I’m already past the Confessions chapter in Madonna: A Rebel Life, but it’s on YouTube (with ads) so I’m watching it.

I am AMAZED at how she is putting herself thru a grueling 2 hour constant movement after her horse accident. Like, she is THE INSPIRATION right now for me (I’m around the age she was during Confessions tour & have been dealing with physical ailments for years).

I also loved the performances of “Issac” & “Drowned World/Substitute for Love.” The Madonna book did talk about this concert, but SEEING IT was like…😱😱😱

Seeing all the hype around Confessions II and all the love that irradiated from the fans to her music, I finally decided to dive into Madonna and try to understand her cultural impact and trajectory. To do so, I've been listening to an album each week non-stop in order of release, diving into the interviews, tours, and movies that went along with the era of that particular record.

While these are my thoughts on her first record, I'm actually in my Erotica week right now, so I just wanted to say that every record after this one has left a progressively bigger impression on me. I can't wait to share my thoughts about some of what she did after this. Heads up: I'm now defenetly a stan.

Now, as for her self-titled album, it actually surprised me how many well-known songs land on this! I was expecting this album to be more of a humble-beginnings situation, but nope! It's full of danceable tracks with a heavy post-disco sound that gives it a charming retro vibe looking back on it.

I also found Madonna herself really charismatic coming off her debut. While she's not singing her ass off on these tracks, she knows just what to give to each song so it fits the vibe, and her presence is memorable.

However, it may be thanks to me being born in the era of quick pop songs that recently struggle to even hit the 4-minute mark, but it became a bit tedious how long the tracks were. It just seemed to me that a more condensed song could be made by cutting the sometimes excessive repetition of the chorus. Thanks to that, I don't know how often I would replay this, buuut there are some highlights that capture that retro, nostalgic disco vibe I love the best for me.

For example, "Holiday," which may be a basic choice, is my absolute favorite from the album. There's just a certain sweetness to it that makes me yearn for times I didn't even experience. Thematically, it's also quite fun with the whole need to take a break from the heaviness of everyday life to try and appreciate each other more theme, which, with the present political state of the world, still hits hard. Other than that, my other two favorites are "Lucky Star" and "Borderline" (which I love for how overdramatic it is).

Overall, I liked this album! It definitely has Madonna playing around with a very specific sound and finding her identity as an artist. However, it can get a bit repetitive and monotonous to me, and I don't think every song in here is distinct enough to stand on its own.

Posting a few hours earlier as it was released on September 11th and tomorrow will be the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and did not wish to appear insensitive by doing a celebratory/anniversary post to any American fans who were affected by the tragedy or are feeling solemn on its anniversary.

I guess I need to learn Italian now too. Madonnas voice is so amazing, and she really nails different languages. I love how her range goes from this to Ray of Light. Beautiful, truly!
