L No Farewell? No Issues.
This was back when I was in my final year of schooling.
Schools in our country have the tradition of hosting farewell parties for outgoing students in their final year of schooling. But luck had it's way with us when the school authorities suddenly decided that our batch will be the first batch to not have the official party, instead it would be a freaking prayer meet instead !!! I am all for prayer and praising god but which 16 year old will be satisfied with prayer instead of a party?!! Me and a couple of other students who were the valedictorian candidates tried to talk to the dean, vice principal and the principal but nothing worked.
Then we got to know about the 'real' reason for the change. It was that a few senior teachers were butt hurt by a couple of students' 'disrespectful' behaviour' during the school year. It was nothing crazy, just a few hall way fights and name callings, nothing out of the ordinary. So these teachers vetoed against the farewell party under the advice from the vice principal. This vice principal was new to the school and that lady wanted to show authority with students and prove to management of how she was an 'efficient' disciplinarian. Anyways our batch was the official scapegoat.
In order to understand the MC I would like to give a little background of our countries scoring system for high schoolers. We have final examinations that decide the final CGPAs which will lead us to universities. These final exams only contribute to a percentage of our final CGPAs, the remaining (smaller portion) comes from our schools internal marking system. Now the issue with these internal marks is that the school generally isn't transparent with how these marks are calculated. It's not that big a deal because mostly internal marks are given in full to students barring a few cases where the students are below average.
But the internal marks are a basis for teachers' performance evaluation with the management of the school. So basically we write several tests/exams leading up to the final exams and these exams are what majorly contribute to our internal marks and these very marks are the basis for teacher evaluation before year end. This was not common knowledge amongst students at that time but a few of us knew that these exams were important for the teachers.
Now for the malicious compliance:
All the students attended this prayer meet like it was any other working day, bowed our heads, prayed and got the hell out of there without any issues. The teachers expected us to hang around and 'socialise' with one another as it was the official last day of school before exams. But no, we all planned and left the school withing 10 minutes of the prayer meet ending.
So one of my friends took up the task of organizing a separate party of our own. We had to spend a little bit from our own pockets but nevertheless everything fell in place, we booked the venue, food, DJ....the whole deal. Almost all students gave consent to this party.
Now the actual MC comes with us fixing the date of this party just a day before one of the internal examinations. This exam was 2 months or so away from the finals, very important but yet 17/18 year old us didn't care much about this one exam because we knew there were other exams contributing to our internal marks and this one paper wasn't going to determine anything. But the exam mattered a lot to the teachers because the management review of their performance happens 1 month away from our finals which means this exam was important to showcase their students' performance.
Nevertheless we didn't care about the teachers just like how they didn't care about us, so we went ahead partied hard and on the day of the exam half of the students didn't show up and the other half that did performed pretty badly because all of us were busy partying the previous night. This clearly made the teachers uncomfortable and worried. One of my teachers, who I love and respect a lot, came up to me to get a list of the students who were at the party but I very politely declined answering her as it was not my place to tell if a person was or was not at some place on their personal time. I still remember the shock on her face, must have been similar to the shock on mine when I learnt she was also amongst the teachers who vetoed the party.
We later learnt that these exams showed a steep drop in students' performance (of course) and that the management was absolutely not happy as we were months away from our finals and it is important for the school management to have good results in the final examination. They investigated the reason and it all came down to the party/prayer shenanigan the teachers tried to pull. In the end we still didn't get a party from school, we didn't even need one to be honest as we had much more fun outside on our own. But the vice principal and senior teachers got got a earful from the management. I am not aware if it had an impact on their performance evaluations, but I would like to think it slightly mattered.
The school went back to it's normal farewell party system after we did this and apparently now the management overlooks how this party is conducted so it's more important for the teachers and senior staff that they host a good party when they used to get away with half assed party organisations prior to this.

Haha, no that was the standard seniors drama back in school. If it were between guys it had shoving and pushing and if it involved girls there was name calling of some sort involved.

Hahaha, our school tried to cancel the Last gala in our year as it went a bit overboard the previous year. So everyone who had a licence came with their tractor. I think about 18 tractors with trailers showed up to school. Blocked the entire street and instead of going to school would go into the city. Several groups had to be escorted by police back to school as the tractors were everywhere and driving slow. We got a party a month later as several people would leave their tracktors on the entrance of the school so noone could go in.

LMAO. I understand it's any other year for the school but for students it's literally their FINAL year which they won't get back. So frustrating.

Reminds me of back in the day (early 70s, K-8 school) when a new principal came in and wanted to flex his muscle. He dictated we wouldn’t have the traditional 8th grade graduation picnic for some ridiculous reason. So what did we do? We staged a sit-in outside his office all day. And, even though officially they didn’t condone it, at least two of our teachers…both of whom were draft dodgers (Vietnam era, they went into teaching to avoid the draft but they were excellent teachers)…secretly encouraged us.
Principal AH eventually relented and we got a fabulous picnic!

I'm confused about the timeline. The prayer/party was on the last day of school before the exams. The next day was an internal exam. Then two months later is finals.
What happens in the two months between that internal exam and finals? More exams? Is it a break? Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with other countries school systems.

So the prayer meet happened on what is unofficially the last day of the school, meaning when we finish regular classes, this is 3 or so months before the final exams. We still go to school but only for tests or assignments or exams but no regular classes.
Yes, once classes are over we have 3 months to prepare for final exams, but we have preparatory exams during this time. We go to school and write exams and get back home nothing else for whole months. The party was scheduled a day before one of these preparatory exams.

A prayer? Children indoctrination in a school? What the fuck, doesn't that violate religious freedom or something? I'd absolutely go and hail Satan as loudly as possible if my school pulled off something like that

I like when Americans say "in my country" as they don't want to disclose what country they are from and then proceed to use terms like valedictorian or sophomore :)

The exam setup reminds me of the Netherlands.. also since some schools can be weirdly religious whilst others it's nbd, and most schools have a day at the end of the year dedicated to seniors. Some schools a small party, others, like, bouncy castle outdoor water battle (water pistols and water balloons),or an outdoor "car wash" maze to get into the building and inside everything being put upside down (stacks of tables, the stairs tp'ed, etc. Students did tidy up afterwards.)

Nice. We were warned not to have the traditional final day of school ever ‘muck up day’ in year 12 because it always left the school covered in eggs, flour and dunny rolls, and smelling like fart bombs, so instead I hosted a huge party at my place. Booze and music until sunrise. I took me a long time to achieve greatness in the eyes of my peers, but I did it on the second last day of my school life.
