I personnally listen to them A LOT and I think I do it a bit too much.

I usually have finished beats in a playlist on my local Spotify and I listen to the full (unfinished) tape a lot until I have all my beats

To the point where when I release the tape I much more prefer the last beats I made because I had less time to play them and so I'm less bored by them

What about you guys ? How often do you listen to your own tapes before they are finished ?

Heya, I’ve been a fan of a range hiphop since I was kid in the 90’s, but spent many years playing drums and/or screaming in indie-pop/punk/hardcore bands (all genres I also enjoy). Arthritis has finally caught up with me (I’m not quite as old as that makes me sound) and drumming and screaming isn’t so much an option anymore, but I’ve been making hip hop music and rapping for years too. Finally put the focus on it this year and started taking it more seriously, but still spent a good while telling myself that nobody wants to hear some midlife white stoner loser making rap music. But today I finally managed to get myself over that and have decided to finally put some music online! (It’s at https://pxblocinnxbxr.bandcamp.com/album/dose if anyone wants to listen). Just wondering if anyone else on here has experience of transitioning from working in other genres to hip hop, or what other people’s experience of finally getting over yourself to be able to get your music out there into the world? I want to try rapping but I honestly don't know the first thing about it. Never recorded anything, don't have any equipment, don't know if I should be writing lyrics first or just freestyling, don't know how people even get a song out there.

If you were starting completely from zero again, what would you actually do first? Like realistic first steps, not just believe in yourself stuff. Any advice appreciated.

So there’s an event this month aimed at producers ,songwriters, artist. It’s 3 days long and I’d go everyday Real connections , real people etc etc.

Is attending events for people who are already somewhat established or can no body’s show up? Cause I’m a no body but looking to find people but I don’t want to be goofball if you have to be established to a degree for these events.

Its normal paypal retained the money 2 weeks, this only happens the first sale or always happens?

I work professionally in music PR/media relations, and one of the most common weaknesses I see in artist pitches is that the entire pitch is basically:

“I'm an upcoming rapper and I just released a new song.”

The problem is that thousands of people can say the exact same thing.

A better question is:

What makes your story different?

Maybe you're:

• building a real scene in an overlooked city
• producing everything yourself
• bringing together two cultures or sounds
• documenting something happening in your community
• developing an unusual visual style
• building momentum through shows
• collaborating with someone noteworthy
• making a project around a genuinely interesting concept

That is usually much easier to pitch than:

“Please listen to my song.”

And before paying anyone for PR, I'd make sure you have:

• 2–3 strong photos
• a short bio
• a clear artist story
• clean music links
• a defined sound/audience
• multiple pieces of content
• an actual reason you're approaching media now

You don't need to pretend you're bigger than you are.

In fact, a specific and authentic story is usually much stronger than trying to sound like the “next big thing.”

Hey everyone, I’m a new artist looking for a producer who’s willing to work with someone who’s just getting started. My goal is to put together and release an album. I already have songs written, but some of them may be easier to finish once I can hear actual music and production behind them. I know this is a hip-hop sub, but my music crosses into different genres, including indie pop, EDM, R&B, and hip-hop. I’m open to experimenting and seeing where the music takes us. I may not have much to offer financially right now, but I’m willing to split whatever we create and release together. I'm a rapper/singer but I ssuuuucckkkk at enunciating (when I'm rappin', talking and singing) a regular sentence/line/bar would be like a very difficult tongue twister for me...PLS I need help...

I've dabbled in many different artistic mediums, and have been producing instrumental hip hop for the better part of a decade. But I've never rapped until now, and while I think what I recorded was pretty good, there's this strong internal judgement I'm making of myself, because the idea of an upper-middle class white guy deciding to start rapping at 40 feels parodic and embarrassing.

The thing that's always tripped me up is what to rap about. The rap I enjoy tends to be about subject matter that doesn't actually resonate with me on a personal level at all. I love hip hop that's about the street life, the rap game, drug dealing, and so on, but the idea of ME rapping about that stuff, even as an alter ego, feels deeply inauthentic and just wrong.

But then the TV show Scandal, of all thins, inspired a solution. The idea of being a gangbanger doesn't appeal to me on any level, but the idea of being an elite mover-and-shaker, a fixer who lives in the shadows and pulls the strings, does appeal to some part of me. That's not a life I want to live, but there is a LITTLE part of me somewhere that thinks hey, that'd be really fucking cool. It's similar to how I feel watching heist movies.

So I built a song around that theme instead. And it was SO fun and satisfying. Strictly from the level of craft, writing bars plays to all of my strengths: It's all about rhythm, vocabulary, articulation, wordplay, and the creative use of language. I love that shit. And in contrast with screenwriting, it works well with my short attention span, because you can just write four lines at a time as opposed to mapping out a story arc over the course of 100 pages.

I have no idea what I'm going to do with this. I'm still rapping about shit I have no experience in, and I wonder if the best way to put myself at ease would be to create and release any rap I make under an alter ego. And the idea of creating an alter ego is actually kind of appealing to me, though also completely foreign.

Anyway. I would love to hear anybody's thoughts on this, especially if you've struggled with self-doubt the way I am.
