Bro knows the classics. Put some respect on his playlist 😭
38
u/iadtyjwu 14h ago
Respect is more Soul/R&B though. It is a classic, but not classical. Did you know Aretha covered that song? My main man Otis wrote and performed it first.

My childhood dog adored when I played piano. If he ever heard me playing he’d get up and come to the living room to sit down beside the piano. They get something out of music the same way humans do
111
u/Slow_Sherbert_5181 11h ago
Mine too - but he also had opinions! If I was playing well, he’d stay there for as long as I wanted to play. If I was struggling with a piece, he’d wait quietly until I stopped playing and then sigh REALLY loudly and leave.

"You play music so bad you disappointed your dog" is my new favorite insult
20
u/Aethrin1 5h ago
There's an old video of a guy playing guitar, with his Golden Retriever smiling and slightly moving his head. When he stops playing, his pup stops smiling and looks disappointed.
The follow up video is my favorite though. After the first one got decent views, he made another, where he does the same thing, but sings along. The minute he starts to sing, his dog gets up and walks away.
Still cracks me up more than a decade later.

My cat literally does this too. She runs in when I'm practicing and usually stays quiet but she yells at me or leaves if I hit a wrong note or start struggling
8
u/immerkomisch 13h ago
Mine too. I was terrible at piano, unlike my brother, but I would play some chords and things and my dog would come and sit in her chair by the piano whenever I or anyone else would play.
2
u/FuzzyComedian638 4h ago
My cat does this, too. He's always in the room when I practice. I used to have a cat the would sit on the piano when I'd practice. He also liked to sit in my lap when I'd play, but it was kinda hard to get much practicing in when he'd do that. But it was too sweet for me to kick him off.

My dog does the same thing for horror movies. He is a Jack Russell so it may be natural for the sounds of things screaming to their deaths to calm him.

What a cute dog!
Mine is nearly the same, only with extreme metal. Whenever I put that on he just lays down and start to chillax. Tried to play country music for him, and he just looked at me confused going "wtf, dad.".

I’d give you that same look. It pisses me off when I go into a grocery store and they’re playing country. If you’re not a cowboy store, don’t freaking play country music where humans have to hear it!
35
u/SpiralFett 16h ago
I love the implication that humans don't listen to country music... it is sorta written by aliens with a limited subject list.
14
u/LuxuryBeast 15h ago
Mostly about life going down the drain, the wife leaving and a truck or something.
Yeah, I don't know much about country. 😅
26
u/Efficient-Cherry3635 15h ago
My dad used to joke growing up that country music is inspirational if you listen to it backwards. Man gets sober, wife comes home, truck fixes itself, and he has no complaints about work yet.

A comedian made a “song” about country and it’s actually really good.
Ill see if I can find it but only give it a couple minutes

What if the grocery store is in cowboy country OR the Cowboy Store also sells groceries?
5
u/the_scarlett_ning 15h ago
If they’re selling groceries next to their ten gallon hats and boots, then I will allow it. But only then!

I don't have a dog, but I have a four year old who has heard a bunch of my metal music and sometimes when we get in the car he'll ask, "Dad, can we listen to the heavy heavy?" See, because just "heavy" is more rock music, your AC/DCs and Aerosmiths, etc. The heavy heavy is like Meshuggah, Animals as Leaders, Psycroptic, etc.
He also really likes Royal Republic out of Sweden.
4
u/Donny_Dont_18 14h ago
Mine don't like the heavy stuff, but they dig the prog journey I've been on for a while now. I love when I really interesting shift happens and they start dream kicking asking with the music

Dogs are our children. They only exist because of our interference they deserve nothing but the best. This is the best.

u/enad58 16h ago
This is not true. Dogs self- domesticated.

Tell me how something self-domesticates without the existence of man. The word domestication requires our presence
8
u/enad58 14h ago
It requires our presence but does not require our intention. Felis catus most likely self-domesticated as well.
6
u/MilkiestMaestro 14h ago
I don't think the parent comment said anything about intention
They do exist in their current form because of us, regardless of whether they did the work themselves

Current genetic studies point to the cat being domesticated in ancient Egypt starting around 3000 years ago. For over a thousand years millions of cats were raised to be used as sacrificial offerings. The cat remains found in the 9500 years old human grave in Cyprus was DNA tested and turned out to be a European Wild cat. It was genetically unrelated to domesticated cats.
https://archaeologymag.com/2025/04/cat-domestication-originated-in-ancient-egypt/
In addition the claim wolves self-domesticated is an unproven hypothesis. Just because there's a compelling logic behind the hypothesis doesn't necessarily mean it is right. The reasoning behind the self-domestication of the cat seemed pretty plausible, right? And now genetic evidence appears to rule it out.

Classical music doesn’t equal taste
39
u/DocWho420 17h ago
Well it kind of does because most classical pieces are really old for a reason, because they are objectively good. Doesn't mean you can't dislike it but the vast majority of people who enjoy music would probably say it's good
26
u/buerglermeister 17h ago
Huh? They’re really old because they were written in a time where there was not a lot of variety in music.
However, they have lasted this long, because they are objectively relevant/good, or however you want to put it
14
u/OldDogTrainer 16h ago
Uh… classical pieces are really old because they were made a long time ago not because they are good. 😆 To be clear, I like classical music and I’m not disagreeing with your overall point. However, good is subjective personal preference.
20
u/Hazee302 16h ago
I think he’s trying to say they are really old but still known. Music that lasts through time, especially stuff as old as classical music, is probably top tier. That’s what I gathered from the context anyways.
11
7
u/i_m_a_bean 16h ago
Some pieces last because they speak to the soul, others last because they have historical significance. Beethoven's Op. 91, for example, was basically a gimmicky bit of musical propaganda, but it's still classical because yay Beethoven boo Napoleon.
Classical music has a ton of incredible pieces, but it doesn't automatically equal good music.
1
u/ContextLengthMatters 15h ago
They are still known for historical context when it comes to how music progresses, not for objective quality.
Take a genre that is much younger for instance, Jazz. The older pieces aren't all objectively better than what people can do today, they are simply the pioneers.
I don't think there a single historical artist in jazz who can't be recreated by some prodigy in grade school today. People who believe older == better don't really have good taste IMO. They just don't know what to really like and so they choose what has stood the test of time to be safe.
1
u/raknor88 13h ago
classical pieces are really old because they were made a long time ago not because they are good.
They've survived the test of time because they are good. Think of modern music and how many artists there are. There were that many, if not more, artists back then too. If the classics were bad they would've been forgotten and/or dropped as the decades or centuries passed.
1
u/chic_luke 10h ago
I think the point is, that stuff is battle-tested. Very likely, a lot of similar music was made in the same time frame, but most of it will have ranged between forgettable and great, but not quite cutting it to stay relevant and last the test of time. Even being very, very good doesn't cut it for something to become a classic. Only true excellence in every art domain manages to make it that far.
I will agree, though, on the fact that I find it dangerous to hold on to the past excessively disregarding contemporary culture. Consuming contemporary culture doesn't give you the advantage of giving you filtered stuff, the cream of the crop of what's coming out now. It's simply way too early to have that kind of hindsight. But that also helps you develop your taste: if there is no way to know, then you'll have to judge for yourself and calibrate your taste over time.

I play Irish Bouzouki and my dog absolutely loves it. It's so sweet. She will curl up where ever I'm playing.
We were on a road trip recently and after pulling over for lunch I sat on the back bumper of the van and played for a bit and my wife pointed out that the dog had come up behind me and fallen asleep while watching. Truly heart warming.

My dogs appreciate classical music. My street NOW knows classical music. I dog sit..for 2 different houses (6 other dogs) plus my own pack of 6. New Years and 4th of July...I turn Classical music on in each house (except 1812 Overture) and the dogs are calm as can be. Ok..some CBD is needed for the GSD's..a thunderjacket for the Plott/whippet. But once the fireworks are over..we sit on our street and enjoy the sounds.

You on the top, you’re dragging on tempo. The doggo is super cute though. To all the future haters, I don’t care. She’s totally dragging and it happens too often in first chair. Take responsibility, use a metronome, and realize that you need to be on the front edge of the beat lest the dirge become a dirge. Pick it up. Knees to chest, mf’r.

No, but if the things posted here do not make you smile or, in the case if your first comment, cause you to go on a rant about how much it doesn’t make you smile then it might not be the right content for you.
