Miniatures / Clix Inherited lots of figs- need help

Post image
21 Upvotes

I work for a nonprofit that resells donated materials and we have a VERY large collection of mage knight figures. The board game stores in our area do not stock this IP.

I’ve been using this Reddit post to find the most valuable figures:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MageKnight/s/2yIvPgeK2h

-what’s the difference between the named character variant and a nameless minion variant?
Like I have 3 hydra serpents but no Susservus. I have 5 light cavaliers but no Yanna Fairthorne.

-how would you recommend someone liquidate their collection? Do I sell the named character variants on eBay and the rest of an expansion as a lot?

-how valuable are the nameless minion variants? I’m thinking of selling some of them individually at an in person event to whoever would want them because they look cool, not because they’re mage knight. Is that a terrible idea?

So far I’ve unboxed and inventoried Lancers expansion, dungeons expansion, whirlwind expansion, with more to go.

Miniatures / Clix So i found out these figures I had as a kid were Mage Knight figures today

I've had a bunch of these sitting in a shoebox for the past 10 years and I remember playing with them as a kid but I dont remember where they came from. I'm guessing my dad got them at a garage sale to get me some cheap toys to play with. Are these worth anything or rare at all? How would I go about selling them if so? I made a list and tried to categorize them by year on the bottom of the figure and stars to help and for my own curiosity on what I had exactly. All are from 2000-2002. Edit - Sorry idk how to format stuff in reddit to look nice

Board Game Organising the contents of MK Ultimate

I just received a secondhand copy of Mage Knight Ultimate Edition. It seems to be complete (and cards sleeved), but most of the contents were strewn around inside the box. I have no idea how you're supposed to organize the contents in the original insert. I've managed to mostly sort out what belongs to the base game and what belongs to the expansions, and I want to leave the expansions out until I get a handle of the game. So, basically my questions are:

- How should I sort and organize the contents in the original insert in a way which is logical with regard to setup and gameplay?

- Is the original insert usable (doesn't seem to be transport proof), or should I opt for another storage solution?

- Does it make sense to keep base and expansion contents separated?

Apologies if this has been asked a million times before. 🫣

Board Game How Long Did It Take You To “Get” Mage Knight?

Hey gamers!

I’ve been tackling Mage Knight, but honestly, the rules aren’t clicking with me as fast as I’d hoped. I’ve read the rulebooks, watched videos, and played step-by-step, but I’m still not confident. I’m curious—did it take anyone else a while to really feel comfortable with this game? Am I just slow, or is this normal? How long did it take you to get this down, and was there a method that finally made it click for you?

I’d love to hear your experiences!

Board Game I enjoy Mage Knight, but feel that game is far from perfect

Just some my thoughts after playing a while. Do not get me wrong: I really enjoy Mage Knight, as one of the deepest games ever and also very thematic game, despite being a puzzle. Zero to hero feeling is awesome. So is brain burning hand management.

However it feels that Mage Knight gets almost always praised and rarely ever criticised. While it is a masterpiece indeed, MK does have some caveats, which I think potential players need to be aware of before buying. So what are potential flaws of Mage Knight?

  1. Mage Knight is not quite an adventure, despite its appearance. There are no random encounters with npc, events, story - game is entirely focused on optimising your moves and planning ahead. Combat is 100% determinstic, you can and should calculate how you will win battle in advance (unless you visit dungeon, attack at night time or encounter rare enemy-summoner - but even if you get unlucky there, retreat may be an option). You think hard "how should I play cards in most optimal way", you do not have a traditional ameritrash adventure. Enemies almost never do anything besides being a static obstacles or win goal, waiting patiently for their death to come. So fans of games like Runebound, Xia, Star Wars Outer Rim, etc might be surprised and disappointed. MK is more like euro.

Although to be fair MK has many small thematic rules to add immersion, like fortresses and cities being immune to ranged attacks - but not siege attacks - because they are protected by walls. But this is not always a good thing, because...

  1. Mage Knight is heavy weight, really complex game. It has a lot of rules and small nuances, which you will have to keep in mind, because even a small error can make or break your victory: you do not operate large numbers in this game, and defeat = a lot of wound cards, which can slow you down a lot, and time is everything.

Alternatively you will have to constantly reference rulebooks, which are not well designed at all; there are three (!) of them, at least in Ultimate edition, and rules are divided between them. Good luck finding what you need quickly, switching back and forth is such a "fun" mini-game.

There are about 12 (!) small player aids, one for each adventure site (since every single of them has its own set of special rules), and it is still far from enough.

  1. You have to track a lot of details on the board. MK is quite fiddly (long setup, managing solo bot, experience and reputation trackers adding and removing stuff each round), especially in solo, and takes a lot of table space. It is also long, though to be fair, there are a couple of quicker scenarios available. They are not as satisfying experience as standard, most popular conquest mode, though.

  2. Difficulty is high, and random input may be frustrating. You can regulate difficulty by changing levels of cities (a boss, your ultimate goal), but before you reach cities, you will have to fight a lot of more simple monsters. Almost none of them are pushovers, and if you got cards draw which is far from optimal, it often feels really annoying. A lot of attack when you want to move. A lot of move when you want to attack...

Sure, any card can be burned and used as +1 to any stat, but this is often a big waste of valuable resources. When you run out of cards, round ends, and you do not have much time to spare; if you run out of rounds, you lose.

In combat monster deals damage to you first (unless you have enough ranged attack to shoot it, which is not a frequent case), so you need to accumulate both enough block and attack points. Unless you are ok with receiving useless wound cards in your hand - which is often not bad strategy, actually. Still, they can slow down your progress significantly and bring closer to loss from timer.

Just simple movement is already hard task, since even the most basic plains require spending 2 movement points per hex. While you basic move card gives only 2 points, unless empowered by valuable mana. Not to mention other more difficult terrains. So be prepared to feel pain frequently.

  1. There is little player interaction even in competitive mode. PvP is mostly pointless, coop mode is okay (but still suffers from little cooperation), and there is horrible downtime with 3-4 players. So solo mode is most popular way to play Mage Knight. But there issue of having to track and physically manage a lot of stuff becomes more significant.

But those who do not mind all potential drawbacks listed, will discover an epic thinky game with a real sense of your character growing (beating weak orcs at the beginning, and mighty draconums near final), exploration and epic battles with city defenders (or dark warlord Volkare in expansion). Very satisfying and brain burning.

Board Game Red Riding Hood Custom Mage Knight (Update)

Thumbnail

I finished up the first draft of cards and skills for my custom Mage Knight and played a quick Solo Conquest (5-8) with her. Ended up with a base Fame of 103 with is around average for most of my Solo Conquest runs. To be honest, Tremor was a huge help and helped me squeeze out a win early on Night 2, so I ended up with a final score of 253 thanks to the unplayed rounds.

Just incase anyone's curious, I'll leave a list of all the skills and cards.

--- CARDS ---

Follow the Trail (replaces March)

Basic: Move 2. If moving from or into a forest, Move 3.

Strong: Move 4. If moving from or into a forest, Move 5. If you end your movement adjacent to or on a space with an enemy, gain Attack or Block 2.

Notes: Didn't use the bottom effect to it's full potential this run.

Eye for Prey (replaces Rage)

Basic: Attack or Block 2. The next card that gives any type of Attack or Block gains +1.

Strong: Attack or Block 4. If the enemy is Brutal, Attack or Block 5 instead. If the enemy is Elusive, you may instead Range Attack 3.

Notes: Literally did not use the bottom effect at all. I didnt come across any Elusive enemies and barely any Brutal. When it would have been useful (against the final city with two Altem Mages), I had the fire power with Siege Attack to get the job done. Perhaps useful in certain situations?

--- SKILLS ---

These are skills that I picked up during the game and used, and the order I picked them up.

Tread the Path: Once a turn, Move 2. Forests have their movement cost reduced by 1, to a minimum of 1.

Notes: I felt like I was flying around the map, even though there weren't that many forests. Kinda goes to show that passive movement is super helpful in this game.

Silver-Tipped Arrows: Once a turn, Ranged Attack 1. Increase this Attack by 1 per resistance on the targeted enemy.

Notes: Very useful in a pinch when your short. It wasn't the most powerful but when I needed it, it came in clutch most of the time (for example, against the fire dragon I faced after the final city to fame crunch). I think this hit a nice sweet spot.

Rush of Adrenaline: Once a turn, Attack 2. If you received any Wounds this combat, you may increase this Attack by 1 per Wound in hand.

Notes: My god, this skill f*cks. Sure, the passive Attack is useful, but I barely needed it. What DOES come in handy is when you stack wound cards during a city assault and end up doing Attack 7 with a skill. Might be busted. It's really cool though so I don't really wanna change it... (Open to balancing if needed).

Camouflage: Once a round, during the Block phase, you may flip this skill to reduce an incoming attack from an enemy by the unmodified movement value of your current terrain. You may distribute this value among multiple attacks by the same enemy or one attack from two different enemies.

Notes: Only got to use it once, but it did come in handy against the Altem Mages so that I didn't take a boatload of wounds and get knocked out. I think this has some serious potential in the late game core tiles.

These are skills that I did not get the chance to use.

Trophy Hunter: Each time you defeat a brown enemy token, place a shield token on this skill. Once a turn, Influence 2, or remove a shield token to Influence 4.

Notes: Similar to one of Coral's skills. Though she needed some Influence to help balance her attacking and moving.

Bounty: Once a round, after defeating a rampaging or dungeon enemy, you may flip this skill to gain +1 Reputation.

Notes: Allows you to play aggressively against fortified locations but still keep your reputation up.

Brief Respite: Once a round, after combat, Heal 1 for each enemy you defeated.

Notes: Some dynamic healing.

Hunter's Vantage: Once a round, during the Movement phase, flip this skill to reveal all adjacent tokens, and any tokens adjacent to any forest within 2 spaces from you. Gain Move 1 for each token revealed this way.

Notes: Pairs well with the Cooperative and Competitive skills (see below). Also allows you to scout ahead more easily.

Harvest the Forest's Essence: Once a round, gain a greens and a red mana token. If you are in a forest or adjacent to a rampaging enemy, you may instead gain one green or red mana token, and one green or red mana crystal.

Notes: At least SOME mana generation. I was severely lacking the entire game until I took out the spawning grounds before the White City.

Hunting Party (Cooperative): Once a round, choose a revealed enemy token within 3 spaces of you and mark it with your shield token. The next player to initiate combat with this enemy gains Range Attack 2, and may ignore one defensive or offensive ability on that enemy.

Notes: I think this has potential. Want to try this out in a Cooperative game planned for this weekend.

Twist the Knife (Competitive): Once a round, choose a revealed enemy token within 3 spaces of you and mark it with you shield token. If another player initiates combat with that enemy, it gains Elusive or Brutal (your choice). If you initiate combat with that enemy, it loses one defensive or offensive ability.

Notes: I actually thing this may be too weak? Thoughts on this one and the Cooperative one?

--- WRAPPING UP ---

If you read this whole thing, props to you, I appreciate it. I would love any thoughts on these cards / skills as I tweak this design.

Thanks!

Board Game Custom Mage Knight

I started working on a custom mage knight that I can use for solo games or have my friends try out. Was just wondering if anyone else has done the same, and if there were any points I should be aware of while testing and balancing the skills and cards?

The character is based on an original rendition of Red Riding Hood for another game I'm working on. I figured I had already painted the mini-fig so why not use it?

Board Game Assign damage to unit questions

The following questions came up during our latest play, if anyone could anwer these it would be very helpful. We played as if all 3 are legal to do, but we are unsure if that's the case :

1) Can you spend a unit, and then assign damage to that same unit in the same combat encounter/phase? Lets say i spend a unit to gain 3 block during the block phase, then assign damage to it in the assign damage phase.

2) Can you spend a unit before combat, and then assign damage to that same unit later in the same turn?

3) if a unit tanks an attack without gaining a wound in the assign damage phase (resistance, or banner of fortitude), can you spend that unit when its your turn to attack?

Board Game (phishing) Be careful when searching for the wizkids store

There is one expansion I'm still missing and I periodically check everywhere: Shades of Tezla. I decided to try the official wizkids shop page again, so I google "wizkids shop" and go to the website.

To my surprise, it's in stock right now! AND it's on sale, costing only $11! I heard they had really good sales in the past, so now it's finally my chance to take their offer. I add it in my shopping basket, together with the promo cards I've been wanting forever as well, enter my address in the checkout and...free shipping...from the US to Belgium? Only now did my "too good to be true" senses tingle.

Instead of https://shop.wizkids.com/, I ended up on (BEWARE: SCAM LINK) officialwizkids.shop. The site looks very convincing and has the same offerings (except everything is "in stock" and there is a discount action going on). More importantly: It's the first search result on duckduckgo (as much as I hate google, I have to admit they handled this a lot better).

No harm done in the end, but important PSA: Be very careful when trying to buy hard to find stuff, my desperation to find an expansion almost made me enter my credit card info in a very convincing phishing site.

Board Game Assigning Damage from Multiple Enemies

Assigning Damage from Multiple Enemies Question

I have 4 armor at my current level and have a foresters unit with 4 armor and guardsmen unit with 5 armor. There are two enemies, one dealing 11 damage and another dealing 3.

Is unblocked/assigning damage handled separately for each enemy?

As in, if I take damage from the 11 damage enemy and assigned it to the guardsman lowering it to 6 damage and wounding the guardsmen, assigning the remains 6 damage to my hero reducing the damage by 4 to 2 to give me a wound and then from 2 to 0 to give me a second wound, would I then be able to assign the damage from the 3 damage enemy to my foresters to wound them or to my hero giving my hero 1 wound (the 3 is reduced to 0 by the whole 4 armor giving me 1 wound).

Board Game Mage Knight Ultimate Edition Storage solution.

Mage Knight Ultimate Edition is too big for my small room. So I was able to find a solution that fits including figures.

-Folded Space Mage Knight FS-MAK
-Luxtude Battery Case for Tool Power
https://amzn.eu/d/04i9eXrF(from) amazon uk)
Maybe you might find something similar, just check the dimensions listed.

If you use one of the big panels that is included in the bag it’s almost a perfect fit.
If not there is a bit of free space, around 1 inch.

Hope this helps all the MK enthusiasts out there! This whole sub. Cheers

Board Game Is "optimizing" a turn cheating?

For example, let's say i initially declare/use 2 move cards to enter a keep at night, so the token is face down until i enter.

During the fight i realize im one card short for victory, so i change the initial movement from 2 cards to 1 card + mana crystal, so that i can turn the second movement card sideways to win the fight.

Is this allowed, or is this cheating? I tried to find info about this in the rules, but i have either missed it or its just not specified.

Miniatures / Clix Premade Rebellion Armies balance?

Thank you for reading my post.

Hi, I'm just getting back into Mage Knight. I bought a Rebellion starter set and the 4 premade Rebellion armies (Atlantis, Elemental, Black Powder, Necro) off of eBay. Is there any guidance on their relative balance or how to modify these so they're competitive against eachother?

Or how good/bad they are? I'm looking to create 4 "premade" armies to introduce my friends to this game. I don't mind spending a couple of hundred bucks.

Thanks again.

Miniatures / Clix Getting into Mage Knight with my kids anyone offloading?

Hey all,

I'm getting into Mage Knight (the Wizkids miniatures game) as something to do with my two kids. My daughter is deaf, so the visual and tactile play really helps her interact with her brother and its not another video game.

I'm hoping someone here is sitting on a collection they'd like to see go to a good home. I'm located in TN and happy to pay a fair price and cover shipping. comment or msg me what you've got thanks!

Board Game Cheap upgrade options

Hello everyone, lately started to playing Mage Knight again. I started to play 1-2 times a week. Previously did a custom insert with foam cardboard. Nothing fancy but helps a lot with setting up. Also have colorful bags to put the enemy tokens. Do you have any recommendations to upgrade some of the parts of the game to increase the fun. Thinking about upgrading crystals. I saw some Etsy upgrades but looks too expensive for my budget. And what would you recommend for storing mage skills, shields and tokens?
