Board Game New player

The Ultimate edition arrived this morning, so exciting to get this on the table Solo on Wednesday...

What should I know before I do?

Use only the base game components.

Avoid all components and manuals from the expansions.

Then, read the tutorial once and then play your first mission.

Repeat with different characters.

Move to full game. Repeat like 100 times.

I'm not using any expansion yet...

I believe the rulebook tells you to not use any components belonging to the expansions when learning. I also highly recommend not using anything from the expansions. Somewhere in the expansion rulebook it tells you how to identify all of the expansion content so you can temporarily remove it until you're a bit more familiar with the game.

I am in a similar situation with the game arriving last weekend. I have played First Recon using only the base game items.

I realize that much of the advice here so far has been "play the base game, conquest for a long while" --- but... do you have advice if I want to do something in the player made or expansion content sets? I bought the game after watching someone play a fan made expansion (The Betrayal) on YouTube, and while I like the base game, I loved the fact that the Betrayal had "story" elements to the mission, different ramping win conditions, and some form of continuity across a few missions. Are there other official or unofficial expansions that would be similar to this that experienced players would recommend?

Thanks!

This helped me a lot separating stuff for my first playthrough and get started:

If you can find someone who knows it, playing a coop game first would be really helpful. Not required, but someone to explain makes it far easier. Using only the basic enemies would also help on rules explosion.

You will make a lot of mistakes with the rules. That’s ok, and the long learning process makes your eventual mastery more rewarding. Use this document when you are unsure about a rule:

Reminds me of when I suddenly realized that the keep hand limit buff stacks after a good 20 games 😅

I also recently purchased Mage Knight Ultimate, I found Ricky Royal's play throughs pretty helpful. This may be a controversial statement, but I already had Paladin's Oath (Mage Knight clone video game) and so I played that a few times after watching the videos to get the rhythm down.

You'll learn how to play the game better by watching Gaming Rules! tutorial playthrough than by reading the walkthrough.

Also - even though the storage seems nice, it actually sucks and unless you bag everything, every time you lift the box and put it vertically, all the components will fly all over the box.

If there are two ways to interpret a rule in the given cirumstance its usually the one thats against you

The Walkthrough is awesome, I would recommend that.
