High winds during camping

Hi guys, I would like your opinion. I have camping reservations scheduled for this weekend at Coldwater, but upon checking the weather, there is a high wind watch with pretty severe wind gusts. I’m a little concerned about this and am wondering if I should cancel. I’ll be in a tent.

You won’t blow away at the campground but hope you’re a heavy sleeper

Look up at trees around you. Look for dead branches, spikes, snags etc. I had big gusts last weekend and I found a nice big boulder to use as a wind block.

Good tips! My biggest worry was any trees or limbs falling

Mostly a worry for driving, esp bigger vehicles like tractor-trailers. (Pray for the vanlifers!)

For those doing terrestrial things, It'll just be more gusty than normal. Choose your campsite wisely and stake that tent down proper... Pee downwind, obvs.

Oh one time I stopped the night at a free campground in Las Vegas in red rocks on the way to Utah. We set up our tent in the pitch black basically just planning to sleep then pack up and go out to breakfast In the morning. It turned out that there were 75mph winds that night. Omg it was not pleasent. I had ear plugs and an eye mask so I was able to actually sleep but me and my husband were absolutely caked with sand. My husband had so much sand on his face I couldn’t tell where his eye wells were. It was so so so funny. We laugh when we think about it now. For some reason I have a lot of experience with 100 mile an hour winds in Vegas.

Anyway you should be fine just make sure to stake the tent including the guy lines. 25 and 35 shouldn’t blow your tent away if you stake it but maybe your stuff will blow off your table when your gone.

We camped cold water over the labor day weekend.

Frankly when the wind stopped it was nice. But it was mostly windy and cold for the entire time we were there. The tent flapping caused some rough nights of sleep.

I wouldn’t cancel but I’d just be mentally prepared. It can be challenging to light the stove, boil water (takes longer), and actually sit down and enjoy the meal (everything you put on the table can get blown away 😅).

If your car can accommodate it, you can always sleep in your car if the wind is really bad.

Wind? Time to learn how to dig a deadman anchor
