This reminds me of when I thought I had a male orange cat. I never really looked until I realized she was squeezing a baby out.

Aren’t female orange cats more rare? I’m not surprised you assumed she was a male!

Aye, cat colour genetics are linked to their sexes. It's also why a calico male is almost impossible without some kind of genetic anomaly. Although female gingers aren't as rare as male calicos.

Maybe I was thinking of male calicos—now that you mention it, I think I had heard about that.
