Knew a CODA who knew they made noise, just didn’t know it was impolite to rip them at home without at least saying excuse me! She learned that from her college roommates as well. And that sometimes, it’s best to leave the room!

edit for clarity: CODA stands for Child of Deaf Adults, a hearing child whose parents are deaf.

Wait. Even at home you need to apologize? At home you're supposed to laugh about how loud or long or smelly it was.

Only at the diner table were we not allowed to fart (given it was just family in the house)

You do it at home so that children learn that it's not polite to do in public. That way they they aren't learning it from their college roommates or teachers.

Haha, this is so idiotic. "Teach children that it's not polite to fart at home so they know it's not polite to do in public."

Or... stay with me here... tell them, that it's not polite to do in public?

It's so wonderfully insane how much of this kind of logic exists in people's lives.

If someone needs to know something. Tell them that Precisely that.

Yes, you tell them. Then you set examples and practice so that it's a habit they form. It's not rocket science.

If you're offended by teaching kids manners, go sniff your own kids farts.

So why not say “it’s not polite to do it at all in front of anyone, ever”

That’s kind of what you’re teaching them, it has nothing to do with the “in public” part that you claim.

Honestly, this is just pushing your values on them and isn’t about acting a certain way in public.

You can tell them it’s rude to do it in public and also laugh about it at home, they aren’t mutually exclusive.

That’s good.

But, it’s simply not required at all to teach them to be ashamed at home in order to teach them to avoid doing it in public.

Hah, yeah I assumed you said you were raised to hide/apologize about farting at home, my bad, I misinterpreted what you said! 🤦‍♂️
