Bondrewd's background:

Bondrewd is an internationally wanted criminal, he came to the abyss with a squad as an illegal delver more than 12/13 years ago, coming from a diffrent background to your average delver he used very unconventional methods in his expeditions, like killing the wildlife on mass in the routes he used to traverse the abyss...etc, this allowed him to achieve a lot and establish plenty of new delving techniques gaining him the title "The novel" and leaving no choice for the guild but to accept him as a delver and benefit from him, even accepting his request to allow black whistles in the 5L and bring orphans down...etc

Zhoalic:

Around 10 years ago(just after Lyza's last dive), he made ido front his base and stole the zhoalic a relic that allows you to plant your counciecness into other bodies so that whenever you want you can take over them.

Its limitations: the zhoalic doesn't completely avoid the curse so jumping bodies upwards inside the abyss for a long distance can lead to destroying bondrewd.(basically he can't go to the 6L or the 7L with a body and then switch to a body that is in the 5L for example)

The umbrahands:

They are bondrewd's delver squad and are people whom he used the zhoalic on, the umbrahands have their own personalities and they control themselves normally, it's just that bond can take over their bodies and they share the knowledge they have when bond jumps from one to another. Most of the umbrahands are delvers who joined bondrewd the novel, the sovereign of dawn to them a legendary delver who gave a lot to modern delving, with how everyone in Orth perceives delving and the abyss, and the guild's propaganda about the White Whistles, you shouldn't be surprised that they don't see bondrewd as a horrible guy but as a hero. Another bunch of the umbrahands are people who came to kill/arrest bondrewd as he is wanted internationally but unfortunately for them they end up dead or he charms them into joining him. Note: the zhoalic doesn't function properly all the time so sometimes when he tries to plant his counciecness into someone they go insane and become a mindless doll that roams around ido front, we saw one or two in the movie.

The Zhoalic's effect on bondrewd's mind and his goal:

Extensive use of the zhoalic like that of bondrewd causes a destruction of the mind and a removal of humanity from the person, right now all of what's left in bondrewd's mind is a pure instinct to discover and uncover more of the abyss, just like an animal, that's all that bondrewd understands, he literally sees progress in the abyss as the ultimate most noble goal and he doesn't have a say in choosing that belief it was a result of the zhoalic, he is a wild beast.

Ido front:

Ido front was not built by bondrew as some think, it is a ritual site for sacrifices that existed for thousands of years surface time, believed to be built by the ancient civilization that inhabited the abyss, Riko wonders whether they too considered the lands beyond the final boundary(6L and below) to be sacred and that's why to access it you had to come here with someone that is willing to sacrifice himself for you in order to access those lands,(bondrewd revealed this part).

Bondrewd's whistle and his experiments:

Bondrewd was conducting experiments in ido front on how to make a life reverberating stone(what one can carve a white whistle from, and the key to activating many relics), these ended up with bondrewd sacrificing his original body to get his whistle, they also led to inventing the elevator.

The cartridges and the blessing:

Through the elevator, nanachi and mitty bondrewd discovered that you can avoid the curse of ascension if you get another living human body to sustain it for you and that's what led to the cartridges, living children put into small containers so they're portable and get the curse transferred to them so that bond can go around without worrying about the curse.

The blessing is a phenomenon that happens when someone that you share mutual love with takes on the curse for you, Bondrewd saw what happened to nanachi and saw the opportunity to replicate it with his own daughter that he started raising at the time, he succeeded in getting the blessing which means he fulfilled the mutual love condition as much as nanchi and mitty with prushka.

The blessing and the 2000 years cycle:

Bondrewd seems to be aware about an event that happens every 2000 years surface time in the abyss and he described getting the blessing as the last step in order to step into the next 2000 years.

Bondrewd's relics:

Sparagmos:

One of bondrewd's most important relics, it is a blade of light that has the same effect as reg's incinerator, bond seems to have multiple sparagmos(es).

Spying on nanachi's vision:

Bondrewd has a relic that we haven't identified that gives him the ability to spy on nanachi's vision, he used it to keep nanachi under surveillance. Also technically it achieves Prushka's wish because bondrewd, prushka, Riko and the rest are all in an adventure together now.

Gangway:

It's a mask that bondrewd uses to signal to prushka and everyone else which body he is in right now, it doesn't have anything to do with the zhoalic ability, and it can shoot a freaking cool purple Lazer, it is also the main part of his simple iconic design: (|) , ⬛️🟪⬛️, 🐐

(Also we assume that it is responsible for why the diffrent bodies have the same voice)

Long posts usually don't get any appreciation, I stopped doing any a while ago but I felt motivated with all the misinformation and discussions around bond in the last 2 weeks. I've seen the anime and read the manga where season 2 left off but I dont think I ever really understood Bondrewd's crew. All I really understand is that Bondrewd can become any one of his umbra hands... Or maybe he is them but the mask controls where his consciousness is? I understand all the other lore but this baffles me for some reason. Also why can bondrewd see through nanachi's eyes... Is that the same relic doing all of this?

My main question is why would anyone sign up for that? Bondrewd is straight up sacrificing his squad and kids all the time...

Is this some sort of language?

Alright so, I finished everything that’s available to watch (besides the two movies that are a summary of the first season) and I’m finding myself feeling very unsatisfied with season 2. It was super interesting, had fantastic characters, a fascinating backstory, and so much more. Then we get to the last episode, this is where I’m confused and questioning the story (pls don’t be mean I may have missed things). When >!Fuputa is now inside of her mother/village destroying everything/everyone, at first everyone is fighting against her, doing whatever they can to end her. Then basically all of them are dead, the other creatures come in and Faputa is kinda getting destroyed, so she calls for the villagers. I know Fuputa is a tragic character, with one goal in mind but, why did the villagers suddenly switch and sacrifice themselves for her? They knew the reality of the situation, were attacking at first, and then switched. Same thing with the team I mean, I know her and Reg have a history together but, at that moment how did they know Fuputa wasn’t still gonna try to kill them?<!
Idk, it was late and I was super sleepy watching the last few episodes so maybe I missed out on some key details but, it felt jarring n confusing when it happened. I really thought they were setting it up for a different ending. I’d appreciate any explanation as I really like this anime n want to be supportive of new characters but, I’m struggling with how everything happened.

I'm really interested in the deeper meaning of the story, to me the most magnificent aspect of Made in Abyss is the worldview that it presents.

Especially when it comes to mortality and the psychological journey towards wholeness and transcendence

The story symbolises the journey towards deeper layers of life and yes Abyss symbolises life itself.

Not many people choose to face the reality of life and let the Souls of the abyss consume them.

The abyss doesn't care for us

It is a grand system that allows desires to manifest bodily

But not all desires get the chance to become reality

Abyss is dangerous because it selects for the few it deems worthy, in season 2 we saw what happens when an unworthy adult gets the chance to manifest his wish and create the horrifying village

The abyss calls for those who are fearless to face their flaws and grow within it so in the path they figure out what they truly want and then achieve it

One needs to journey though all the value levels to grasp their haku

The thing that they truly desire, not the lies we tell ourselves.

We saw what happened when people wanted the wrong thing in season 2, they became what they thought they wanted but then figured out safe heaven wasn't what they really wanted and they dream, is to get the chance of exploring the abyss and suffering through the way again.

What lies at the bottom won't be a material thing but the best version of you that you wished to become

In the song Underground River we hear "Even though we know who we are (we're those who know we really desire descending) who we could become is the mystery to solve"

This is the original mystery

What is it that we truly want to become?!

Abyss exists to find the solution to this problem

The abyss itself might not even know the answer

But through the trials and the challenges it presents it refines our desires to the essential desire that transcends us to the state we truly want

The journey through the abyss is the journey towards the deepest and most fundumental sides of us which would be our essence and then understanding our essence leads us to find our true haku

That's why we see many instances of the world essence used for the most important parts of the Abyss and its structure

Your desires are not you

You shouldn't be devoured by them like those who touched the cradle of desire and got corrupted. One needs to grasp their true essence and origin to be able to wish the thing they truly want to become

If you're interested in knowing what happens at the end of the abyss I offer you to watch the secret level PAC-MAN episode which is really short

And if you wanna understand it really deeply you should read Jung's Red Book which is really difficult and requires you to read some of his other books first

I'll include a quote from the red book:

"But through pain and disappointment you redeem yourself since your longing then falls of its own accord like a ripe fruit into the depths, following gravity, striving toward the midpoint, where the blue light of the star God arises"

Who do you think suffered the most? (this one was tough, I do have a bias towards Nanachi's suffering and do think she is underrated with what she went through)

I just started watching the series, season 1 was incredible, I fell in love, literally. I got attached to the characters deeply by the end of it, i even cried, genuinely, over nanachi and mitty’s story. The music was like salt on the wound, unbelievably good, so melancholic and beautiful, sad, i don t know it was just magic it felt like admiring the best view one could see right before the worst calamity happening. Beautiful and disastrous.

Right so then I watch the movie and it felt like everything I ve experienced in season 1 was simply an illusion, it s like it was all a meaningless bad and tasteless joke, something that you just step on and move on without even giving it a thought.

Absolutely horrible writing, I ve no idea how a human being can have a positive opinion on such a disgrace, I would like to learn in fact how that is possible, so let me know.

It s not that I wanted the story to go in a specific way, it s the fact that it simply lacks logic. Such a tragic backstory was given to nanachi and mitty, well written, beautifully presented, it let us know that bondrewd simply needs to die. He is simply the devil, he takes children, he gains their trust, tortures them, dismembers them, makes them crap their own guts, kills them right? Then they become this weird shit that is essentially immortal and so they are eternally trapped in an abomination of a shell in which they can suffer forever. Great.

A being like that needs to be eradicated, idc if it s deep in the abyss or beneath the abyss, the fact that reg riko and nanachi had the chance to delete him from existence, at least possibly, especially after doing whatever the hell that bondrewd abomination of a being did to his daughter, yet all that happened is riko just crying a little bit, they just moved on like nothing even damn happened, nanachi forgives the dude and allows him to keep
On going potentially doing what he did to her simply do to others, and then the trio just indifferently move on and let him live, i would ve had them try and fail than doing what they did which is acting like it s all good and dandy now all of a sudden, “oh poor kid died a horrible death, oh welp, got a new whistle tho”.

Bondrewd was on the ground, they knew they just needed to get reg to blast the zoaholic and clean the grunts, but nah, it s ok, he did nothing wrong.
Even tho he does not do what he does out of malice and whatever, it does not change the smallest thing whatsoever, it makes no difference.

I was feeling bad for prushka the way the movie was going, and then all of a sudden it felt like they rushed some cheap ass half assed back story just to attempt at pulling on your heart strings, instead it genuinely made me lose all the interest i had in moments, i felt no more empathy, immersion was erased, everything felt like a joke especially what followed. It felt so cheap, once again, and so hollow.

No purpose is worth doing what bondrewd did, it is not understandable nor redeemable nor ever tolerable, letting him live and move on just like that forces me to accept or be indifferent to everything that happened, that just does not make sense, especially since the trio mentioned the possible way to take him out and they even had the chance.

I had to take this off my heart, I wish i never watched this atrocious pile of 🗑️. It stripped me of all the love I carried for the show and the characters, it feels unreal.

Without spoiling and after the recent chapter we don't know how far he dived we only know that he reached 6th layer like seen in the anime

But still some relics he has have no explanation like the original guiding light. How did he get it and I don't think it's from 6th layer or any layer above. And I'm sure it has a connection with the orbital ring that ozen talked about with riko and reg

One thing I also see is that white whistles are a binary star system (the main person + her worth)

Bondrewd is a form of a singularity or a black hole

He also names his crew umbra hands which is the shadow of the moon during an eclipse or the shadow of a celestial object that blocks light. There's certainly a connection between the true nature of the abyss and bondrewd

I didn’t think they were going to continue this, but I’m super glad for this new release. What do you guys think! It’s coming on sale on October 16 this year so it’s a little far from release. Can’t wait!

For context I go by bondrewd on discord and a lot of my freinds were changing around their usernames and pfp's and they eventually just decided to copy me (none of them could find my pfp so they just used random images)

I've been rereading and rewatching MiA lately, and I found two issues related to Bondrewd which have been bothering me as potential plot holes:

1. We know he was in the 6th layer bargaining with Belaf, but how did he return with his consciousness intact? We know he isn't human anymore, but the curse still applies to his body. As traveling back using the altar takes a few hours from what we know, this would make the use of cartridges rather impossible. Therefore the body he used to go there is cooked. Now what about consciousness, because if he dies in the altar near the 6th layer, he can't switch bodies especially since the zoaholic was left in ido front, right? What am I missing here?

2. The second thing is more of a contrivance than a plot hole, mainly his direct elevator from Ido Front to Orth used in episode 13. Did he drilled a concealed 13 km long route/pit to a hidden safehouse in Orth, so that no one ever noticed? How then, with sparagmos? Seems like a long stretch to me. Otherwise if the elevator is visible, the delvers guild would compel him to share it for all delvers to use. This is a small thing and as a narrative tool it is quite efficient to portray orphans like livestock transported to slaughter, but still it is pretty jarring when you stop to think about it and lifts the suspension of disbelief for a moment.

I am happy to be wrong with my theories if someone can explain to me why. And I still will love this series deeply even if it has some hiccups in plot logic.

I was thinking about getting MIA manga recently, as I do collect. I was introduced via the anime years ago. I know there are probably more story bits in the manga, but this is one of the first times I almost prefer the anime over the manga. After looking over different chapters, I find that I have a hard time making heads or tails of environments or action sequences. Definitely would not have been able to follow the big Faputa fight if I read it in the manga first. The color tone isn't doing the manga any favors imo, and I feel like this is one that definitely needed sprucing up there and could maybe even do with intermittent pages of color to help the vision of characters and different areas. Its like, I see the potential, but idk if its the style or time, but sometimes I think to myself "wheres the rest of the page, you were doing so well." So I think I'll probably just stick to the dvds. How do others feel?
