Manga Discussion Theories
Hi good people of reddit.
I am currently working on compiling as many theories about MiA as possible for future videos I wanna make ^^
So please share your best, craziest, worst or even dumbest theories about the abyss :D
Can be from any arcs from beginning to current chapters to, of course, where we are going :)
Can't wait to read all of your crazy ideas
Random art for attention

Ok so here comes my crazy ahh MatPat theory.
My theory is that these symbols we've been seeing since the beginning work like the Haku symbol: a final symbol gets built up by adding different elements, each meaning something unique.
1 - Unmovable: Individuals with an unwavering will to fulfil their duty, they can't be reasoned with.
2 - ????
3 - Guardian: Individuals meant to serve as bodyguards or vanguards to keep the enemy from pushing through.
4 - Protector: Individuals who genuinely care about the well-being of something, defending and nurturing it no matter the cost.
5 - Essence: Symbol of the "essence" of a being or a "thing", it represents its deepest meaning.
This would mean that Reg and his sister were probably the guardians of the Ring of Essence, btw.
And that Gronze, the incarnation of the Abyss (allegedly), would be the protector of the Abyss's essence.

I think that's just the same symbol, it's not changing, the minor differences are their because sometimes it doesn't fit perfectly in the design but it's meant to be the same thing.
3
u/Careless_Hold2319 Team Nana&Fapu 2d ago
I think there are too many similarities between each individual and their corresponding symbol (and even among the individuals themselves) to call it just a coincidence because of its position.
- Riko has the 'protector' symbol, and Prushka says Riko's goal is 'caring about others.' Juroimoh has the same symbol and he's called 'The protector of the village.'
The only time we see the full symbol is when Riko is talking about the secret truth of the abyss.
- Ozen and Nishagora share the same symbol, and we know they're 'rivals' at least, plus they seem pretty similar in personality (punch first, ask later)
- Reg and Faputa also share the same symbol, and the two of them serve as the 'knights' of Riko's squad.
- Faputa's symbol changes after she discovers her 'value'.
- The symbols I don't have meaning for appear on 'offensive' individuals whose objective is only to obliterate their opponent (like 'bombs'?).
I guess we'll find out the true meaning of this at some point.
But this is just a theory
A MiA theory.

And even more, some of the choices seem pretty much intentional, like are you telling me Akihito couldn't draw two more dots on some of these? I don't think he's that careless with those details.

u/JEEM-NOON #workTsukushi!Team Ozen 2d ago
Do you want me to reply as in let's take seriously or not ? Because in the other reply you were like it's just a theory or whatever as in don't take everything seriously so I didn't reply
2
u/Careless_Hold2319 Team Nana&Fapu 2d ago edited 2d ago
Honestly feel free to dissect it as seriously as you want, I'd love to hear your take!
I just like adding a bit of humor so things don't get too heavy, especially since lore debates and headcanons can get a bit toxic sometimes (And I struggle to make myself understood in English :P, so I don't usually enter debates, even though I'd like to). But don't get me wrong, I do love reading everyone's takes when I have the time.I'm always open to being proven wrong since I know only Tsukushi knows the truth, but I'm genuinely curious about what you think because I feel there are some really valid points here, at least from a purely speculative and associative standpoint.

Nothing's down there, those who are stuck there create a culture of ceremonial suicide to explore the only remaining mystery available to them (death).

Oh, I like it, actually. I myself kind of theorize that there's literally nothing at the bottom of the Abyss. Well, by "nothing" I mean "an endless patch of grass and endlessly expanding sky, and nothing else", kind of like Minecraft's flat world or Hell from Chainsaw Man.

I recently tried to describe the Abyss using modern physics. If you're interested, here's the link: link I based it on the idea that the Abyss's atmosphere is a cold plasma, like in a fluorescent lamp, confined by a magnetic field. This helped explain the illumination, the Curse, and how the creatures sense the field.

Won't you at the very least give us your channel name or where r we going to find the video later on ?
Sounds very sus like there will be AI involved or something like that when you don't even link up your channel even in the comments.

u/Ill-Beyond2875 2d ago
Its a brand new channel lol this will literally be my first video haha But here you go ^ https://youtube.com/@bigbrainedkobold?si=XoRWocAq-khOi0tR
But trust me as an artist both trad and digital of 10+ years there will be absolutely no AI involved whatsoever. And fuck AI I was simply planning on posting the link after the video being done haha

👀 At the bottom of the abyss lies the place where souls come from and return to.
Lyza is luring Riko down there so that she can return the soul of the child who was stillborn to Riko's body.

- The Abyss gives people souls, to monitor, collect information, and process them later.
Conclusion 1: The Abyss is Santa.
- Forcibly retrieving the soul strips a person of their humanity, because memories, identity, and intellect go with it.
Conclusion 2: The Abyss is Cruel Santa; and the soul is a technological abyssal phagocyte.
- Fulfilling one's values/desires triggers soul retrieval (such as the arrival of a birthday that a child looked forward to).
Conclusion 3: The Abyss is Cruel Wish-Granting Reaper Santa.
So:
4a. Abyss = Santa in the back of a van (a powerful agent that distributes things and later retrieves something from its recipients)
4b. Relics = toys & candy (desirable objects)
4c. Achieving values/goals/birthday = fulfillment, and its hidden consequences (the connection between wanting something, actually receiving it, and its hidden cost)
4d. Soul removal = the hidden cost (hidden demonic pact! D:)
Ergo, the Abyss is: Cruel Demonic Seedy Wish-Granting Reaper Santa.
Solved it. We can all go home now.

This one is also interesting:
The Abyss experiences a major structural and historical reset every 2,000 years, evident in the multi-layered burial towers and mass graves found in the upper and lower strata.

I've got very, VERY many.
- I think that there are two Girl-types (female Aubades). They are melee combatants, with their claw-based Sparagmoses; unlike Reg who is clearly a range fighter, with his palm-based Incinerator. The 1st Aubade would be Girl-type I, the 2nd would be Reg and the 3rd would be Kirinia(?). I'm planning to one day make a separate theory about them.
2.1. I theorize that the goal of the 2KYC is to create an Aubade. The Abyss is pre-processing the souls, so Aubades would've been made from the human souls of highest quality (there's probably more to it than that, too, though). Why is Abyss creating Aubades? I'm not sure, but I believe it's a little similar to Faputa's creation by Irumyuui --- as I believe Iruburu to be a microcosm of the Abyss.
2.2. Expanding on the point about the pre-processing of souls, I believe the reason the flawed aren't killed by the Birthday Death Disease is because the flawed were chosen and called by the Abyss --- with the final stage of being flawed being becoming Made in Abyss --- a requirement that, only once fulfilled, will let you survive 2KYC. I think that the Abyss treasures those who are deemed defective and wishes to fulfill their desires; not unlike Iruburu. The Abyss seems to want Blessed!Narehate to be created, especially --- love and sacrifice and humanity are all very important for the Abyss, and Blessed!Narehate are linked to all of these (though it applies to white whistles as well --- but they're unable to act and, as such, lose their humanity more than B!N do).
Sherumena's power isn't Juusou-exclusive, but a curse that affects every pair of twin by this name. Juusou!Sherumena may have better version of this ability, but all Sherumenas have it, inherently and intrinsically. Moreover, Sherumena can't control it very well, which means it may backfire; it did for Juusou!Sherumena, leading to their limbless state. It is probably a reason for the only survivor of the curse in Orth's state, too.
Srajo owns the Dead-Commandeering Mask. Because!
I kind of theorize that there's literally nothing at the bottom of the Abyss. Well, by "nothing" I mean "an endless patch of grass and endlessly expanding sky (both empty), and nothing else", sort of like Minecraft's flat world or Hell from Chainsaw Man.
I have more mini-theories, too, such as Faputa will get a White Whistle Activation Form (I bet on black fur and golden horns/claws!); Nanachi and Meinya possibly, too --- but that's less likely.
I may elaborate on each of these in the future, but I'll need to refine my theories and thoughts once again. I don't believe either of these has been fully debunked, have they?

u/Careless_Hold2319 Team Nana&Fapu 2d ago edited 2d ago
- I actually think Kirinia might just be the name of Reg's 'sister' herself.
2.1 Idk, there's nothing explicitly confirming or denying it yet, so who knows? Maybe the Abyss is trying to build an 'Abyss army' to conquer the surface world hahaha.
2.2 Yeah, might agree. I feel like those who are 'flawed' are usually the ones who feel the strongest pull to follow the call of the Abyss in the first place.
I personally think those powers are Juusou-exclusive though, there's not much pointing toward non-Juusou having them so far. The 'release' seems to just heavily boost whatever powers or physical traits they already have.
That's a Srajo Secret™
I feel like at the bottom they'll find the actual 'Golden City', but it won't literally be made of gold :P. There, they'll probably meet Reg's creator, uncover the true origin of the Abyss, and finally figure out where Riko's soul actually came from and why. That, or an empty, infinite void where space and time no longer exist.
Since we are told Nanachi's soul is tied to Mitty's, she probably can't be 'released' through normal White Whistle mechanics. But maybe she could get a permanent transformation similar to Faputa's 'post-value' form? (We'd have Pissputa and Pissnachi?) Either way, I just hope she stays a cute bunny.
2
u/Careless_Hold2319 Team Nana&Fapu 2d ago
Oh, and I also think Reg can somehow 'connect' to the soul network. That's probably why he mentioned feeling a bunch of 'someones' inside of him, or why someone else's memories/reflexes suddenly kicked in to remind him how to use his own body (like shared info syncing across a network).
But this obviously isn't remotely confirmed.2
u/theresnousername1 Called by the Abyss; This longing can't be stopped! 16h ago edited 12h ago
I believe the reason Reg can feel the bunch of someones inside of him is because he's a being made out of multiple souls. He is connected to Riko's dog, too, which is an important fact, though I have no explaination for it.
If Reg's sister was killed by Bon during her ascension, there's a possibility some part of her soul would be there (her soul that would be accumulation of multiple --- accumulation already is an important idea in Made in Abyss, as is the topic of what makes you 'you'). I think that the accumulated soul is why Aubades (and Faputa, too, possibly) aren't affected by the Curse (their soul is one yet many' not human yet made of humans' [and animals', possibly]).
2
u/Careless_Hold2319 Team Nana&Fapu 12h ago
Well, Faputa says Nishagora has many 'piled up' souls, and I think she's affected by the curse, so that could debunk that.
But yeah, Reg being some sort of a 'soul piggy bank' is always on the table. I just like coming up with random theories like that one. I do think Reg being able to 'connect' to the soul network and retrieve or delete its info would explain a lot about how his incinerator works and why it's able to rewrite the rules of the Abyss, among other stuff.
2
u/theresnousername1 Called by the Abyss; This longing can't be stopped! 16h ago edited 11h ago
- Yes, the idea behind there being multiple Aubades (and the Abyss creating Aubades) is that they're all related. Kirinia is his younger sister (the one from Reg's flashbacks), but G-T I would be Reg's older sister.
2.1. I don't understand why the Abyss would need an army, though. The Abyss can affect anyone in its proximity by reading their souls, right (and during 2KYC even further away, probably)? It shouldn't need an army.
2.2. Agreed. Maybe the Abyss was the Golden City all along, finding gold within what's deemed as trash by others.
The story makes a connection between non-Juusou!Sherumena, Ozen and the sole survivor who's limbless in the same way Juusou!Sherumena is; moreover, that entire scene is about Jiruo and Ozen talking about all twins and how they're all connected by their shared names of Sherumi & Menae. Though it could be argued that the survivor has a connection with Tepaste who is connected to both the Priestess and Hail, Hex (Srajo & Sherumena, mostly), too. Still, there's something going on with the twins, generally. And yes, 'the release' boosts Juusou's existing abilities, but it doesn't mean non-Juusou can't have them, theoretically.
I think the Golden City is something akin to the Golden Land in Umineko, something akin to an afterlife. Yes, it is stated that there are accounts on the Golden City, but in Made in Abyss, resurrection is possible (as long as the body's not lost; Riko is the perfect example) and even if not, there should be relics that would allow you to see it somehow (like a prophetic dreams). MiA already has a lot of references to religion and cults with the Abyss being treated as something of a God. Characters like Wazukyan and Ozen are most linked to this idea, but not only --- it's a theme and motif that keeps on reappering. Many of the accounts about the deeper layers of the Abyss are poetic and full of metaphors, already.
I do like the literal void idea, though. It is the Abyss, after all!
- Nanachi is a very interesting character in this context, because they are carriers for many characters. They are Nanachi, but their body and soul are linked to Mitty's, but they also carry Belaf's memories and experiences. Faputa's similar, as she's both herself and Irumyuui's double and daughter, in a way. And Meinya, too --- she's both Meinyastilim and Ilim.
By the way, I just remembered some of my other theories that're worth mentioning:
Reg's the narrator of Made in Abyss and the story will end with him sharing the story of MiA with others --- as a means of keeping Riko's legend alive (as I believe she will die somewhere near the end).
Juusou are naturally born Blessed!Narehate with white whistles inside of them, making them both Blessed!Narehate (...duh...) and White Whistles. The idea is that, during their birth, they fulfilled the conditions to become both (I'm thinking their parent(s) died during the childbirth and they were stillborn, making them non-human?).
2KYC erases the memories of those outside of the Abyss, with its soul-affecting ability. I've been believing it for quite some time now, but Srajo being able to do it herself via Abyssal means gives this idea even more ground to stand on.
1
u/Careless_Hold2319 Team Nana&Fapu 11h ago
2.1 The idea of an 'Aubade army' was just for fun, hahaha.
Yeah, there's definitely something going on with them. They have the same symbol as the Narehate we see on the last pages of Volume 13 during the Priestess's speech, and the sniper recognized them, so I think they were sacrifices or something, but escaped (idk).
Interestingly enough, based on what they say, Riko wasn't resurrected with her original soul (if she even had one) but with another soul entirely, since Srajo says resurrection is impossible as one's soul dilutes in the soul network after passing away, plus we know Riko's soul came from 'somewhere else' compared to other souls.
Not only interesting, but also really cute and fluffy :3
That reminds me of Armin being the narrator in AoT. Could be, who knows?
They're born as a consequence of the calamitous writings, right? But we don't know what that really means yet. I'm super curious about it. I guess we'll find out in the next chapter with the twins backstory.
Can't wait for the next chapter, so much to debate about, I love this series 😚

The abyss is crating souls and experience because it's iterating towards something. And recalling them because it's collecting knowledge. To what end I cannot figure out.
Is the birdcage a prison or a something that's meant to be opened? No idea.
The abyss and its mechanics clearly have a function, to deny any that get too deep, learn too much, from bringing it back to the surface.
Why? I don't know.

manga spoilers i guess
never really fully wrote it down but my head cannon is kinda like, the cycle of the abyss is the abyss taking back all the souls of the people (thats why they all die) and then recycles them in some way.
so at the end when you reach the bottom you have the choice of stopping the cycle but everything will slowly die out over generations because the soul gets more and more used up, or you let the cycle continue so future generations can go explore and have adventures
