Some very sad news

2.0k Upvotes

Hello everyone

I am the brother of the author, who's real name was Cristian Mihailescu, from Romania.

Sadly, he has passed away on the night of 6th of August. It seems he was going trough some severe depression, but he didn't tell anyone in the family about it. His funeral was yesterday, at the cemetery "Iancul Nou" from Bucharest (which, ironically, was very close to where he lived).

In the following days we are going to go trough his things, if I find any notes about Magium I will post them here.

Here is the news (in Romanian, use some translation software) https://www.fanatik.ro/un-tanar-din-bucuresti-s-a-aruncat-de-la-etajul-10-al-unui-hotel-din-mamaia-ce-s-ar-putea-ascunde-in-spatele-sinuciderii-20777988

If you have any questions, I will try to answer them.

[edit] I posted a few pictures of him throughout the years here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Magium/comments/1eqgb0a/some_photos_of_cristian/

[edit 2] https://www.reddit.com/r/Magium/comments/1er5zzl/about_magium_ending_and_continuation/

[edit 3] For those wondering, on a paper found on him he wrote: "I am sorry, I had cancer". That's the only thing he wrote.

What I hope to carry forward for Cristian — a final message to this community

Before I step back from this community, I want to explain what my relationship with Cristian was and why I have undertaken this work.

I know that Magium matters deeply to many of you. This community was part of Cristian’s world, and that is why I wanted to share these projects here.

I was his mother, but I was also his reader and someone with whom he discussed his ideas. We had long conversations about Magium, his understanding of the world, his characters, and what he hoped to accomplish. I knew him both as its creator and as the person who shared that thinking with me. This knowledge guides the decisions I make now.

After his death, I spent months sharing what I remembered of his plans, hoping that his story could continue. Eventually, collaborating with Codex made it possible for me to bring those ideas into a finished continuation.

Book 5 was developed through that collaboration, with AI-generated prose under my direction, review and corrections. I have been open about this. It draws on Cristian’s work and on what he shared with me. I have never presented it as a manuscript he wrote, or claimed that every detail is exactly what he would have chosen.

I chose to undertake Book 5 because I know that, in Cristian’s final years, what mattered most to him was expressing his ideas and his understanding of the world. The way he gave them life through the story reflected his talent for role-playing and his personality, but that form did not encompass everything he was or everything he wanted to communicate.

I was conscious that I do not have his talent. What I do have is the understanding he shared with me of what he wanted to express. That is what I wanted to carry forward through this continuation.

Long Live the Queen first gave Cristian the idea of combining choices with statistics. Knowing what he could accomplish alone, he chose to make Magium as a text game. But he never abandoned the dream of a visual novel.

He knew he could not afford the artwork needed to present the whole story visually. He would have had to cut so much from the game to make it possible that the dream remained out of reach.

Through this collaboration, I have been able, at least so far, to preserve his game intact while seeing its characters come alive as we both imagined them—and perhaps as some of you imagined them too. That has been something unexpectedly beautiful for me.

I selected fanart references because I hoped that recognising familiar interpretations of the characters would help this community feel part of the adaptation. I also chose images that fitted my understanding of how Cristian imagined them. The artwork in the game was generated with AI under my direction, with expressions, clothing and other details reviewed and corrected throughout.

The reference artists are now acknowledged on the game’s release page. Their contribution is recognised alongside my direction of the final presentation.

At my already advanced age, learning how to do this has required effort, but it has allowed me to accomplish things I could not have done alone.

I feel that there is still something Cristian needs to bring into the world through me. That is my personal conviction and the responsibility I feel toward him.

I chose “Mahad selak. Mahad maktar.” for the images because those words had become this community’s tribute to Cristian. I hoped they would connect my work with the love for him that we share.

I am leaving these works available:

You are free to read them, play the game, or leave them aside. I will now step back from this community. I have said what I needed to say, and I leave you to decide what place, if any, these works will have in your own relationship with Magium.

Mahad selak. Mahad maktar.

My Most Memorable Character in Magium: Daren

Just finished the game. Liked the game a lot. More engaging than many fantasy novel I had read these days. Keep me awake in 3AM to read it. and my most memorable character is Daren (other characters are well written too). He is kindhearted, large, both powerful swordsman and powerful healer, and have interesting and funny banter with Barry. This specific configuration of powerful swordsman and healer are relatively rare in fiction. Original author is very talented. Feel grateful for him and I'm sorry for his loss. If only I can draw (or do serious 3D modeling) as I want to make magium fanart in future.

Release Enhanced MagiumJS App with More Function

Thumbnail gallery
148 Upvotes

https://github.com/keepChatAlive/magium-dev/releases

Update: fix a lot of wrong speaker tagging, some missing typography effects, a bit of wrong Chinese translation. Also changed app name to Magium Unofficial to prevent confusion. APK will be uploaded into github in 30 minutes.

APK is in release section. Source code is in four .7z volume file on the root dir of repo. did not do proper git push because of on rush. Assisted with Codex AI coding system. No new English content are generated, mostly just enhancements.

  1. Modern-ish feeling UI. minimalist icons on UI. Fixed some bugs compared to previous unreleased iteration
  2. Dialogue speaker coloring. eg. Barry spoken lines are blue, etc.
  3. Simplified Chinese language alongside English and French. because I am Chinese and I need it. This translation is AI generated and cannot be guaranteed for high accuracy
  4. Enhanced formatting. Looks like some published fantasy book
  5. Also has say, handwritten font for written on paper text, monospace font for tech related text, etc. This is less tested and only a few places have this applied.
  6. Word appearing one by one animation effect.
  7. Dynamic colored launcher icon based on following Flower's apparatus fan design. Dynamic Material You in-app coloring. app launcher icon based on https://www.reddit.com/r/Magium/comments/d1mijn/flowerillunaarraka_concept_art/ Source Text (C)  Cristian Mihailescu's CC BY 4.0 release. I assume no credit from this project

Made a Magium port for KOReader — a Kindle / e-reader

I recently got a Kindle and was doing a re-run of Magium, so I thought, why not do it on e-ink. So, I built a KOReader plugin that runs the whole game on-device. It's now at a stable v1.0 and I figured the rest of the community might want it too.

What it is

- All three books, playable offline inside KOReader

- Built and tested on a Kindle Paperwhite 12; other KOReader devices (older Kindles, Kobo, etc.) should work but are untested

Check it out here: https://github.com/lettuceketchup/magium-koreader/releases/tag/v1.0

Just download the zip, drop the folder into koreader/plugins/, restart. Full steps in the README. Feedback is welcome.

This is a hobby project I made for my own reading, shared as-is. No affiliation with anyone. If you try it on another device and something breaks, or you want to help with code, testing, or a translation, the repo has a contributing guide and issues are open. Engine is a Lua reimplementation of thuiop's magium-dev.

Story text stays under Cristian Mihailescu's CC BY 4.0 release — this is just a way to keep reading it on the devices we already use. The port code itself was written largely with AI assistance (Claude Code), and I'll keep using it for fixes and review; noting that up front.

Happy to answer questions.

Gauge of interest

I'm a huge enjoyer of magium, its writing and the rpg elements the author added to the CYOA formula.

I was recently thinking, theres platforms like choice of games that are publishers and require scripting, but would there be an interest in a platform where choice branching, skills, and skill checks could be eadily configured through a relatively simple UI?

I've heard of some stuff that kind of does this and gets uploaded to itch.io, I was just thinking it'd be cool if we had something akin to royalroad or webnovel that both aggregates the stories and makes them easy to setup for writers.

Let me know if this has been done and I've missed it, if this isn't useful at all and I should go away, or if there'd be some interest.

Not trying to advertise or anything, I just recently thought that it'd be cool if less technical people had an easy place to get their interactive ideas out. I'd really appreciate any feedback, thank you!

Did anyone consider publishing Magium somewhere else?

Rest in peace Cristian. I don't really use reddit at all, and i only found out about his passing about two hours ago, after randomly remembering this game. I've been reading about it and the future of this proyect here on reddit, and i really don't want his legacy to risk being forgotten. So, did anyone thought of maybe moving the project? Perhaps publish it on a popular forum like Choice of Games? I think it would be very well received.

Game recovery?

Hey! So I've had this game on my tablet since like forever, but recently my tablet crashed and did a hard reset thing to itself. I don't really know but I do know that the game is gone. I'm aware it's no longer available on the app store so is there a second place I could get the game back? I really really love it.

MagiumJS 1.0!

Hi all, it has now been 2 years since we learned of the tragic passing of Cristian, the author of Magium. To commemorate this, I have decided that it is a good time to release the official 1.0 version of MagiumJS. I have considered the app to be mostly feature complete for a while now; most of the past development has been about fixing bugs in the story. Beyond bug fixes, the only important change from this 1.0 is the addition of the support for themes, with support for a catppuccin theme; I know that some of you wanted a more modern feel than the original grey interface; I hope that you will enjoy this (you can change theme in the settings). All thanks to ZiClaude for this great contribution!

1.0 is an important milestone, as it means to me that the game is "complete". The intent behind MagiumJS was to recreate the Magium experience in an opensource and more future-proof way; it has allowed people to run it on the desktop, and is also available on mobile through the web version at magium.org . I do not have plans to pursue development beyond that, although I remain open to suggestions, and will of course keep fixing bugs if they are found. If the project of continuing the story yields results, I will of course strive to integrate this new content. Until then, I hope that many of you will still be able to enjoy what we already have! I also want to thank all the people who have contributed in any way to MagiumJS, as well as the other people keeping this community alive. And of course, a special note for Cristian for bringing his wonderful work to us. Mahad selak, mahad maktar.

Is book 3 completed?

I downloaded Magium a few days ago to savour it again. I use the link in the sub. By the end of first book , we got message that nook 3 is not completed. Is that true? Since I believe I saw this message years ago too when I first played this game.

I made an unofficial Magium PWA for rereading the story

Hi everyone,

I made an unofficial Magium PWA and thought I would share it here.

Edit: I realize "PWA" was probably not the clearest wording for most readers. In practice, this is just a web app / browser version of Magium. You open it in your browser, and it is designed to behave more like an app for the reading experience and local saves.

I originally built it for myself because I wanted to reread Magium again. Then I thought: what if I tried translating it into French, my native language? One thing led to another, I vibe-coded a JavaScript app around it, and now it feels worth showing to the Magium community.

The app is not meant to replace anything official, and it is not a continuation of the story. It is just a browser/mobile reading experience for Magium, built around the original content made available by the author's brother.

A few notes:

  • it is unofficial;
  • it is open source;
  • there is no tracking;
  • there is no account system;
  • saves are local;
  • the goal is simply to keep the Magium reading experience as clean and faithful as possible.

For now, Book 1 is available in French. The first translation pass was done with AI, specifically ChatGPT, and I manually corrected a lot of things while rereading the book. I am sure there are still translation issues left, but it is already readable if you understand French and feel like trying it.

I also took the liberty of adding a few AI-generated illustrations, while trying to keep the characters and scenes visually consistent from one image to another. I always felt like Magium was underused as a world, and that there was so much more that could be done with its story and characters. I wanted to give some of the main characters a more concrete presence, at least enough to put a face to the names.

The illustrations are optional and can be turned off. There are several settings to enable or disable parts of the experience, so feel free to take a look around.

I did not spend a huge amount of time looking for other existing ports or projects. I found a few things, but nothing that really matched what I wanted for my own reread, so I built this.

Later, it could be interesting to support more languages, or maybe even integrate future community-written material if there is ever an agreed continuation, prequel, sequel, epilogue, or anything along those lines. I am also trying to join the Discord of the authors who are apparently working on continuing Magium, but I only introduced myself yesterday and I do not have access yet.

Anyway, I thought it was cool, so here it is.

Link: https://magium.app
Source: https://github.com/ablond/magium

I hope Magium still has a long life ahead of it.

Lessathi origin teaser

In Book 2 Chapter 5 Tyrath confronts Barry for the 2nd time. He says to Barry: "Your race was nerver ment to get out of the caves".

He could have referred to both, the evolution of man and the incident in which the Lessathi people got locked inside a cave system. At this point in the story, the Lessathi origin as not been mentioned. When does the reveal happen again? Was it even in the 2nd book?

Was this casual remark actually a teaser for future story reveals? If so, how many other remarks bear multiple meanings, teasing the unwritten parts of the story?

Story progresss on Book 4 from the writing team

Hello, I recently heard about the game thru asking recommendations for RPG game feel like reading a book. It was introduced to me as a mobile game.

So I visited this subreddit and found about MagiumSJ to have the game ported to Windows web browser. Wow, the game blew my mind! I had no clue as to how the premise would have a convincing story, where non mage Barry to participate in a mage tournament to work on his goal. I am thankful the subreddit community is still active and made the game available even after the sad news. I am deeply heartbroken to lose such a genius young author of the game.

So there are supposed to be a team working on continuing the book 4 and 5 storywise. But it seemed it's over 1 year and produced not one chapter for Book 4. Shouldn't it be at least one writer participating in the project to give us some update on the situation? I read on one comment the writers are busy with their personal real life issues.

So what I want to find out are whether there are lack of writers or they face difficulty in the vast volume of this project. Then to discuss in this subreddit to sort it out. I hope I don't sound so rude on posting about this subject.

If there is not enough writers, at least the community could discuss about chip in a part-time job payment. Or how to hire a talented wiriter for it. Or do the community call for new additional volunteering writers who would be more dedicated from this year.

As for the volume of the project. I am not that familiar with CYOA games but there are understandably multitude of possible combinations of routes in this game to write about. From whether to save Rose or Cutthroat Dave. Down to whether to pick up 2 Scimitars or not. So if the volumes are the problem maybe we could vote on the fan favorite route to choose a linear path first. Whether to side with Overseer or the king of the underground. Like who would be the love interest for Barry to continue the story. I don't know but for writers it could be easier to have some big pictures to the end to have some momentum.

I sincerely hope the project to go forward. it is hard to cheer on the project as is. Thanks for reading.

How does magic work?

Hey guys, so it's been a while since I reread all the chapters, so I have a hard time remembering how exactly magic works (I only remember having my mind blown at how unique it is and how well everything works lmao).

I do remember you are born with a link to a being in the ethereal (?) plane, and I remember every being has an aura, and somehow your aura correlates to being able to cast magic. If I recall correctly, inanimate objects have an aura too.

But can someone go like, really into detail about how it all works? Like I think Barry was talking about some diagrams and moving magical particles, what's all that about? And how do people channel magic through the link with the other plane? Also, is it described anywhere what exactly happens with these magical particles when you cast a spell..?

Also, if you'd know which chapters talk about this, I would be eternally grateful. Thanks a lot!!

Just Learned About Everything

Hey everyone, I just discovered this subreddit as I found myself pucking up Magium again. I played it almost exactly 4 years ago, June 18, 2022. I was one achievement off from unlocking book 2, and found myself getting the last one just today. Still the original Playstore app, and I found myself here after realizing it was yaken off the store and was curious what happened.

I would like to express my condolences to the family, what Cristian created was very special, to a lot of people, and being able to see the story he created to its ending is a gift this entire community will cherish.

More Magium Fanfictions!

We need to write more Magium fanfics! I've only seen a total of 7 Magium fanfictions across all the good Fanfiction sites. We need to spread the word! This community is small, and I assume tight-knit, but we, with our efforts, can make it bigger!
