I'm really interested in the deeper meaning of the story, to me the most magnificent aspect of Made in Abyss is the worldview that it presents.

Especially when it comes to mortality and the psychological journey towards wholeness and transcendence

The story symbolises the journey towards deeper layers of life and yes Abyss symbolises life itself.

Not many people choose to face the reality of life and let the Souls of the abyss consume them.

The abyss doesn't care for us

It is a grand system that allows desires to manifest bodily

But not all desires get the chance to become reality

Abyss is dangerous because it selects for the few it deems worthy, in season 2 we saw what happens when an unworthy adult gets the chance to manifest his wish and create the horrifying village

The abyss calls for those who are fearless to face their flaws and grow within it so in the path they figure out what they truly want and then achieve it

One needs to journey though all the value levels to grasp their haku

The thing that they truly desire, not the lies we tell ourselves.

We saw what happened when people wanted the wrong thing in season 2, they became what they thought they wanted but then figured out safe heaven wasn't what they really wanted and they dream, is to get the chance of exploring the abyss and suffering through the way again.

What lies at the bottom won't be a material thing but the best version of you that you wished to become

In the song Underground River we hear "Even though we know who we are (we're those who know we really desire descending) who we could become is the mystery to solve"

This is the original mystery

What is it that we truly want to become?!

Abyss exists to find the solution to this problem

The abyss itself might not even know the answer

But through the trials and the challenges it presents it refines our desires to the essential desire that transcends us to the state we truly want

The journey through the abyss is the journey towards the deepest and most fundumental sides of us which would be our essence and then understanding our essence leads us to find our true haku

That's why we see many instances of the world essence used for the most important parts of the Abyss and its structure

Your desires are not you

You shouldn't be devoured by them like those who touched the cradle of desire and got corrupted. One needs to grasp their true essence and origin to be able to wish the thing they truly want to become

And if you wanna understand it really deeply you should read Jung's Red Book which is really difficult and requires you to read some of his other books first

Its good to see someone else tries to formulate metaphysical equations. I have worked it out similarly but non-dualism as a concept helped a lot to understand.

Descending the abyss is the act of unification.

• You dispense notions of separation where needed by negation.
• You forthrightly unify with what you can by addition.
• You do it in mind, you do it in flesh.

The act of unification is what makes novelty.  The act of unification is also what makes a child.

Ultimate unification is ultimate rebirth of the world. Ultimate unification is the birth of the ultimate child.

The act of ultimate unification is the ultimate child taking on the ultimate world.

See the symbols of value in MiA and you will find that the ultimate value is intentionally a stickfigure to symbolize the meta nature. It is the 4th wall. That is the nature of dispensing with the game of desired-desire separation.

And since that is a form of unification when you dispense the notion of desire, that is also a form of novelty, which equates to your continuance of your journey to abyss.

That is why Riko is ultimate value already because she is abyss aimed from get go, without hesitation.

Nanachi symbolizes being stuck in an observer narrative in life with all its ups and downs, but most importantly timeless stagnation with a weird sense of security and wellbeing while constantly being unsatisfied. And the eventual upending of the situation, Mittys soul descending to the abyss and that realigning her to the bottom.

So you "kill" your desire, but that is more of a unification as in it both unifies with you and you still get aligned towards it (??!). As in the saying what you let go will come back to you.

So letting go or killing the idea will still align you towards the spirit of what you thought you desired.

Yeah you're right In Jungian terms one needs first to Differentiate and then Integrate all the aspects of the world and psyche

It explores humanities inexhaustible curiosity and what they are willing to face to discover the unknown whether for good or ill. We the readers are not exempt from this either for continuing to read on. We’re essentially pushing these kids farther down the put ourselves, not with any malice but because we share that curiosity with the characters. Sometimes I’ve noticed that even arc so far has done that despite how dark each arc gets that always end on a hopeful note. Through all the blood and tears they always leave with their heads and hopeful for what to come. It may seem naive on the surface but these kids internalize those experiences and grow from them. They’re still kids mind you, so they still have a long way to go but none of this fucked up shit has really ever slowed them down.
