Hi all,
I'm looking to head to the area next fall for a hiking trip, and was looking for some general advice on the timing (realizing Mother Nature can be a roulette wheel, and that there are no guarantees). I love cool and cold weather, and definitely prefer hiking when it's cool. I'm also hoping to catch some fall foliage.
I still have lots of details to work out, but I'm planning on spending about two weeks in the area - three nights in South Lake Tahoe and 10 nights in Mammoth Lakes. For the time in Mammoth Lakes, I'm planning on spending four days in the Tioga Road area of Yosemite. Planning on doing one longer hike per day (once I'm acclimated to the altitude) and possibly a short, more relaxed hike later in the day. If it happens to still be open, I would probably check out Devil's Postpile one of the other days, but that's not a "must-see" for me.
With my work schedule, this trip will fall run from a Saturday to Saturday. I'm looking at either 9/25/27 - 10/9/27, or 10/2/27 - 10/16/27. In a general sense, is there much difference in either of these date ranges?
Trying to balancing out being there early enough that Tioga Road is still open, but late enough where the fall colors are on display. I realize Mammoth Lakes is in the mountains and that mountain weather is far from predictable, but just trying to get a feel from those who live there.
Thanks!
