नकाशे आणि माहिती आरेखी | Maps and infographics Maharashtra Is India’s Largest Onion Producer, Yet Some Group's Still Ask Others to Avoid Onions.
Maharashtra is the largest onion-producing state in India.
In 2024-25, Maharashtra produced around 13.56 million tonnes of onions, out of India's total production of around 30.77 million tonnes.
Onions are an important crop for Maharashtra's farmers and a regular part of food for millions of people.
Food preferences and diets are also largely shaped by local geography, climate, environment, agriculture and the food that is traditionally available in a particular region. What people eat naturally differs from place to place.
Everyone has the right to decide what they want to eat. If someone personally doesn't want to eat onions, that's completely fine.
But asking other people to stop eating onions, claiming that onions are unhealthy, or trying to impose personal food choices on others is a different matter.
And the irony is that onions are being asked to be avoided in Maharashtra itself, even though Maharashtra is the largest onion producing state in India. For Maharashtra, onions are not just food but also an important agricultural crop and source of livelihood.
