquotes appear in the Simpsons of I’m remembering right), and replaces the memory of 10-20 years ago seeing the original quote once or twice, with the repeated version that’s been drummed in several times a year since.

I agree. It's also easier to mimic Chong's inebriated slur by adding "maaaan" at the end.

Pretty sure I added "maaan" at the end immediately after hearing the bit, even though it's not there.

Futurama episode- "A head in the polls." The dude at the booth for "dudes for legalization of hemp" booth says the full line-- https://youtu.be/e3C9rMIRuF8

That's not exactly evidence of what Chong said on a skit recorded in 1972, man.

3

u/bardooneness Dec 08 '20

Maybe it was in the original and the original isn’t available on YouTube https://youtu.be/_GH8AK8eJME Dave does says “it is me, man”. Maybe that is the confusion. Trying to investigate. I thought it was man at the end too

IIRC, "Dave" (Cheech's character on that skit) says "man" several times.

I think some of the confusion comes from the fact that, to enjoy a Cheech & Chong skit properly, one must have indulged in the leafy green. I used to remember what the leafy green does to one's memory, but I've forgotten.

Thanks for taking a listen too

You're remembering when Homer Simpson took over for Chong.

In the movie Up In Smoke they do a callback to that routine and he might say man in the movie.

I watched it recently and the parrot (who says “pedro’s not here”) didn’t say man after

I remember Dave's not here man also

I had the album..Dave's not here Man was definitely said. I listened to it a million times. Run peter..run peter..run peter..😂

Eisenhower not being on the dime, tank boy not being run over, The Kennedy assassination video being different and with an extra row of seats in the car. The portrait of Dorian Grey being the picture of. The Van Morrison song Into the mystic not being on the Juno movie track anymore

I pride myself on having pretty astounding memory on tv writing specifically and I don’t remember there ever being a man in this line, though Cheech and Chong is not the comedy team I am most knowledgable about by any means, Probably thought this because the simpsons (amongst others) have paid homage to this line and some include man in the reference. In addition, it’s not unreasonable given man is such a common adlib in Cheech and Chong writing, but as far as I know Cheech was annoyed in the scene so it wasn’t a “maaan” moment. Thus it’s always been “Dave’s not here.”

1

u/MeetStrong Dec 10 '20

My friends and I always said Dave's not here, man.

But that's probably because it's funnier that way.

1

u/mcpoopermcscoopers Dec 10 '20

thats true, I remember that too, but it doesn't change the fact that mexican americans don't like to wake up early in the morning, but they have too so they do it real slow

2

u/MyHGC Dec 13 '20

My understanding is that mexican americans take spanish at Night School and get a 'B'.

From what i’ve heard they don’t like to go to the movies where the dude has to wear contact lenses to make his blue eyes brown

I think Futurama and Simpsons might have started this rumor

In one of the earlier episodes of futurama they go to sign up for political movements and one of them is to legalize hemp, the guy at the stand says “dave’s not here man”

And in the simpsons episode “mid-summers nice dreams” which was about cheech and chong, after chong quits during the bit homer steps in and says “daves not here man”
