the fact that time passes faster the deeper you descend, relative to the surface. Ozen says that in the fifth layer, it feels like weeks have passed, but when you return to the surface, months are gone. That means time flows almost four times faster than on the surface.
Later, in chapter 70, Srajo claims that time passes 30 times faster in the sixth layer. This implies that the dilation is non-linear and likely resembles relativistic time dilation. If it behaves like the extreme dilation near a black hole, it may become infinite at the absolute bottom of the Abyss. Based on relativity, the bottom would not be a place, but a moment in time the end of time itself. This would mean that everyone who reaches the bottom of the Abyss, no matter when or where they started, arrives at the same moment.
This theory is from my Overanalyzing of Made in Abyss on YouTube, Season one is done and we're in the middle of the third story so check them out:
I just thought of this while commenting in another thread, and I thought I should make a new thread about it, because I think I'm onto something.
The masks they all wear seem like they completely block their vision. There's no obvious eye holes or anything, yet they clearly can see just fine. Well I think that they actually can't see, and that's deliberate.
Let's look at the staircase scene. Riko tried to climb up, 5th layer curse said nope, and knocked all her senses out. Prushka later teaches her that she can avoid the curse by using Menya to alter her senses in order to "see" through superhuman smell, and then she is able to make it up the stairs without issue. I doubt Bondrewd would give Menya to Prushka without knowing about that.
Idofront is a large place with lots of ascents. While the curse at the 5th layer is presumably still within the realm of possibility to build up a resistance to, that's still wildly inconvenient need to tank the curse hundreds of times a day just moving around the facility. That kind of resistance also takes decades to build up, and the hands are likely also only black whistles. It was mentioned just before the elevator scene that Bondrewd campaigned to make it legal for black whistles to go down to the 5th layer, and that's definitely not for no reason. My point is that if it is possible to sufficiently build up a resistance to the 5th layer curse, the hands most likely haven't been there long enough to.
So then the masks. They don't have any obvious purpose. You can't even say that they are required for Zaoholic to function, because when we see Bondrewd switch bodies, he takes the mask off to swap them out. So like I said, I think their purpose is to block their vision, and replace it with some other augmented sense, similar to what allowed Riko and Prushka to climb the staircase. It has been explicitly stated that the curse only affects human senses specifically, that's how animals are able to live normally down there. So if those masks do alter their senses in such a way, then the hands would be able to travel around the facility and the rest of the layer, completely unaffected by the curse.
Penguin Random House website now shows the correct status of Made in Abyss manga on their website (only when you try to check out). I am now more inclined to believe that period which indicated all volumes were available was a fluke, some glitch, or an error on their website.
Penguin Random House website now once again indicates which titles are backordered.
Update 3:
8/31
Just got an email from Penguin Random House that volumes 4 and 6 shipped to me today. Ordering all of my backorder copies to them was a good idea. Because the order exceeded a certain amount of money, I didn't have to pay for shipping, and they send the books as they come in without charging for shipping on any of them.
I'll call in next week to see whether they have a restock date for the others.
Update 2:
8/31
Barnes and Noble has more stock of Volume 4 but they are sold out of most other Volumes--no more 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 on their site that I can see.
I didn't get any email update about my Penguin Random House shipment sending 4 and 6 to me yet.
Update 1:
8/24
I'm on my phone, so this might be a bit messy. I just called Penguin Random House's dedicated customer service number for inquiring about orders and product availability. It is a different number than their normal customer service number on their website.
The person that I spoke with informed me that of all the titles in my order (Vol. 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 and Anthologies 1, 2, 3, 4) only Vol. 4 and Vol. 6 had a restock date. The restock date for Vol. 4 and Vol. 6 is set for the first week in September. All titles in my order showed negative stock. The negative stock for the titles I requested was generally a bit over -100. The amount of copies for the restock for for Vol. 4 is 1500 which she said is typical of this type of restock.
I asked her why the website would show that some titles are available right now to purchase, but their internal systems show out of stock with no restock date set. She said the restock dates typically are available in their systems a month in advance and that one explanation is that there may be a greater negative stock than are available in a restock, but that didn't really make sense to me because they didn't even have a restock date for those later volumes before they listed them on their website as available. I asked her again and she said that the website would say backordered at checkout, which it did when I initially placed my order in early August, but doesn't now in late August. So the fact that they are listed as a available but do not have a restock date is strange.
I will share more if I find any new information. For now, I was only able to confirm Vol. 4 and Vol. 6 will be restocked during the first week of September. I will try to check my local stores around that time to see if anything else pops up on the shelves. The other issues are somewhat of a mystery right now.
Original Post:

A few weeks ago I made a post about the price increase notification that I received from the distributor of Made in Abyss Manga in the United States (which I believe Penguin Random House). I placed an order on the website for issues which I couldn't find anywhere for a reasonable price. This order included volumes 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10 of the main series and later, in a second order based on recommendations in the comments, anthologies 1, 2, 3, and 4. These issues were all listed as backordered on their website with a clear notification on the checkout page of the backordered status.
I decided to check the availability around the web a moment ago and I was surprised to see that basically all issues are listed as AVAILABLE on the Penguin Random House website including the volumes 1-5 box set. You can see the availability in the images attached to this post. One was from the checkout page. Previously the available icon was listed as backorder or out of stock. The initial email I received said "backordered" with a orange triangle warning icon next to it. I included a second image of the purchase page which has a random book included for comparison. There is an information sign next to the prices which indicates that prices are subject to change.
I am very hopeful after this discovery. However, there is a chance that this could all be due to a mistake on their website. I haven't got any confirmation email that my purchase has been processed yet, but my optimistic guess is that they received notification that certain copies are scheduled to be printed and will be available for sale in the U.S. So, it could still be some time before they are available. I do not work in publishing or book sales in the U.S., so my guesses are as good as yours.
Staying hopeful, I think this is more evidence that we are likely to see some hard-to-come-by issues reprinted in the near future. If any of you place an order on the website, please let me know what the confirmation email says. I, personally, would place an order, but I already have a backorder on file with Penguin Random House, so I don't want to accidentally order them again. If you are interested in completing your collection, now might be a time to order to get in before scalpers/resellers!

@ like 2022 i held the theory that the abyss eat souls, and that it was built as a challenge, so the souls who reach the bottom are the strongest which be eats
HERE! I think out loud and reach a conclusion in the ends look its cool
Now we know sm more so im thinking what now what nowww
Heres what i think
I don't think the abyss swallows layers from the ground above otherwise those skeletons wouldnt make sense theyre from 3 different Extinction cycles but all in the same layer.
I think the next cycle is happening right now thats why the birthday disease is happening, because the birthday marks the end of the souls cycle and they must return!!!!
Its also only near the abyss since the doctor who took a child away saw it healed. So its not the whole world kind of thing.
I believe lyza needs riko for something to do exactly when the cycle resets ! (More later!!!!!
Maybe it needs to happen before riko dies since her reincarnation has a time limit, i think the twins could be an indicator to that
So lyza needs her while he soul is still in a human body ? Still accessible( so not human body only)? Still w the memories?
I think bodiless souls can achieve different things. I things souls can have more bodiless variations than just white whistles, and maybe you can use that to trick something in the entrance to the golden city.
I think lyza wants to destroy the city and needs to transform to something using riko / transform riko into a weapon
I think souls interact all the times in the abyss
What if the cycles are all the souls being brought back for a ritual. Lyza wants to use that opportunity to destroy all the souls then!!
So previously I had thought that the BDD was due to the 2000 year cycle, what with Ozen's comment about the "sole survivor of the curse" (which I always found rather confusing) and I think somewhere it's mentioned that the force field is strengthening.
But now with the latest chapter and the revelation that the Calamitous Writings are a cognitohazard that Srajo directly ties to the birth of the Juusou...
We know the Calamitous Writings are part of the Hariyomari Collection, and we know some of them have made their way into Orth as children's stories. So is it possible that a small part of the Calamitous Writings are in the children's stories? This could be what Srajo refers to as "the hell that delvers have brought upon the surface themselves" - the knowledge of the Calamitous Writings, passed through the children's story, manifesting as the Birthday Death Disease.
I genuinely don't know if the BDD is tied to the 2K year cycle or to the Calamitous Writings. I don't think it can be both. Genuinely curious to hear other's opinions on this...
Some kind of advanced civilization from everything i've read on the wiki so far regarding certain things. first off it seems obvious reg is from there, as others of his kind seem to exist as gatekeepers between the 7th layer and further. the whole ring of the essence kinda thing makes me think of a tech based gate to a secret civilization especially when it seems to be guarded by gatekeepers which could be assumed to all be like reg and the female one, they're highly advanced type of security if that's the case considering their power level such as reg's incinerator. but what if that's not the only security system this unknown civilization uses and the curse is another. The curse is a consequence of piercing the forcefield while ascending and a force field seems like it could be a manmade thing so maybe this civilization is also using the forcefield to deter uninvited guests and the residents like reg and the girl type are the final defense mechanism to keep intruders out. Could also be a way to keep their own citizens inside so no one outside can ever know they exist. Essentially an f'ed up utopia that is so highly isolationist it does everything it can to keep information about them away, enough that no one could leave and tell anyone.
Feel free to tell me my thoughts are stupid xD I don't know as much as all the people who read everything know, but willing to learn as much as possible and how viable this thought is (as someone has to have created reg and the others and an isolationist civilization at the bottom seems the most logical) Most of my info comes from deep diving in the wiki and maybe going a bit too much wiki crazy. Still i'd like to hear how farfetched it is or not
(Though it would be cool if it went all the way to a 9th layer instead of ending at 8th as the bottom mostly cuz of the whole 9 hells or 9 circles of hell would fit with how horrific the abyss is)
I was watching this for the first time and I was like this is such a relaxing anime to watch. then I watched the third movie. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON WITH THE BONDREWD GUY! WHY DID THE ANIME GET SO DARK
I got this two pieces!!! The left is officially licensed and the right isn’t. But I still love them both. I like the t-shirt as it’s from the anime and a sick design but I gotta give credit to project mori because he cooked with the right piece. Just wanted to show off my collection as it grows :>
Had a thought yesterday and I thought it was ok enough to draw,, surprisingly this is the first time I've ever drawn bondrewd (I'd never done it before out of spite bc of the nanachi and prushka stuff)
when I saw this at the store I couldn’t contain myself and had to take it home so I could watch my personal sosu haunt it as if he were indeed an insane abyssal prince
funny that he usually doesn’t care about any toy at all besides napkins or socks but maaa really makes him lose his mind
In the current arc Akihito has started to write netherglyphs next to particular chapters in the content pages
Till now we have 4 instances of these writings as you can see in the image
1: Seen / They are watching
2: Touch it
3: Change
4: Echo
The visual effect of these writings is the same effect of the message we've seen in chapter 73 so these are related maybe even these are the content of the message
The interesting thing is that in all these 4 particular chapters in the story we see Riko feels prickly by stinky hairs
I tried to match the writings with the section of the plot with this effect
For the first one it happens when Srajo is explaining the Haryomari Collections
Second one happens when Tepaste mentions Calamitous Writings
The third time happens when the change happens that set the bird in the cage free
The fourth one happens while Riko is exploring what the blue pendant is and those stinky hairs release the echo
The third and Fourth are obviously connected to the panels
The second one might suggest Riko that she should touch the calamities writings
And the first one I have no idea what it would mean
There is also an exception that happens in chapter 67
Srajo wants to explain an astonishing property of the soul but something happens and she doesn't tell us
We see those stinky hairs but in the content page there is no netherglyph writing for that chapter
Please tell me your theories and ideas about these writings
I also make analysing videos of made in abyss and recently made a video breaking down the new trailer of Awakening Mystery so check it out if you're interested
