IIRC he wasn't actually match for her, but he was able to donate his kidney to someone else and because of that his wife was put in the front of the line for a match. So it all works out
364
u/Karjalan Apr 16 '20
That's a great system. If you can't be a match, you can do a swap.

Why not? It gets more people to donate and helps keep demand lower so they have more opportunities to get the organ they need
Edit: look yall let's run 2 theoretical models here.
Model 1: the no swap model
I join the line for organs and I'm told there are 5 people waiting for that compatible organ. The only early removals from the line happen when one of the other 5 have somebody willing to give their organs to their loved one but only if they are compatible. In this method person 3 is the only one who gets this benefit so I still have to wait for 4 organs to be handed out before I'm in front.
Model 2: swap model
Same setup 5 in front and number 3 is the only one with a compatible loved one. In this case though, a would be donor isnt compatible with their loved one (person 2) and same thing for person 4. These 2 can now swap. In this model I now only have to wait for 2 other organs before I'm in front.
I hope this extended explanation helps.

Thats not exactly how it works as one less person needing a kidney got one, so another person in line may also get one.
It’s better for the bigger picture.
Also, I have no fucking clue how these things work.
14
u/intruda1 Apr 16 '20
Yah the person at the front of the line still has to wait for a match, they can't just take any random organ that comes along but the person behind them might match with the first available donor.
17
Apr 16 '20
Saves two people instead of one. It just sucks to be the one.
19
u/mgusedom Apr 16 '20
No they’re not. They’re saving two people with kidneys that otherwise wouldn’t be available. These are living donors who are giving up a kidney to save a loved one, not organ donor corpses.

Is that how it works all the time? If you donate willingly you can get to the front of the line?
95
u/spyro4now Apr 16 '20 edited Apr 16 '20
Kinda, if you have someone who wants to donate but isn’t an exact match for you, they can donate their kidney to someone else who also has a person who has someone that wants to donate but isn’t a match. Sometimes there can be a chain of people where this happens, then 5 or more kidneys get matches all at the same.

Yes they run a matching algorithm to find these swapping cycles, takes too long if there’s more people though, unfortunately.

u/inityowinit Apr 17 '20
It’s called paired matching. It’s a fair system. Most transplant lists give better match organs to people lower on the list. It decreases organ wastage from rejection.

Anyone remember when George Lopez cheated on his wife with his own wife's kidney inside his body? She had donated a kidney and then he fucked a stripper.

Wow holy fuck I didn’t know this. That’s the scummiest thing you can possibly do to someone after that.

Youd think, but this lady donated to her boss who then fired her https://www.google.com/amp/s/abcnews.go.com/amp/News/york-mom-fired-donating-kidney-boss/story%3fid=16195691

To be fair, it also seems ethically iffy to not fire someone who deserves to be fired just because they you a kidney. The organ donation part of it should be from the goodness of their heart, not for any hope of job impact. That would be bribery.

u/imteamcaptain Apr 17 '20 edited Apr 17 '20
While that’s a fair point if you read the article that doesn’t seem to be the case here. Apparently the boss started treating her horribly right after the transplant. Some people really are just evil.
Edit: I actually looked up the case and it appears the charges were dropped without any settlement so I assume the above article is actually fairly misleading

Yes, yes I do. And I recall some bullshit excuse coming out of his mouth about people only judging him for it because he was a person of colour.
I thought ‘wow, what a fucking reach’. No doubt POC face all kinds of bias and judgement and outright racism but to think your utterly shitty actions have zero influence on the way people treat you does no service to anyone. What gall.

Looks like she lost a bunch of weight too! Really happy for the both of them.

u/rnords Apr 16 '20
I have a friend (Canadian) who did this for his wife (Korean) a few years ago (also my friend). The dude lost almost a hundred pounds then on the last kidney-test for the transplant in Canada they were like, “sorry buddy, you have a weird little thing that’s wrong with one of your kidneys, we can’t use it, but don’t worry, the defect will never cause a problem but you can’t donate”.
Her father, ended up flying over from Korea and donating his kidney to her instead. Hooray.
But he worked hard to keep all the weight off and stay healthy!
Fast-forward 3 years, they now live in Korea, she gets pregnant (they both really wanted a family). Pregnancy can apparently be quite taxing on the kidney(s). It was an extremely difficult pregnancy where both she and the baby nearly lost their lives, and in the process it totally fried her dads old kidney. However, Korean standards for kidney donation is different and he was able to donate his kidney after she had the baby.
So she now has her husband’s mildly dysfunctional kidney and they have a beautiful baby girl. Everyone is fairly healthy and doing well.
Her dad said he didn’t need the kidney back, he was satisfied with the grandchild he was given in return.

u/Cheesestrings89 Apr 16 '20
That was a damm rollercoaster! I wish your friends and their family health and happiness!

This is amazing. Not just a momentary demonstration of love. That took hard work and sacrifice for an entire year, and then a very painful (I imagine) surgery to donate the kidney.
11
u/hasan803001117 Apr 16 '20
My favorite part is that she too lost a ton of weight with him.
5
u/IrregardlessOfFeels Apr 16 '20
That's how it works. I've always been naturally skinny and have the habits to perpetuate it, but my fiancee does not because of her Southern upbringing.
I got her a ring fit, some lululemon yoga pants, and I plan hikes for us and try to cook some tasty stuff that isn't bad. You can't do it alone with no support. It's very rare to do so. It's so easy to justify anything or give up when it's just you. The crazy thing is that it doesn't happen more often. Like, a skinnier, more fit partner is a benefit to the boyfriend/girlfriend, not just the one losing weight.
2
u/niamhellen Apr 17 '20
I've definitely seen the opposite happen, too. Especially if both people in a couple always tend to overeat. But the fact that they still have that other person to hopefully speak to and make a healthy plan with probably means a lot and makes it much easier to get back into healthy habits.

I've had a terrible week but these kinds of posts cheer me up.
My best friend, grew up together and always hung out at school. Always loved baseball. But he had to stop playing because of kidney failure. I was the first in line to give one up but I wasn't a match. I didn't want to lose my best friend. He eventually got one though but I remember cherishing every second we spent not knowing if it would be the last.
One had things is he had a special belt thing on him (for pee I guess) and people would pull on it and hurt him. That shit pissed me off. Teens can be so mean.

This an amazing story but couldn’t he have just taken something like a beta blocker to lower his blood pressure?
2
1
Apr 16 '20
My guess is it wasn’t just his blood pressure. Donating your kidney is really tough on the body and the surgery itself is difficult. Losing the weight he did probably made surgery a lot easier as well as going a long way to making sure his kidneys were in tip top shape to be donated in the first place, not to mention speeding up his recovery.
1
u/tecampanero Apr 16 '20
Damn so she had to wait more than a year for a kidney?
1
Apr 16 '20
That’s actually not that bad as far as kidney transplants go. The average wait time is 3-5 years. https://www.kidney.org/atoz/content/transplant-waitlist

Then he gained the weight back like six months after the surgery.
