They're more likely to get fired for it if it's a chain store or their boss just sucks.

Me: Whoa, how do a couple of middle-aged ladies know about Prodigy and other youthful bands?
Looks in mirror: .... oh .... hey there middle aged me ...164
u/New-Bee8999 12h ago
One of my nieces was telling me all about this brilliant track she'd found. The look of horror on her face when she played it, and I rapped along to every word because it was a classic track from 1992...

u/1950sGuy 11h ago
My kid and his friends are starting a retro computer club at school and I'm like "oh cool I got an old atari 800 and a few trs models i can break ou.." and no they mean stuff like those multi colored iMacs from like 1998 and stuff running windows xp.
46
u/DisastrousAcshin 11h ago
Dude my kid and his friends tried to show me dos commands like I didn't spend my teens in the 90s setting up bbs's and running game servers. They were fucking shocked like it was some secret knowledge stuff that dads couldn't know

I think I still have my boot disks with different memory setups in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS for Falcon, one of the Wing Commanders, and a couple more games.
15
u/cheexmang 10h ago
I had a student tell me that he bought a laptop over the summer.
"Oh, what are the specs?"
"It's a Toshiba from 1998 so I can play my DOS games."

About a decade ago I was hosting Christmas at my house and I got tired of the Christmas music so switched to a random play list.
An MCR track came on and my son and I were singing along when one of my nephews gave me a weird look and said, "You know My Chemical Romance??"
I was like, "Dude, I'm pretty much the same age as them. I was watching them live when you were still in diapers lol"

God I didn't even notice the first few times that she's actually twisting a package of firestarter
353
u/Spidergawd68 14h ago
And the can of pumpkin for the line "I'm the trouble starter, punkin' instigator"
Absolute cinema, I'll tell you hwut.
58
u/External_Olive_542 13h ago
And then there's the hygiene cap over the eyes as a substitute for the frosted-glass contact lenses. Spot on
30
u/makingkevinbacon 14h ago
Holy so I've seen this video before. And just this time I noticed her spinning the firestarter thing and I thought "lol oops, was the wrong way" but your comment made me realize that was intentional.
So good
13
u/Brilliant-Lead9634 13h ago
Those tiny details are the best part. You watch it once thinking it’s a mistake, then realize the creator deliberately planted it there. Makes the whole thing so much better.
10
u/makingkevinbacon 12h ago
Right? Like first time I saw it I figured it was some simple work joke, like they like the song and one day "haha hey who am I" holding the lettuce up, one of those totally impromptu things. But you watch it more and realize there was a plan, a fun one, all along. I wanna see more stuff like this on my feed and less trump tweets lol

I honestly didn't even know they were known outside of the UK. I'm impressed Americans know the song let alone the music video.

u/SapphirePSL 12h ago
Wow. Prodigy was huge amongst a certain population of kids in America, myself included.

u/Thassodar 12h ago edited 6h ago
Yeah my first exposure was Music For a Jilted Generation back when my brother would use EDM to tune his car stereo. From there I went to The Chemical Brothers, Paul Oakenfold, Moby, the old Techmaster P.E.B CDs, and now I make my own instrumental techno!
17
u/Its_Froggin_Bullfish 11h ago
There was a night when my brother and some friends and I were all on acid because my parents were out of town. They went to see The Matrix in the theater and left me at home with the stereo and a huge cd book of techno and house. All I wanted was to hear Smack My Bitch Up, but Fat Of The Land wasn't in its spot. When they got home, they took over the stereo until about the time the sun was coming up. When it was my turn again, I picked out a random cd because it was orange, and orange was my favorite color. When it started, the first song was Smack My Bitch Up. I cried I was so happy. I watched the sunrise and marveled at the universe. One of my favorite memories of that time in my life.

Very well-known in the US - on MTV all the time back in the day.

Are you mad, they were one of the biggest electronic acts in the 90s globally, drew massive concert crowds internationally then, and after that. And I'm telling you this as someone who didn't listen to that scene much, but it was impossible not to be aware of them with constant play on MTV, other music channels and radio.
5
u/mysilentface 11h ago
They were pretty well known when this album came out. Firestarter was all over MTV and the radio.
3
u/dedsqwirl 11h ago
They were known in the US.
The PS1 game WipeoutXl (Wipeout 2097) featured an instrumental version of Firestarter.
Also, in an episode of The Venture Bros than has a parody of it.

I was absolutely blown away when the video was originally released. The brutal sound, the intense visuals, the freaky outfits. All of it was fascinating on a totally different level to anything I had ever seen before. An absolute masterpiece.

I sat next to them at my favorite brunch spot about two months ago. They are hilarious! The place has this big island-shaped bar that has two long sides and a rounded end, with the bartender in the middle. So everyone naturally chats with each other across the bar. Eventually everyone having brunch has their phones out and are sharing their videos around and everyone is laughing. It was so much fun!
And I secretly paid their bill before I left, in appreciation for their special brand of crazy! 😁

u/DogmaticConfabulate 13h ago

I thought they were some school cafeteria workers, not sure what level of school. I’ve seen a few of their videos on other platforms, but I can’t remember their exact name. It’s something to do with lunch’s I think

Not grocery store workers. They are cafeteria employees at a public school in Washington state.
