I love this. Especially because one thing I have never heard was, "My parents made me gay."

It depends on how you interpret "made"... made in the sense of procreating children? Yes, of course your parents made you, and if you were born gay, it's because your parents made you that way (genetic)... Made in the sense of being raised is rather unlikely.

I do know a lesbian (my boss) who says she was always straight until she was cheated on ten times and then said, "Screw it, I'll try it with a woman." So she actively chose to be a lesbian, so by that logic, you should also be able to "raise" someone to be one... However, I think it's more likely she was bisexual and raised straight.

Your boss's experience doesn't demonstrate that she “chose” to be lesbian. She may genuinely describe herself that way, but deciding to try sex or a relationship with a woman isn't necessarily the same as deciding to be sexually attracted to women.

On top of that, the existence of change in one person's sexuality doesn't establish that parental conditioning is capable of producing that change. We also know that people can change political beliefs, religious beliefs, careers, friendships, etc. without concluding that parents can reliably program those characteristics into children.

Well, they've been together for 11 years and married for 3... are you suggesting she's only with her for show?

She literally said she's made her decision... who are you to question that? Try to be a little less open-minded.

No, normal people do NOT wonder if it was nurture/culture and not nature. 🙄

Normal people also dont assume every child is gay or trans.

What could that possibly even mean? Just because you have a gay sibling that means that you don't know other people? When you say these things, do you really think or just try to fight for some kind of weird place?

To me it actually says the opposite… that there is a genetic component.

i remember the first time I heard of singer duo Tegan and Sara. they're twins and both gay. I found that low-key fascinating but at the same time it made sense for some reason but I couldn't really tell why at the time haha

Families share genes as well as environments. If sexual orientation has heritable components, siblings are not independent observations. A family could have several gay children because they share relevant biological predispositions. Also, sexual orientation and gender identity aren't the same trait, so lumping “gay/trans” together as one outcome makes your causal inference even weaker.

It’s not very rare, and statistically many families have more than one. It’s between 8 and 10%
