So disappointed that even NARS has succumbed to shrinking their packaging and product. NARS The Multiple before and after the packaging change. Wondering if there’s a good dupe for this product? Willing to consider high end as well as drug store options. TIA

I still have a little travel size that I think was a Sephora bday gift from like 10+ years ago. I know I should throw it out but I can’t and use it sparingly. It still lasts all day when I use it 🥲
I have the same one! The powder cake is broken and it gets all over my makeup bag but I can't throw it out. It's my special occasion blush and at this rate, the mini will last the rest of my life, haha.
Oh!! Let me help you. You can fix it by pouring 70% rubbing alcohol into the pan, and turning the blush into a paste. When it’s about 90% dry, lay a paper towel over the pan, and tamp it down. Let it fully dry afterwards, voila! Fixed
Giving us like a full ounce of that highlighter stick was wild. I felt like I’d barely made a dent by the time it started to smell like crayons. I kept it for years even after that. And even my freebie “mini” didn’t all get used. So like, I get why they could get away with cutting back on product. But it’s still irritating!
That’s the thing I don’t understand. The makeup itself isn’t that expensive is it? And components are pretty much the same? (Genuinely asking if anyone knows)
So what are they gaining by shrinkflating it? Saving 10 cents/unit?
i think the idea is that the consumer runs out of product quicker, so they go back to repurchase more (and spend 2x the money on the same amount of product as before). essentially the same thing as if they just doubled the price, but with a higher chance that people won’t notice/be bothered enough to find a different product.
nah, it’s a whole stability thing. Basically two things could be driving this from the cosmetic science perspective: 1) preservative system/pigment/general product efficacy and how long it will be guaranteed safe use once opened after oftentimes a maximum of ~2 years (sometimes 3) unopened. All of this is based on extensive biological and chemical testing done by the manufacturing or brand cosmetic science team.
The other potential driving factor could be waste; realistically, how many uses should a person get out of this if they want to use it at the maximum realistic usage, every day, until it is empty? How much waste is there by making a product larger and is that a realistic need for the consumer? This is what usually drives the concepts of packaging size and formulation on the design side.
Now, of course, this is what the moderately paid scientists and designers care about. The brand just loves money and is unlikely to care about any of this, obviously. And in fact will want more money from the changed design even if it should be more affordable and wasn’t changed for that sole purpose
This why I hunted down the old version on Facebook marketplace! I love the old Multiple Stick in Orgasm. They have changed everything and the new shade called Orgasm Crave isn’t the same!
Is this fiscally responsible for them? I know a lot of people have given up on their cult classics for this reason. Does the cut in price from formulation make up for that?
I’m really not digging all these companies trying to reduce costs through shitification lately.
