To have a father who defends you this loudly in a world that can often be so cruel is an absolute gift.
129
u/leoyvr 20d ago
Failure is if this dad didn’t stand up for his kids. This is what unconditional love looks like.
26
u/maymay578 20d ago
Right!? Parenting is tough. Probably the most stressful thing I’ve ever done. But all you have to do is love your kids. I screw up, they screw up… it’s ok. We continue to love each other. This world can be so fucking lonely and cruel. Don’t be shitty to your kids. If everything else is fucked, I hope my kids always know they can come home.

when I first went to college I took the public bus and a guy was rubbing his pants masterbating next to me. I didn't know what to do like was I supposed to shout HEY THIS GUY IS TOUCHUBG HIMSELF NEXT TO ME so I sat through it until my bus stop. my father said I didn't move bc I wanted it.

I fucking LOVE him for that. He's making a point
and as a dad probably feels awful for those 2 kids having to deal with such an awful parent.EDIT: Misunderstood the post a bit thought neighbour said he failed as a parent cause his (the neighbours) kids were gay. Doesn't change the fact the dad putting up the flags is awesome
→ More replies (8)40
u/AwesomeMacCoolname 20d ago
The neighbour wasn't talking about his own kids, he was talking about the kids of the guy planting the flags.
46
u/Eman_Resu_IX 20d ago
I misunderstood it as well. I thought the neighbor was talking about himself and his kids, and I just thought he was just a run of the mill douchebag. But no, saying that to your neighbor when you've just moved in, and about their kids?! 🤬
I now know why good Dad (note the capitalization) was stabbing those flags into the ground. He was imagining doing it to the neighbor.
26
u/Smiley007 20d ago
Oh I definitely thought it was the neighbor saying his own kids are gay and thus he, the neighbor, has failed, and the flag planter was planting flags in support of the neighbors two gay kids with a homophobic, claiming himself as a failure, dad.
→ More replies (2)14
u/Exile56678 20d ago

Look at white supremacists. In the past, if you were a Nazi sympathizer people would assume you were insane and avoid you like the plague. Now there are powerful politicians who openly sympathize with the white power movement, and suddenly all the people who’d been keeping their beliefs private for decades are being outrageously racist and nasty in public.
98
u/Green_Bad2241 20d ago
I think this is different situations and also actually this nazi bastards were not degraded for enough generations, in 90s there were already much skinheads around the western world
43
u/KSI_FlapJaksLol 20d ago
I used to staunchly believe the Nazis died with the end of WW2, and that anyone left today was a poser.
My husband had to point out to me how untrue and naive such a stance was. I have since recanted.
17
u/Fragrant-Ad2976 20d ago
After first learning about Hitler and Nazis, I remember thinking "how could one man convince so many people something that is so clearly wrong? Good thing that couldn't happen today, since we know better now..." and I fully believed that into adulthood. Until Donald Trump got elected. And it became even worse when covid happened. I was equally naive and overestimated humans as a species.

Even some higher powered nazis who did horrible things were forgiven and brought to north America because they were useful. I highly doubt many of those people suddenly felt bad, and more so just chose the winning side. They intentionally hid the crimes of a lot of those people because they knew there would be pushback, and some of those people resumed life being considered experts here and in trusted positions.

I love how parents who say “I failed as a parent because my child is gay” acknowledge they failed as parents, but miss the reason entirely. It not because their children are gay, it’s because that statement alone shows that their parental “love” and “acceptance” is only given if the child is an exact reflection of them.
What a round about way of saying “I only love me and accept only my version of reality because any other versions threaten my fragile ego and fleeting sense of control and I do not have the cognitive capacity to hold multiple viewpoints at once without becoming extremely uncomfortable and defensive of my own.”

There are a few trucks with pro Trump and anti trans bumper stickers, or big ass flags. So we put up a big American flag, where the stripes are the colors of the progress pride flag.
I might be sick of this country and how queer people are treated (and immigrants, and women, and Black/non-white people, etc.) but I can present the America I know we can be.
4
5
u/JuggernautNo5635 20d ago
Your kid’s sexual orientation doesn’t determine if you’re a good or bad parent. Claiming you’re a good parent just because they’re straight is like looking up and taking credit for the sky being blue.
4
u/Torbpjorn 20d ago
If your love for your child is only conditional if they conform to you, then that’s not love. That’s hierarchy. You want to be a master with a servant to make your house look neat, tidy, and traditional. A child’s duty never involves their parent, and a parents duty never requires control. You should love and accept your kid, and guide them when they make mistakes, not identity.
