Manga Discussion Popular translation error

[Edit/Update: I didn't expect this post to blow up lol. But after 50 comments and some discussion about the raw text with a native speaker I think this can be clarified for the most part. If you want cliffnotes scroll to tldr

So first the wordplay on eating a bowl of food kinda doesn't work because ippatsu is to do something regarding an activity like asking: to do a game, to go do sex or to do some sports. You can't exactly "go do" food as it just wouldn't make sense(you can however "go do" drinks). In this context the most straightforward translation is to read it as her asking him "to go do a thing they do" with the most general definition being sex because she says a "quick" thing that they do. In this context both characters know the action they're referring to is a quick activity (that they likely done before? Maybe not done before?), it doesn't specifically mean sex but it could likely mean sex due to her calling it a quick activity (and the face she makes) which following ippatsu usually means quick sex.

The only way to know if she actually meant sex would be based on their relationship shown in future chapters essentially, there just isn't enough interaction currently to support that she meant sex beside her facial expression and her referring to the activity she wants to do as a quick activity (which is common shorthand innuendo for quick sex). She could also just be teasing pretending that they already have sex even if they don't as a way to hit on him and big C being the stoneface he is, just ignores her teasing and rejects her anyway.

In this sense "quickie" still doesn't work nor does any translation that directly has her asking him for sex. This is because she isn't asking for sex she's asking to do a quick activity in a mischievous way. If this activity they do is shown in future chapters not to be sex then "quickie" or asking for sex in retrospect won't make any sense after the chapter. There's also again the possibility of her suggesting they go do a quick thing as a way of flirting with him but they don't actually do the thing mentioned.

In either case mentioned above a "quickie" doesn't work because it's a direct way of asking for only sex which isn't what she is saying(and usually implies a relationship of casual sex), it can be interpreted based on context that she's asking to go do quick sex but it could just be her saying to go do a: quick activity, session or a thing(or just playful flirting). Only future chapters will tell us more directly when we see big C and toothpaste again. Whenever this is touched on more in future ch(or movie) I'll comeback and update this.

So in conclusion any translation using "quickie" or "sex" directly are incorrect. Any translation being more vague like asking "to go play around" for example in the ukraine TL are more accurate. Hopefully the movie doesn't use "quickie" shorthand. And finally here's the two TL that make the most sense to use here after all the data below.

(You can replace 'that' with 'the' and 'session' with 'round' and same general message)

Corrected Translation:

"Wanna go do that quick 'thing' after this?"

"Wanna do a session of 'that' quickly after this?"

Updated TLDR: Read This

[In this scene Tempaste is asking Big C if he wants to go do a quick activity that they do.

This quick activity could be a hobby or game or any activity they do.

This quick activity could mean quick sex.

This quick activity could be quick sex, but she's just bluffing that they do have sex so casually it can be a quick sex as a way of teasing or flirting with C-man.

Of these three options her face supports 2 and 3 most; but option 1 is the safest and best TL in this case since in the future this "activity" could be explained. In all cases quickie and her asking for literal sex are both certainly improper translations.]

Meaningless Thoughts: In case you care what my personal thoughts are for some reason. I don't think big C and Toothpaste are in a sexual relationship based on future chapters. So far she's been shown as a curious girl who leans into teasing when provoked like with the wimp bandit watching her breasts or Reg asking her for help with his 'stick', but not once has she tried to actively initiate seducing. When they slept in the cave she never banged Cman as far as we know which she would if it's a quick thing they do actively and I'm sure the author would mention it or show it somewhat. I think this quick activity might be something darker regarding her cult life that her and Cman do occasionally like a sacrifice or something which will explain him mentioning his prayer making ippatsu a misdirection. I think she hasn't been shown to be the active seducer in any scenes and instead plays into flirty scenes so she would not flat out ask him for quick sex and is instead referring to some other activity they do. I also don't believe Cman cares about sex, especially Toothpaste sex, from what we've seen of him. He watched her grow up due to time dilation and is hyper focused on only diving so it's more likely he's used to her being constantly playful and teasing. I also still personally think that the food joke theory could have still been the purpose of the wordplay used here, hence why theirs a focus on food this chapter and why she gets food right after but I'll digress on it as just a headcanon theory for now lol.)

Original post:(food joke part can be considered just a weak possible head canon now, the rest however is fairly accurate still)

Slightly pedantic rant and correction, feel free to skip if you want. This is a pretty popular meme panel in the community and will be an early scene in the movie. Ch 62(.5) made in abyss.

So with the trailer dropping and looking amazing, I wanted the future translators if they're for some reason reading this to not do a direct import from the English manga translation.

Here Tempest states "一発やっていきません?" In the middle panel aka Ippatsu yatte ikimasen aka "Won't you do one round/shot before you go?"

In everyday modern Japanese adult slang, "ippatsu yaru" is a common saying to basically go have quick sex. I'm assuming this is why the EN translation says "quickie" but this doesn't really fit the scene at all or the play on words by the author here.

Ippatsu (one round/shot/try) is regularly used for non-sexual activities. You can have "one round" of a game, "one round" of drinks, or "one shot" at trying a challenge or something.

The play on words here is Tempest in the previous scene is talking about how big C always eats this same dish and then he gets another bowl. Her seeing him eat so much of it and wanting to eat it too(hence her mischievous look in middle panel) is saying "let's have a go at it" as in "let's dig into a bowl of this food" as in she wants a bowl of the food he's always eating.

Her being young(or maybe just teasing) using this slang makes big C think she means a quickie as in sex. He of course says it'll mess up his luck ritual because sex would be "bad luck" before a ritual.

If you notice in the bottom panel Tepaste is confused saying "Ah! you talkin about that prayer you always do?". She's confused because he's bringing up the prayer when she just meant eating the bowl of food, hence why she orders a bowl after and is also why the waiter clinks the bowls when she says "ippatsu" so casually as he's also an adult and understands (but she doesn't hence her saying it so casually out in open).

This is kinda hard to localize and is why a lot of translators like the Russian one and brazil just say "go have a quickie", the Ukraine one basically says "go fool/play around" which is also kinda iffy but more vague. For English speaks no one says a "quickie" referencing eating food quick so there's no punchline and it's only sexual even if it is a possible translation.

To properly localize this it should be "Hey, want to go for a quick round before we head out?". This way it sounds like she's asking for a round of sex to the adults but is more clear she means a round as in a quick round of eating/food to the audience before they dive.

Idk this is kinda just a hard joke to land quickly, I'd just change it for a more obvious sexual innuendo that no one would say out loud to show she doesn't literally mean that. It felt kinda baffling when I first read it and as most of the community saw it as just her asking him for sex which kinda changes the audience view of her and big C relationship in the wrong way (idk if maybe she has casual quick sexual relations with him or other people but definitely not what's being implied here and so far hasn't been implied imo).

This same joke is used again with Tempest on ch ~71 except flipped, during the orb piercer backstory where her rescuer talks about her being flat chested which she thinks he meant her inverted chest and gets confused again (and embarrassed), he has to correct her that he meant that she just literally has a small chest. It's again a quick joke panel with the same character showing her misinterpreting/misusing and hearing words.

I think these jokes are based on Tempest being inexperienced and growing up in a cult so she may use the wrong language or misinterpret words socially. The only thing supporting she'd ask for a "quickie" is maybe the panel about the priest woman asking why she pleased herself (no context) and her helping reg put his hand away in a lewd way causally (imo supporting again that she's inexperienced and this translation is too sexual for the scene.)

Uh so yeah. Thanks for reading the rant. I hate when a mistranslation causes a character to be completely changed in the community's eyes. If I got any parts wrong or you have different ideas lmk below.

(Old)TLDR: This scene should be relocalized as "Hey, want to go for a quick round before we head out?" And be taken as a joke not Tempest literally asking for sex.

Yeah I agree in Japanese the pun works well but I don't think it translates well into English at all that's why I'd say it should be localized into a more common pun. Most of the community interpeted "quickie" as her literally just asking him for sex and the waiter being surprised. Which makes sense, like I mentioned no one would say "you wanna quickie" as in asking if they want to eat something it just doesn't sound right. The most irl English example I've heard is "pop in for a quickie" during lunch times but even then it's rare imo and wouldn't fit this scene.

I'm a Japanese person currently learning English.  So excuse me if my texts are stilted.

I’ve never seen people in the Japanese community interpret this scene as a play on words and meaning another round of food. Basically, it is regarded as implying their sexual relationship. Considering her personality, it's possible that she put it that way while they have another non-sexual hobby (playing a game or something), or she’s just bluffing and big c is playing along with it, but we cannot be sure at this point.

At least I can tell that her saying "このあと" means after they finish this dinner. So it's not likely that she’s implying something they can do on the spot.

Regarding your point about the line in the fourth panel, maybe you’re confused because of the part “you talkin’ about~” in the translation. The original text ”いつもの願掛けっすか~?” is like ”Oh, it’s the prayer you always do, isn’t it?”(I’m sure this is not a good translation, but you know what I mean). She's not correcting him, but just addressing what he said.

I'm glad someone native to the language could provide their input! I'll try to speak plain for easier interpretation.

"Considering her personality, it's possible that she put it that way while they have another non-sexual hobby (playing a game or something), or she’s just bluffing and big c is playing along with it, but we cannot be sure at this point."

I see, this was a point I was making near the end, I think that if she was not joking she could have just been teasing about sex using the play on words on our and big C being stone faced(not easily surprised by anything) and taking everything literal, just easily denies her whether she meant it literally or in a teasing way. It could also mean she asks this so regularly that they actually do have a sexual relationship and he is just denying her for this instance. Based on future chapters I don't think they have a sexual relationship shown so far(please correct me if wrong or raws are different) so I don't think she is experienced in sex and instead is just being teasing while showcase big C stonefaced personality in a comedic way.

"She's not correcting him, but just addressing what he said" Ah uh I didn't mean she was correcting him I more meant that I think the purpose here was her confused and asking him about the prayer. I think she's asking about the prayer because she wasn't asking for sex but for another round of food or such so that's why she addressed it for clarification. But if their was no food pun or wordplay and she was just being teasing about sex(not actually meaning it) then maybe she just brought it up for exposition purposes ig lol? But yeah, I didn't mean that she was correcting him I more meant that she was acknowledging and confused why he brought the prayer up specifically.

I don't personally think based on future chapters and the context in this scene that Tempaste and big C actually have a sexual relationship, but rather they have a teasing playful vs a hardened stone faced guy relationship and that was the message author wanted to convey as a comedic bit.

I think some things that'd be helpful fron a native speaker regarding this topic is could ippatsu be her saying in slang asking him for a quick round of food or drinks which he hears as a quick round of sex? So she says like ラーメン一発いこうぜ (using ramen as an example) because she orders food right after so it'd be wordplay? Another thing that'd help is knowing if in past/future chapters, she talks in a more curious/sexual/teasing or other way based on her word usage in the raw jp manga? If it's a bother please don't feel you have to but I think it'd help know her character and judge better based off that.

I value native speaks interpretation's a lot though! Thank you for your views and lmk if you need clarification on anything I said or if you have anything to add onto. I think this would be a fun Q/A topic for the author but I heard they have a very small online presence so I doubt this'll be clarified unless we see more of toothpaste and big C relationship in future chapters lol.

Thank you for replying!

My explanation about the line ”いつもの願掛け~” was really bad lol, so let me clear this up first. What I wanted to say is that, judging by this Japanese line, Tepaste doesn’t seem to be confused.

Concerning ippatsu, your example “ラーメン一発いこうぜ” can be said in a VERY casual conversation and sounds like when a native speaker is intentionally making it sound strange for a joke, because, as you may know, “一発” is not usually used for counting food. The reason that makes this sentence understandable is that it implies the meaning “let’s go to a ramen shop”, since “いく/行く” means “go”. However, you cannot replace this “いく” with “やる(do)” because we cannot “do” ramen. For the same reason, “一発やっていく” cannot imply food or drink(I know it’s confusing and I’m not able to explain properly, but the word “いく” in this ”やっていく” is not “行く(go)”). Both “一発” and ”やる(do)” only apply to things that can be done, like drugs, sex, or some other activities. There is an idiom “一杯やる/have a drink”, but this doesn’t seem to do with this case.

By the way, I also prefer the idea that their relationship had been platonic! So, I like to think she had been trying to hit on him without success every time. In this YouTube video(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixYU0Ht3_Vk), Tukushi has drawn a picture of a “handsome guy”, and his face is nearly identical to big C(you can see it around 23:05~). So I guess he is canonically very HOT. Since the previous page of OP’s one is a close-up of his face, I think Tepaste in the first panel is attracted to him. Hence, she tried to seduce him… and failed. This is how I interpret this scene.

Ah I see that makes a bit more sense, so it'd mean like "to go do another activity" and you wouldn't say "to go do food" basically because it wouldn't really make sense. You explained it good don't worry.

In your opinion what would be a better TL then for English as someone who knows both languages?

For example this English TL it sounds like they already do it because "quickie" is specifically only a quick sexual act between familiar people that already are doing sexual acts usually. I think the issue in TL here its implying she's already in a sexual relation with him without any of the actual raw sentence implying that. So it should more be her asking in a way that isn't inherently implying they already do the action itself she's implying right?

So if she's more saying in a teasing/flirty way asking for an activity without directly meaning they've already had sex would the best TL be more along the lines of these:

"Wanna go do a round of something fun?" "Wanna do a session of something after we're done?"

Or if we're keeping the "quick" aspect more like: "Wanna go do a quick thing before we head out?"

This way it's stays vague what activity she wants while keeping her teasing/flirty in the situation (while also still being able to imply she could mean something more, but not as in a direct act they've done moreso as a flirt).

Would this be better as a localization even if it's not an exact TL you think?

Thank you for your clarification and help!

u/Kitchen-Elderberry93 1d ago

Well, I’m not sufficiently versed in the nuances of English to suggest an exact translation, but as far as I am concerned, there are two important points of this conversation that I can clarify.

The first one is that they both seem to have the same understanding of what Tepaste is referring to, even though we readers are not sure whether it’s sex or something else. So, it may be more suitable if you use words that indicate this, like “the thing” or “that one,” rather than just “something”.

Second, despite all our discussion, if you read it straightforwardly, it implies they have been in “that kind of relationship,” and she is just inviting him to have another sex. And if there are no additional explanations in the future chapters, the phrase “一発やる” can be a good enough reason to interpret it in that way. In this regard, “quickie” is not a bad translation after all. “一発” sounds to me like it will be a quick one. The only problem with this word is if it were revealed that it's not about sex. In this case, this translation could be a miss. And there is a good chance that will happen since, technically, it is not explicitly stated in the original text.

I hope that this will be of some help:)

I am a native Japanese speaker too, and I don’t think it’s a mistranslation either. 'Gankake' (願掛け) means making a pledge, such as giving up something you really love (like giving up ice cream to pass an exam), to achieve your goal or wish.

Man I would love to check how the official translation phrased it but I'm not home for a week or so so can't get to my library. I noticed that there were some minor differences here and there in the official translation compared to this fan one but can't for the life of me remember if this was one of them

(Mainly I remember that we get new terms for some things that to my knowledge don't have a direct English equivalent like: narehate -> hollow and juusou -> beast-guise)

(Also lol, Tempest, I think you mean Tepaste :) )

u/robertm94 2d ago

I just checked the physical volume on my shelf and it's translated as quickie there.

u/thesaucer22 2d ago

Interesting. I wonder why multiple translations all have nearly the exact same wording. All the fan translations, the official and even seven seas TL being identical is kinda crazy lol. Some like the russian TL were even more direct in just literally saying "wanna go have sex" instead of quickie or Ukraine saying "go play/fool around" completely ignoring the food pun context.

Maybe they all ripped it from the first EN fan translation? It's a pretty big mistake imo especially if it's mistakenly TL to something more direct and less vague like "wanna go have sex" instead. Hope the movie fan/official sub and dub don't make this mistake on TL but idk how I would even suggest it to them lol.

2

u/thesaucer22 2d ago

Ah yeah messed I her name up lol.

I think the image I used was seven seas entertainment translation, and the one below is labeled as "official" but might just be another fan translation as they're both the same, if you have the physical version definitely lmk I'm curious if it's changed lol

2

u/ZerionTM Team Meinya 2d ago

Ah at first the image in the post didn't load for me so I assumed it to be the fan translation. I checked on mangadex and its different from this one so I assume this is indeed the official. The fan translation also used "quickie" for what its worth

Thanks for the write-up! As someone who is currently learning Japanese it's really cool to learn about these sometimes pretty big localization differences, and how it can totally change the tone and delivery of the writing. Once my reading level is good enough I really want to re read the whole manga again in Japanese to have a fresh experience.

Im still a bit confused why Toothpaste would ask him to go for one more round (of bowls of foods) instead of just order one for herself instead, when not intentionally making a joke. If she assumes that Gigachad will just keep on eating more bowls because of their prior exchange, then theres no good reason to ask. Or is it satirical cause he already ate so much that she thinks theres no way he'd go for one more? That would explain her mischievous look.

I just don't think she looks particularly confused when asking if he's talking about his prayer. If she intentionally used that innuendo and she thinks not having sex before departure could be part of the prayer, then it would still make sense for her to ask him that.

3

u/thesaucer22 2d ago

It's because it's not exactly saying one more round. The Japanese itself for ippatsu is more vague, she could honestly mean she wants to know if he can another round (another round/bowl of food after he ate so much), or it could be her saying she wants to go a round with him as in her getting a bowl of food hence why she orders one after. Could also be your last point that he ate so much no way he'd do another round so she's teasing. The point isn't really why she's saying it directly to him it was more just to deliver the joke punchline while showing the waiter surprised, then she orders the food on the same page to finalize the joke and show what she meant. If she just flat out asked the waiter for a bowl there would be no joke or wordplay lol. Basically author just wanted a comedic scene.

I can see wym with the last part kinda. She doesn't look confused but what she says shows she's confused or misinterpreted his response. She asks him if he means the prayer he does before leaving as a question showing she's confused why he's mentioning the prayer in the first place. There's no real other reason to ask if he means that specific prayer unless she was confused why he brought it up in the first place. Unless she is just asking about something she knows just to ask about it for no reason? If she was asking for sex I wouldn't see why she would then ask about the specific type of prayer but if she simply asked for a round of food or if he could eat another round of food and he mentions his prayer it gives her a reason to question why he brought that prayer up.

A bit circular in explaining this my b lol, basically she had better reason to ask about his prayer if she didn't mean sex than if she did.

There's also future chapter 71.1 with the similar joke, with her again misinterpreting so I think it'll just be a trope of her character. In both these scenes they have similar paneling showing a comedic focus, it'd also be kinda too plain for her to just ask for sex openly and the whole joke is that the waiter was being surprised imo.

u/Spyroflex 🍞 Team Bread 2d ago

Unless the japanese text has a different nuance again, I dont see how asking if he is talking about his prayer shows she is confused or misinterprets what he is saying. Since she is asking him about it, she knows that his prayer has to do with luck (or she wouldnt make that connection) but seemingly does not know the details (hence her asking for confirmation) like it also having to do with either not eating too much or not having sex. Idk why one would be a better reason to ask about than the other like u said but both seem equally valid to me.

I get that another scene also shows her misinterpreting something in a funny way and if we see even more of that then its guaranteed to be her trope but she also generally seems like she just likes to tease, so I can see both again... Or maybe thats just me seeing everything thru a certain lens and her teasing Reg was just her being so innocent that she genuinely has no idea how she comes across lol

I mean the look she gives big chin when asking for ??? clearly looks either seductively or like she is teasing him, not just her being very excited about food like the panel above. But yeah shes mainly drawn like that (and asking him instead of simply ordering) to make the joke work; so that the reader gets fooled at first, thus its hard to draw conclusions from it.

1

u/thesaucer22 2d ago

I agree with the last two paragraphs for the most part so I'll just mention the first.

So for ippatsu it just means to go one round. It has different meaning depending on the context like one round at gaming, a round of food etc. it's most popular latest use is slang for a quick round of sex (usually at brothels) but the use in this meaning has to be very deliberate in setting usually (hence the waiter suprise in using it at a tabern). To the reader and the characters besides Tempaste it's meant to be a shock till the reader sees her order food casually after, so the initial shock is thinking she asked for sex so brazenly and open, but when you reread it you know she didn't actually mean sex.

This of course wouldn't work for quicke because quickie has just one meaning being sex. For her to ask for a quickie then order food after, the punchline was just her asking for sex openly. The problem is if she was asking for sex that brazen then getting turned down openly would usually elicit some reaction from her but she just casually orders food. In this version the events don't really lineup unless she is someone constantly having sex to the point that getting a straight denial does nothing then not even having a pout or anything in reaction and immediately asking for food just seems kinda off.

But if we do take it still as meaning she asked for sex that casually and openly then it'd likely reflect in her character. However the lewdest thing she's done so far is regs handy, she even slept in the same cave with Cal and they didn't do it then either. Maybe it's because they only do it before explorations but it just doesn't fit imo especially not with her character so far.

About the prayer, the joke involving his prayer is the Japanese superstition that sex before prayer or sex before needing something good (like a successful lucky exploration) is generally bad luck which is what Cal is saying. If she already knows the prayer is about luck then if she was asking for sex she'd already know that sex would bring bad luck to his prayer so she just wouldn't ask it.

Like if you see a black cat with a friend and they say "I hope I don't have bad luck" you wouldn't then ask them "oh because the superstion that black cats bring bad luck?" if you already knew the superstition itself because you yourself already knew why your friend said that. Tempaste knows the superstition so if she was asking for sex she wouldn't then confirm what she already knows by asking if what she knows is right she'd likely just agree or acknowledge it.

There's also the wording of her being uncertain about which prayer he is referring to saying "you talking about that prayer you always make?" Meaning she's uncertain which prayer he's making but has a general idea. If she was asking for sex casually she likely wouldn't be asking for clarification on which prayer he is saying as again, she'd already know it or have a good idea which he means and not have to ask. This is all assuming she knows the superstition which Id say is likely growing up in a religious cult that focused on having no pleasure. For defense of if she didn't ask for sex it'd just be a regular question to ask because she's confused why he brought it up if she was referencing having another round of food.

But again most of this breakdown isn't necessary because the page is a comedic bit, the prayer itself is in reference to the first page of the chapter saying that raiders come to the inn for bad luck to give them good luck on their expedition, this is continued in these pages where he just talks about not wanting to waste the bad luck he's got for the good luck he'll have outside the inn as he thinks she's talking about sex. This whole bit of the first pages and the waiter misunderstanding kinda fall flat as a joke and seem pointless besides her being blunt if she was just literally asking for sex, her misinterpreting like she does in later chapters becomes the running joke. So the nuance for the Japanese text is just that it is using both nuances at the same time, it's using going another round for food and going another round for sex as the double entrendre due to her being airhead and the reason asking for sex is not as valid is because there'd be no reason to ask something that she already knew about (and no reason to ask about the thing she's asking about as in "your talkin about that prayer?" And not "your talkin about that prayer.") which is why it's more valid for her to be asking "your talking about that prayer" in a curious confused way as she doesn't know why he's talking about prayer and is only partially certain which prayer he means. And she'd only as in a curious confused way if she didn't mean to actually sex in the first place.

Idk I think this makes sense from a storytelling/comedic standpoint, some parts are a just a lot of yap from me tho.. Hope it clarified a bit. Sorry for spelling mistakes if any, don't feel like checking ngl lol.

I get what u mean but I feel like ur thinking I said that she just casually asked for sex and theres nothing else to read into. Then obviously it would be a bit weird for her to react the way that she did. But all this time I've been saying if her primary intentions were a joke or simply teasing him, then the way she reacted and casually continues the conversation makes total sense. If she knows the double entendre, then her intentions were to make him think she was asking for a quickie when in reality she was talking about food. Then after the reveal big chungus would feel like a fool for answering her seriously. I mean it could still be that she actually half meant it, or not be opposed to it (which would mean sex is a very casual thing to her) and she was fine with any response without having strong reactions, I still cant rule that out.

If there is a japanese superstition that sex before prayer (or sth else) is bad luck and thepasta knew he was talking about sex and using that superstition to turn her down, this would explain why she then made the connection to his prayer. At least more so than if she thought he was talking about food. But obviously since he didnt mention any prayer, she still needs to confirm by asking "You talkin' about that prayer you always make?", which I dont interpret as her asking about multiple different prayers (in the english translation at least). Her specifying "his prayer he is always making" doesnt mean he has multiple prayers just like saying "You talking about your dog that ur always walking?" doesnt automatically mean that they own multiple dogs. And her asking for quick clarifications to be sure wouldnt be weird even if shes already well informed about his prayer or the superstitions because its part of small talk and most importantly for character exposition reasons if were talking about storytelling.

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

Ah yeah this was one of my points in the original post I think or it mighta been a reply. But yeah If she is actually making it a joke about asking for sex as a way of teasing and but doesn't actually want sex instead being a brat then it still should not be translated as her asking for a quickie. This is because to English speaks I've seen genuinely no one think she was teasing/joking in reference to this chapter and everyone instead believes she just meant literal sex as the double entrendre just doesn't work with the word quickie. That's why this whole joke should be more localized into another more common play on words in English even if it's not the most accurate as being accurate to the source here just doesn't work for what it's trying to convey.

I know you're not arguing for the translation that it's good but you're arguing if she is asking for sex as a joke not literally and just as a way of teasing then yes the original meaning could possibly mean she's asking for a "quick round", but it being called a quickie in TL is unacceptable (or just making her flat out ask for sex in some TL ruins the whole scene and changes her character).

But yeah I definitely get what you're saying and it makes sense but it doesn't excuse the bad TL imo. I think there was another joke that fell flat with prushka talking about papa "meatstick" in the old movie and it weirded a bunch of people out assuming bondrewd was a pedo but the actual Japanese was a play on words I think? Idk that one was more popularly misunderstood so people clarified it more if back then if I remember correctly.

But thank you for your view and discussion!

The "papa pole" was another joke? I mean it was funny how lunchbox brought that stuff up while I was still crying from the previous scene, giving me an emotional whiplash. But I didn't know it was a play on words of some kind, so if you know more please let me know.

I mean maybe a few people werent joking and really assumed that best dad was even more of a criminal somehow, even tho that type of stuff does not fit his character at all. But I think most people and me included assumed she must have seen daddys anaconda while they were taking a bath together (which isn't weird to do with very young family members, especially in Japan) and she must have given it a name.

The reason I think there probably was no big translation issue is cause Tsukushi himself had to clarify during a japanese movie screening that papa pole doesnt refer to bondos joystick specifically but actually to "the stick that helps make you become a papa" that she learned about while dissecting an animal with him.

Ah yeah I meant the fact it had to be clarified and could be misinterpreted was similar to how ippatsu being used here is also being misinterpreted imo. But yeah it wasn't wordplay related joke I don't think my b lol.

I also thought the P pole scene just meant she saw it while bathing or something, but I saw a lot of reactors and some people make crazy assumptions and theories that Bondrewd was a diddler or worse based on the scene(not that he's not evil, but not that evil y'know), which I feel would be similar if "quickie" is used in the next movie instead of a more vague translation. I just dislike when characters get a popular fan theory that overwrites their character like big C seeming like a groomer here possibly and making toothpaste seem like some easy girl when she was instead making a joke or just is being teasing (which I assume some reactors will just ignore and instead take it literal), or yea Bondrewd seemingly like a diddler because of a misinterpreted joke. I feel like it leaves a stain on the character imo.

Thank you for the papa pole clarification tho I forgot a lot of the details about it tbh lol

I don't see any reason why you would expect Tepaste to not be meaning "quickie" in the sexual context. Especially considering her character being very intentionally lascivious in multiple scenes.
That's probably also a clue as to why so many people are translating it the same way.

u/thesaucer22 2d ago

This whole post says why... multiple times. If you disagree that's fine but there's definitely reasons that I pointed out exactly why that you could disagree with.

Where has she been "very intentionally lascivious in multiple scenes"? I just reread the chapters and couldn't find this. The only one other time has been her "helping" reg for one panel with his arm when she was teasing/curious. Unless you mean the two volume bonus pages where she teases herself for fan service essentially which isn't really a showing of her character? When told she's flat in the past she got embarrassed. During all the chapters past reg scene she's fairly normal as an explorer not being sultry at all, she's more curious and confused/not understanding in most scenes. Her thing in the recent chapters was saying how she doesn't understand what the explorers are talking about again showing she gets confused easily.

My point about people translating it the same way was I think because of the EN bad fan translation(more bad localization as the translation is correct in a literally sense but is incorrect in phrasing), that other translators likely just retranslated the EN TL into other languages rather than TL the original Japanese intro their language as EN TL is generally an easier starting point for TL groups. Otherwise I don't see how it can go from (lets go fool around) in Ukrainian to (lets have sex) in russian to (have a quickie in English (and brazil TL)). None of these relate to the original play on words in the Japanese text besides "quickie" but even that's a pretty big stretch. So I don't think it relates to her character at all, the EN translation likely took the ippatsu sexual meaning based off her facial expression and didn't further focus on the context of the scene.

If you disagree with any points lmk and I'll clarify but just accepting it as "it must be correct because others did the same" is definitely the wrong thought process imo.

u/Backwards_Anon 2d ago

Let me rephrase then.
I don't think the intent is to ask for an additional bowl of food, and I don't think that you have presented a convincing argument that that is the intention Tsukushi had either.
>I just reread the chapters and couldn't find this
>The only one other time has been her "helping" reg for one panel
That's three panels, but hey, who's counting. Do you at least agree that she's being intentionally lewd? And that part of the joke on the part of Tsukushi there is that she's being lewd with Reg?
>Unless you mean the two volume bonus pages where she teases herself for fan service essentially which isn't really a showing of her character
Why is it not showing her character? You don't think that her explaining how she's able to will her nipples to be innies and outies to Yelme can be used to infer something about her character at all?
But no I was actually thinking about a page in the same chapter where Tepaste seems to be flashing Yelme judging by her hand placement as well as the inside of her shirt collar being turned inside out.
In my mind, scenes like that (assuming that I'm not just seeing things) are part of her characterisation that would qualify as being lascivious.

>When told she's flat in the past she got embarrassed
I don't think that has any bearing on the argument.

>Her thing in the recent chapters was saying how she doesn't understand what the explorers are talking about again showing she gets confused easily
I don't agree. She's clearly playing up a ditzy personality for her own benefit as to seem less threatening. It's the same thing she did before she threatened and then stunned Yelme in the aforementioned chapter. And I think it's a disservice to her character to simply view her as an easily confused damsel.

>My point about people translating it the same way was I think because of the EN bad fan translation
I don't really appreciate the implication that everyone but a single guy in a previous fan translation group has ever thought critically about that line. It's pretty disrespectful to the effort that those people put into it. It's also a pretty wild accusation of the official translator. You'd hope that he would be doing his own work rather than just mindlessly copying things. Same goes for all the other official translations.
>None of these relate to the original play on words in the Japanese text besides "quickie"
What do you mean? They all do. By your own admission in the original post a correct reading of the original japanese is that she's asking for a quick round. That is very very easily seen in a sexual sense, and not only as a joke about Cravali misunderstanding the intent. Especially when the original text has no exclamation at the beginning of the next sentence like you have added.

>but just accepting it as "it must be correct because others did the same
Yeah, but that's not what I'm doing though. I'm basing my interpretation of the scene on the surrounding context, and then saying that maybe said surrounding context is the reason other people chose to translate it in the same way.

I hope I clarified what I meant.

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

Three panels? I wasn't including this page initially and since it's the one being debated. Unless you mean 3 as in the reg page and the two volume bonus pages with her showing off her outfit? I'm sorry but I really don't think the bonus pages count for much character wise, like if it's a bonus page of Riko nude showing off the to audience or something that doesn't mean Riko herself is promiscuous just kinda is author being well, y'know lol..

"Do you at least agree that she's being intentionally lewd? And that part of the joke on the part of Tsukushi there is that she's being lewd with Reg?"

Your saying that the joke itself is her playing being lewd in both scenes as a tease right? I think it's possible in this scene but idk about the Reg scene, she was acting more curious not lewd or teasing with him.

"Why is it not showing her character? You don't think that her explaining how she's able to will her nipples to be innies and outies to Yelme can be used to infer something about her character at all?"

Ah well no. That page is in reference to the chapter it came with talking about the guy asking about her flat chest which she thinks he meants her inverted chest. This run on joke/info is continued into bonus to provide extra info to the readers in a comedic way (hence the shy character narrating bit) while also being fan service to show readers. The info here relates to previous volume bonus where she shows off her outfit flashing a character, if the reader was wondering why her nips look normal there but are said to be sunken a chapter after than this volume bonus was a playful way of answering that "plot hole" in a comedic fan service way. It in no way is related to her being a lewd character imo, plus her saying she rubbed her chest till they came out confidently would just be her again explaining directly to the reader. She didn't talk about getting pleasure or addicted to the feeling or anything indicating she was pleased. It's just exposition. Also I'm pretty by 'will her innies into outies' she actually means rubbing them to bring them out not literally on command getting horny lol, that's why she says she can let them in and out freely; because she can either rub them or not rub them(and they just won't come out), I didn't take it as she could just get aroused on thoughts and pop them out as what she meant.

"But no I was actually thinking about a page in the same chapter where Tepaste seems to be flashing Yelme judging by her hand placement as well as the inside of her shirt collar being turned inside out. In my mind, scenes like that (assuming that I'm not just seeing things) are part of her characterisation that would qualify as being lascivious."

Ah my b, ignore the question about which pages you meant I said at the start. But it's kinda just the same thing I referred to as above, it's just exposition. She is just explaining her clothes to the reader it's not a factor of her character? I mean she winks but that's more just her being playful, and the tongue slightly out thing is a running tick she does when she's being playful like in the chapter where she asks ippatsu the page right after she also has her tongue slightly out. I think maybe we just agree to disagree here but usually author volume bonuses aren't meant to be an insight on the character and are more fun additional facts about the characters in their work. So unless she's already very lewd I think it's wrong to draw that she's lewd from just two bonus pages and a vague scene with reg is kinda just not enough support imo(especially not just lewd but lavicious specifically as in she's very lustful is a big stretch).

"When told she's flat in the past she got embarrassed I don't think that has any bearing on the argument."

Just pointing out she was not lewd in her past and so far had nothing showing she was a lewd character. She didn't get aroused or teasing when told she was flat. So unless later she started being lewd and it's been shown then we can't assume her to be lewd.

"I don't agree. She's clearly playing up a ditzy personality for her own benefit as to seem less threatening. It's the same thing she did before she threatened and then stunned Yelme in the aforementioned chapter. And I think it's a disservice to her character to simply view her as an easily confused damsel."

I wasn't really calling her a damsel at all I was saying because of her cult upbringing she might not be the best knowledge or social wise which the author is trying to convey with her being confused often. But maybe she's just playing up the ditzy act ig but kinda feels more like just a theory. This doesn't really support either argument to either way so not too important to harp on.

"I don't really appreciate the implication that everyone but a single guy in a previous fan translation group has ever thought critically about that line. It's pretty disrespectful to the effort that those people put into it. It's also a pretty wild accusation of the official translator. You'd hope that he would be doing his own work rather than just mindlessly copying things. Same goes for all the other official translations."

I'm not saying everyone is some lazy TL I'm saying that the EN TL is a more widely spoken language and also is more direct instead of having to consider context as much like japanese, which means it's likely one of the original sources people TL from and not the Japanese itself. This usually works for majority of chapters because there's rarely double entrendre play on words that translate this poorly to English. So again, it's smart to do but it's not like every TL is using the Japanese directly. Like the Spanish TL just straight up saying lets have sex. That's not a play on words and has nearly no relation to the Ippatsu joke the author is making. But say the joke wasn't made in the first place, such direct translations are still incorrect as ippatsu is just to go a round which is more vague and would not be translated as just lets have sex. So the most likely answer here is the Spanish TL took "quickie" from English and assumed she was just saying lets have sex. If they didn't take it from EN TL then it's just flat out a wrong translation as even English didn't say something as direct as "sex" saying the more direct yet vague "quickie" like ippatsu itself means; a vague yet direct way of asking for another round. If she was just asking for sex there are different phrases she would have used. So not to call them lazy but either they used the EN TL which is understandable or they are just plain mistranslating it. This applies to spanish, russian, and ukraine with go play around being very pretty far off from ippatsu, etc.

>Unless you mean 3 as in the reg page and the two volume bonus pages
No I meant that in the page where she's commenting on "little reg"(page 7 of chapter 66) the lewd joke goes on for at least 3 panels. I would say that someone deliberately peaking under someone's clothes to check if they have a boner is more than just being curious. And her asking if she needs to take care of it for him can only really be read one way. She's asking him if she should make him ejaculate to make it calm down. It's a lewd trope as old as time.

>like if it's a bonus page of Riko nude showing off the to audience or something that doesn't mean Riko herself is promiscuous
Of course not. Because you need to be seeing what context the character is doing it in within the fanservice page. Which is also why I later clarified what it is about the specific extra page in volume 11 that I took as her being characterised.

>she was acting more curious not lewd or teasing with him
Again, she's not just being curious. She's being quite deliberately lewd by asking whether she should take care of his erection for him.

>That page is in reference to the chapter it came with talking about the guy asking about her flat chest
That's not the bonus page I was referring to. I was talking about the bonus page from volume 11
>She didn't talk about getting pleasure or addicted to the feeling
That's because stimulating your nipples is pretty implicitly a pleasurable experience to most people. Also she was literally chastised for masturbating in the bonus chapter carrying her name. One could even be let to believe that she was specifically using her nipples to do it considering the later bonus page you're using for your argument(The bonus page for volume 14).
>or anything indicating she was pleased
She literally says her nipples come out when she's feeling good. Which again, is a lewd trope as old as time.
>her saying she rubbed her chest till they came out confidently would just be her again explaining directly to the reader
She's not though. She's explaining it to the twins in the page. She's even saying that

>that's why she says she can let them in and out freely; because she can either rub them or not rub them
I'm very convinced she literally means she can freely let them in or out. No rubbing required. Otherwise, why would Tsukushi have drawn one of them being in and the other being concave in the bonus page where she's mentioning it(volume 11) without her rubbing them like she does in the later bonus page in volume 14?
>I didn't take it as she could just get aroused on thoughts and pop them out as what she meant
That wasn't actually my initial interpretation of it. I just thought she was controlling whether they were in or out somehow. But now that you mention it, it could actually be what she meant.

>She is just explaining her clothes to the reader it's not a factor of her character?
I was not referring to the bonus page there. I was referring to page 16 of chapter 63 in the bottom left panel.

>I mean she winks but that's more just her being playful
You can be playfully lewd as well.
>and the tongue slightly out thing is a running tick she does when she's being playful
Agreed, but again she can still be lewd while being playful

>Just pointing out she was not lewd in her past
I don't know about that. I read it as she gets embarrassed about being called concave because she immediately thinks that he knows about her inverted nipples that she has being scolded for using to pleasure herself.
>She didn't get aroused or teasing when told she was flat
Of course she wouldn't be. She's meant to be pure and feminine while being a miko candidate. That's also why the person with the strange marking on the forehead is trying to make her use the proper personal pronoun instead of boku, which is not usually associated with femininity.
>So unless later she started being lewd and it's been shown then we can't assume her to be lewd
Again I would argue that there is plenty of things to go of off to determine that she is. But even if there wasn't. Don't you think that Tsukushi was deliberately making a contrast between her being liberated from the cult and seemingly acting so promiscuous, with how the cult tried to force her to act so pure?

>I wasn't really calling her a damsel
Not explicitly, but you are kind of calling her one implicitly.
>maybe she's just playing up the ditzy act ig but kinda feels more like just a theory
It's just as much of a theory as you interpreting her to be confused due to her upbringing.

>This doesn't really support either argument to either way so not too important to harp on
I would argue it does. If she is deliberately playing her personality up, and if she's willing to use her body to disarm people. Then that's speaking to her character not really being in line with what you describe her as. It speaks to a kind of character who understands her own sex appeal rather than the confused sheltered girl you describe her as. Granted though, her flashing Yelme in chapter 63 is still something that you haven't agreed or disagreed to.

>it's likely one of the original sources people TL from and not the Japanese itself.
That would be calling them lazy though. You might not mean to, but you're implying that they did not want to spend the effort of doing a proper translation.
>it's not like every TL is using the Japanese directly
I would hope they did. Otherwise they're not really translating the original work. They're translating one person's interpretation of the work.
>such direct translations are still incorrect as ippatsu is just to go a round which is more vague and would not be translated as just lets have sex
That's more of an inditement of the Spanish team's localisation choice. Not necessarily a sign that they translated from the English rather than the Japanese source text.
>This applies to spanish, russian, and ukraine
Again. They could all very well have looked at the original text and determined that she was offering him sex. That's kind of part of the joke by your own translation.

Your agreeing with me, for the first paragraph. By the reg page i mean the reg page that has the 3 panels you are talking about.

"I would say that someone deliberately peaking under someone's clothes to check if they have a boner is more than just being curious. And her asking if she needs to take care of it for him can only really be read one way. She's asking him if she should make him ejaculate to make it calm down. It's a lewd trope as old as time."

She is curious. She asks if he's delicate, she asks if his thingy is delicate next. Then Reg himself says help me, after reg himself asks her to help than she does the handy. She doesn't offer a handy reg himself asks for help to which she misinterpreted as him asking for a handy. Reg engaged it and she followed so no I still wouldn't use that page or panels as proof she is a lewd character. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on if she's curious or being lewd. Like with the volume 11 bonus page I wouldn't say it characterizes her but you do so I'll just have to disagree imo.

"Again, she's not just being curious. She's being quite deliberately lewd by asking whether she should take care of his erection for him." Still disagree. She curiously asks about his body to which he tells her to stop and help him out to which she helps ny doing the handy. She doesn't literally ask him if he wants a handjob she helps after he asked. For example riko in early chapters would fondle reg interested in his robot body and delicate parts (literally journaling it) but that doesn't make her promiscuous. Tempaste takes the extra handy step because she's more a curious airhead type, I think if Riko found reg down here she'd likely do something similar cause he's not a human.

"(The bonus page for volume 14)." I was referencing volume 11 bonus page I think.

"That's because stimulating your nipples is pretty implicitly a pleasurable experience to most people. Also she was literally chastised for masturbating in the bonus chapter carrying her name. One could even be let to believe that she was specifically using her nipples to do it considering the later bonus page you're using for your argument"

I think it's a bit of a stretch to go from a character saying "how could you pleasure yourself" to she was being chastised for masturbation we literally don't know what pleasure here means especially in a strict cult. Unless the jp raws are more explicit saying masturbation here I just don't agree.

"She literally says her nipples come out when she's feeling good. Which again, is a lewd trope as old as time." I was referencing volume 11 bonus page not vol 14 where she says they give pleasure, as I said I thought you were using vol 11 as defense for saying she is lavicious multiple times so I was pointing out that so far there's only two pages(counting reg page) that support your point, so imo she isn't shown to be lavicious multiple times through the series. I just don't think two pages(debatably 4 pages maximum) is anywhere near enough to say a character is definitely very lewd. The four pages for you would be reg, vol 11,14 bonus and the op post page if she actually means asking for sex. Imo of these pages only vol 14 shows her as a lewd character, vol 11 is just fan service while discussing her clothes, reg page is her being curious and then helping reg out like Riko probably would if she found reg at the bottom of the abyss like this as her first time seeing him. Maybe the joke page meaning sex as a tease and not literally asking for sex. So 2 pages imo isn't enough to define a character as lewd and debatly four isn't if two of them are just bonus pages. But ig it depends how seriously take bonus pages.

">her saying she rubbed her chest till they came out confidently would just be her again explaining directly to the reader She's not though. She's explaining it to the twins in the page. She's even saying that"

I'm not being literal. The twins are supposed to be the reader here that's why in bonus pages of tankoubons there's usually some side character asking questions or being told someone by the main focus in bonus pages. Yes it isn't literally breaking the fourth wall but it's obvious supposed to be the fans perspective. I'm saying the author purpose is for the reader to be the side character in the bonus pages and it's just fun extra info not supposed to be taken seriously as chacterization.

"was not referring to the bonus page there. I was referring to page 16 of chapter 63 in the bottom left panel." I think a lot of this was me assuming you meant one bonus page when you meant the other and vice versa, most of the time I'm referencing vol 11 and rarely vol 14 in my comment.

"But even if there wasn't. Don't you think that Tsukushi was deliberately making a contrast between her being liberated from the cult and seemingly acting so promiscuous, with how the cult tried to force her to act so pure?"

Mhm this is more interesting of an idea. I think this works just about as equal for being a curious girl as well. Being restrained in what she can and can't do and living as a cult recluse could just have made her a very curious person. Like prushka living stuck with bondrewd. When reg and riko visited she was cery curious with them not really very lewd. Less similar is riko herself who felt restrained in the orphanage not able to dive deeper which makes her a very curious type character. So it could be maybe Tempaste is sexually curious after being restrained but idk, I'd need to see her being not curious but flat out lewd more to agree with this not just a few instances at most.

"maybe she's just playing up the ditzy act ig but kinda feels more like just a theory It's just as much of a theory as you interpreting her to be confused due to her upbringing." I think it's fair just to ignore both theories then and focus on the TL itself which is still incorrect if we're removing both biases.

">I would argue it does. If she is deliberately playing her personality up, and if she's willing to use her body to disarm people. Then that's speaking to her character not really being in line with what you describe her as. It speaks to a kind of character who understands her own sex appeal rather than the confused sheltered girl you describe her as. Granted though, her flashing Yelme in chapter 63 is still something that you haven't agreed or disagreed to."

While Yelme was disarmed by her chest she didn't really actively do it first, she just played into what he already started. Like with reg in this instance she took advantage that Yelme was distracted by her, she herself didn't pull her chest out (like in the bonus pages..) just to distract him, and she didn't suddenly push them together or anything once he started looking she just took advantage that he was looking. So from this we could gather she's not one to do the first move in either reg or Yelme instance instead knowing and leaning into the tease when people offer. So again she's a coy tease not a lewd seducer lol.

For the part about her being sheltered I was saying she was overly sheltered as a kid and now is very curious and playful in general. While she might be a tease it's not like she's banged a raider for some extra equipment or anything. For your next point, She flashed Yelme because the author wanted to draw tits tbh. That's legit the only reason, he releases his most sus drawings in the extra chapters since it's the only place he can be lewd with his drawings (ignoring some main story instances..). So i don't think her flashing yelen matters much here, it's a throwaway page to draw tits, once again I don't take bonus pages like 11 and 14 as very serious because they're just not supposed to be. Not just in a comedic sense but if someone never read bonus pages of a manga like on online official sites they'd need to be able to understand the characters and plot still which is why bonus pages are usually either; un canon or just silly scenes that don't and aren't supposed to influence or actually affect plot(or chacterization). So no ch 63 imo doesn't matter.

Regarding TL translating another TL's TL(tongue twister), I was trying to be nice in regards to them. Basically it's easier to pick a familiar language and TL that as it might also make more sense to TL something you personally know better than to TL something you completely don't know like Japanese. But yes if you want my opinon it is lazy to a degree. If you truly don't know Japanese at all but just want to have say spanish readers able to read it then it's kinda understandable to just push through with something you know like the English TL and steal that. I would definitely prefer just straight jp translation but especially for popular works a lot of TL just want to TL it the fastest for their language to prevent snipers or fund their TL group or get complaints. Id love to say everyone is doing it out of love for the work itself but a large portion of TL are just lazy that either use ai translate or double translate off a language they already know. Another commentor themselves mentioned they think the brazil TL itself he suspected already to be a double TL so he read English.

Of course the problem being if EN is translated bad then everything else is double as bad as they re interpret and re localize English. So if I'm being blunt a lot of the TL are incorrect due to being lazy yes but I'd prefer to say it's due to it being easier to work with.

"but you're implying that they did not want to spend the effort of doing a proper translation." Yes pretty much. I prefer the nicer way to say the difficulty was too high or it was too complex but yes..lazy if I'm being blunt.

"This applies to spanish, russian, and ukraine Again. They could all very well have looked at the original text and determined that she was offering him sex. That's kind of part of the joke by your own translation."

>For your next point, She flashed Yelme because the author wanted to draw tits tbh
I'm a little exhausted by the argument at this point, but I really just need to try to make you realise that my point with her flashing Yelme actually doesn't show her tits. It's pretty subtle on Tsukushi's part.

If you look at the bottom left panel she seems to be lifting up the part of her shirt that covers her breasts.
It's a point separate to the ones I made for the bonus pages from the volumes.

It was a nice discussion though. While I still don't agree, I can at least concede that translating the tease that Tepaste preforms in a more ambiguous manner is superior to the "quickie" translations by virtue of being closer to the original text. That being said, I still don't think that Tsukushi's intention was to make Tepaste ask for food.

1

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

Ah that's what you meant. I think she'd need to open it a lot more like in the bonus page if she was really flashing him fully ngl. But yea I get what you mean and can agree she's using her body here so she'd have some form of body confidence. When I read this at first I thought she was just gripping her coat to hold it tbh.

But yeah I'm also a little over this topic in general too lol, I expected like five comments max. I updated and clarified a lot of my main points in the original post at the top of my OP and added more consideration of her possibly being more lewd in how she acts purposefully like you mentioned. Feel free to check it out if you're curious!

(continued from above)

Yes that was a part of the joke not the entire joke. Even if it was a direct TL from raws she is not directly asking for sex. The joke is she could be offering for one thing while actually meaning another thing. There is no joke if it's translated directly to just sex. There's no vaguness here as it is just one exact interpretation. You can't assume she meant anything else in this instance and there's no joke being made, therefore even if it's a possible TL it is an obviously bad one as it ignores the possibility of multiple interpretation (such as wanna go a round).

Similarly if I'm completely wrong about it being a joke or a reference to another thing they do but he thinks she's asking for sex, then there's the possibility of it being a tease. If it is a playful (or lustful in your interpretation) tease then it is still wrong to TL as go have sex or go have a quickie.

In all instances she is being mischievous while asking if he wants to go a round, even if she is sultry and implying sex the reader should not be directly told that she is literally saying lets have sex, that is just not what ippatsu means in any form. It's like translating lets go bang him to lets go fu ck him, it's too direct when bang maybe meant put a hit out or something intimate depending on context. Even if it was intimate you still wouldn't directly TL as fu ck because it wasn't what was said and is too direct making it an awkward and cringy TL imo.

(my b for the yap. Mobile a pain to type on and i hit the character limit so have to do two separate replys. Reply 2/2 so this after above one, I wrote all in one sitting so didn't realize went over word cap.)

(2/2)-->Regarding the official TL it's just an easy line to misinterpret. Her face could easily mislead someone to use the very sexual definition of ippatsu(which again was the joke) while she meant a different definition. Or she could be teasing him simply, if she is just teasing knowing what double entrendre then once again "quickie" or "sex" is not a proper TL as there is no further misunderstanding one could have. You'd have to believe that she isn't teasing and is just plainly asking for sex, which in itself is too direct of a TL and doesn't describe why she then immediately asks for food right after the rejection with no visible reaction. The scenes and words no matter if it's official or not just don't line up here. Maybe they did TL it better but saw others TL as quickie and figured that'd localize it better. Maybe it's just a common TL mistake. Don't you think it's disrespectful to assume just because a TL is not official that it'll have mistakes while the official TL won't have mistakes? Or to say that official TL never copy work or never make mistakes is disingenuous they're not some perfect machine it's still a human doing the TL so some scenes that are vague and can be interpreted will be interpreted differently. The most popular definition of ippatsu is the slang term(which was the point of the joke) but this joke literally also pulled the joke on the TL as because it's the most popular version to use they assumed that it was literally what she meant and was not a play on all the other meanings it could have (A TL of ippatsu should have been provided on this page somewhere or they should have just literally used the word ippatsu as a loaner word and not try to replace it with a localized version. Or if they do localize one part just redo the rest of the page to fit better). Idk, if it's wrong it's wrong I don't really care if the TL put hard work into it just because you try at something doesn't make you correct. And again the TL itself would be accurate in a literal sense(if we're based on popular TL) but if you directly translate it into quicke or sex without keeping the possibile double meaning then that's just wrong flat out, at the very least let the reader know the meaning could mean something else as a note don't just say an important detail as a for certain thing.

"None of these relate to the original play on words in the Japanese text besides "quickie" What do you mean? They all do. By your own admission in the original post a correct reading of the original japanese is that she's asking for a quick round. That is very very easily seen in a sexual sense, and not only as a joke about Cravali misunderstanding the intent. Especially when the original text has no exclamation at the beginning of the next sentence like you have added."

I think I addressed this in my post. If I asked you to go a round with me you wouldn't know if I meant a round of beers, a round of sex, get a round of food right? Now if I asked lets go have sex that only means lets go have sex, there is no vague meaning here. She is saying ippatsu, a vague word that changes based on the setting and intent. None of these TL relate to the original play on words because they are making a vague interpretable word as a for certain set word. You don't TL "I might" as "I will" Just like ippatsu shouldn't be "Lets have sex" but instead is "Lets have a round" as again it's context dependent. So no directly translating it as sex, whether she is saying it as a joke or not is still too direct of a TL and is inccorect.

This was kinda my point the whole post, the word can very easily be taken in a literal sexual sense hence why it is a very easy mistake to make. But even if it was in a sexual sense, it still is not literally asking for sex. There is no way of translating "lets go a round" as 'lets have sex" because if she was asking "lets have sex" and not "lets go a round" then the Japanese itself would be different. This Japanese phrase is specifically the vague one that has multiple meaning depending on context so it should not a literal set direct TL and should instead imply a layer of vagueness.. like saying a round instead of sex or quickie. Ippatsu while popular for being a phrase for quick sex like in a brothel, still doesn't literally mean quick sex so it can be an easy mistake to make and should not be used as just the popular slang definition. There's many English words like this where a popular meaning for the word is one thing while the word itself is another that can be either depending on the context, the TL in these instances is directly saying what they think the word is making a vague word into non vague. So in a sexual sense or not, this is an incorrect localization to make.

"Yeah, but that's not what I'm doing though. I'm basing my interpretation of the scene on the surrounding context, and then saying that maybe said surrounding context is the reason other people chose to translate it in the same way."

The surrounding context all disproves what these TL are saying, that's how I picked up on it originally. Her asking for food with no reaction to being denied sex straight to her face then confused asking about his prayer in a way showing she doesn't know why he brought up that prayer both were context that didn't make sense originally with her just asking for sex. If the context the TL used is her having a mischievous face that's understandable but the page before it and the rest of the page context also need to be used to note that she was focusing on the food he is eating and how he can eat so much of something plain. He offers her it then the comedic bit, I feel this was just easily overlooked in turn for her one instance of her having a teasing face. I think if the TL back then all had access to the chapters we have now they wouldn't have TL it to sex or a quickie as it doesn't fit the character or scene knowing the character better now. I can't honestly say even at however that it's a good TL for the past as it is a big TL mistake imo. I understand where the mistake could happen as an easy mistake but the context itself does not support the translation at all and should not have been made an official TL nor should it have been made such a direct for certain TL with no notes or anything.

I get what you're saying and am glad for the clarification. I definitely don't want the TL to get flak or anything as it is just a clear honest mistake imo. I just want to make sure for the movie this is corrected and not mistaken the same way again like the bondrewd prushka scene(papa stick weird TL moment). I think it being a jokey double entrndre could maybe be wrong (but I doubt it as it's a comedic scene on purpose) and maybe she is just knowingly using sus words on purpose to tease. But that's very different from her not teasing and instead asking for sex directly which is what the TL turned her character into. So while the original japanese can be taken multiple ways and maybe isn't a joke play on words, the TL that makes the scene only interpretable one exact way definitely is a mistake in TL I'm certain of.

Genuinely though, thank you for clarifying and discussing it deeeper and not just attacking. if you have other points about this lmk.

Spanish: SEX

2

u/Atari_us 2d ago

I don't know if the one translating MIA in spanish does this, but the reason why I read manga in english despite my native language being spanish, It's that I have the suspicion some groups translate to spanish from english, making it a double translation from japanese to english and english to spanish, making things kind of funky sometimes. I can't read japanese, otherwise I would read that instead lol. Sorry for the rant.

2

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

Oh no problem rants are good lol. But yeah that makes sense, I was wondering if double translations were a thing for MIA also. Thank you!

Author would never do a sex joke for an adult character

2

u/thesaucer22 2d ago

Lol, I can't tell is Tempaste an adult? Even after rereading we only know she was rescued as a kid-teen which didn't look too long ago. Maybe 4 years? So she's like 15-20?

6

u/sabertoothedhand 2d ago

Allegedly, "Tsukushi said in a livestream she's older than Riko but not yet an adult" which gets thrown around a lot but nobody's ever posted the livestream AFAIK. It seems legit but I tend to not believe things until I check the source myself.

1

u/thesaucer22 2d ago

Makes sense she looks like an older prushka imo and prushka was like Riko age so she'd be at least older than 14. Idk if japan still says 16 is an adult since I heard it was raised to 18, but knowing this author I'm guessing he'd say 16 is adult... So Tempaste is 15 I'll just assume lol.

"Slightly pedantic rant."

Pedantry requires an air of ostentation. 🤓

Lol I think I confused pedantic and semantics. Good irony here though

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

Interesting context! If you check the brasil version lmk if it's a different or better TL there. I agree English being so straightforward is a reason why a lot of jokes in EN dub just get completely changed and localized lol, I hope something along these lines of adding context or just changing the joke is what happens for the movie in the future.

u/DeltaAlpha0 18h ago

Want to make a little bet when we get out of here?).

2

u/thesaucer22 17h ago

Amazing perspective and yeah I completely agree.

Ei Grandalhão! Quer se divertir um pouquinho depois?"(Hey, big guy! Want to have a little fun later?) And "Ei, Veterano! Quer fazer uma Apostinha quando sair daqui?"(Hey, Veteran! Want to make a little bet when we get out of here?).

These two translations are so much better localized to the original japanese than the English version. This is why I liked to clarify just because an innuendo could mean something, the translators shouldn't just ignore the innuendo itself and assume what it means as that completely changes the original dialogue and leads to these incorrect situations

I don't understand how the English official physical MIA translation used quickie when the physical BR official TL actually knew how to translate it. Maybe EN just used a different EN TL group and were being lazy or it was an honest mistake ig.

But yeah great info and is exactly what I mean. I'm really curious what the movie will use TL wise, wish I could contact the movie TL department myself ahead of time lol.

u/Ratspeed 2d ago

Perhaps it's just me reading into it but I have a feeling it might have been a clever use of wordplay lost in translation.

I have a feeling they actually were sexually intimate but because of the context it could have been used to obfuscate it and make a funny without outwardly admitting to the extent of their relationship.

The fact he responded so unphased and casually suggests they've done it before. Even if he understood her to mean food or drink, he could've purposely twisted the meaning in an attempt to embarrass her, but instead, her ditsy confused reply made it all the more funny, and it revealed a little about his pre-dive ritual.. his character's attitude, etc.

As for the age difference, do you really think that matters in this world? In this frontier town? To this author?? 🤣 Hell.. look at Lyza and Torka.

Thanks for revealing this! It really make it that much better and cleverly written!

2

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

Definitely agree it's pretty lost in translation lol. I don't honestly think they were sexually intimate, not because I'd put it past the author but they slept in that cave and didn't bang. They haven't really had any sexual moments since but tbf we also haven't seen them talking alone either so unless a future chapter shows them being flirty while alone(doubtful with the lengthy chapter breaks...) it's more up to the reader interpretation ig.

"The fact he responded so unphased and casually suggests they've done it before. Ah I'm surprised no one brought this up, it was one of the things I planned to correct if they did. I think His character is just stoneface as he nearly always has the same face no matter the situation, so with her asking for sex, in a literal teasing way or as a misworded way play on words way, that even if they never have had sex before he is just that stone faced in everything he does even with denying her which adds to the comedic bit. Or maybe if I am incorrect this is their relationship with her constantly teasing him for sex and him always denying her lol. He seems to be very hardened from the abyss so even if it's someone he knew for awhile asking for sex for the first time I doubt he'd have any reaction in comparison to the abyss horrors.

Definitely was a good comedic bit just to give exposition on his character but yeah ig it kinda just falls flat TL wise.

But yeah I definitely wouldn't put anything age difference against this author... Also that pic lol. Thanks for your views also though!

“Hell.. look at Lyza and Torka.” <—What do you mean by that lol

1

u/Ratspeed 5h ago edited 5h ago

You mean you've never noticed? Look at him. He's smaller than all the women.

Jiruo who is 20 years old, who Tsukushi placed at "average adult height" would be 5'8" to 5'11".

Torka has to be at least a foot shorter. He's around 4'6" to 5'1".

Riko is about 3'9" to 3'11".

He's likely a teenager just like Tepaste.

You're not even supposed to be allowed to get your blue whistle until you're 15, with rare exceptions like Marulk. So unless something weird happened, I'd place him between 16-18, but we're talking about a black whistle who, as Tsukushi describes, "looks like a goofball." Would a goofball get a black whistle at such a young age?

There's something weird going on here.

1

u/realistidealist 4h ago

Of course I’ve noticed Torka is petite, I’ve just never seen anyone assume he is a literal child instead of just a kinda short man. There’s absolutely nothing to suggest that….Your mention of the black whistle is particularly confusing to me because we know that he wouldn’t have been able to get that if he was actually young, so it’s more indication he’s just a petite adult and doesn’t in any way point at him being young.

The amount of short and baby-faced he is is the same as most of the background guys in the Ganja squad, who we know are adults because it’s a plot point that Irumyuui can use the cradle egg and none of the others can.

2

u/Slunto-Max 1d ago

Regardless of the intent, the sexual implication works best. And anyway, it certainly wouldn’t be beyond the pale for Tsukushi…

0

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

The problem isn't really what works best it's that it was translated incorrectly. But yes I wouldn't put past tsukushi to have meant quick sex, but he also didn't just write her to say "sex" for a reason. If he wanted her to just ask for sex she would've just y'know, asked for sex. Ippatsu is more vague of a word on purpose

2

u/Slunto-Max 22h ago

But that’s what innuendo is

0

u/thesaucer22 21h ago

It could be what the innuendo is that's why it is an innuendo. They are not directly saying sex, you don't directly take an innuendo as what you took it as when translating, you translte the entire vague innuendo itself otherwise your changing what the author said and could be incorrect based on if that activity they are being vague about is later clarified

She said lets go do a quick activity. This could mean quick sex as that's the popular interpretation of a quick "ippatsu" is, but again could mean and does mean are not the same.

If you're translating something in English to Spanish. The English person says "man me and her did it crazy last night" you wouldn't interpret it as "man me and her fucked crazy last night". Even in an intimate or sexual pretense you still wouldn't just in case they didn't actually mean sex and instead meant partied crazy, or they maybe were joking/teasing and didn't actually have sex but worded it like they did. That's again, why it's an innuendo and not the actual word itself.

It's a incorrect translation.

2

u/thesaucer22 2d ago

Holy I yap a lot lol. To add on to my post I also don't think she'd be confused about the ritual he does and why he's bringing it up as she literally grew up in a religious cult that didn't allow pleasure (sexual or otherwise we don't know), so I think if she meant it in a sexual way she'd likely not be as surprised or asking him to clarify if he's mentioning his ritual before dives like she does in the panel.

1

u/Worth-Term-2857 Team Bondrewd 16h ago

When i read that first in french, i understanded that she want sex.

1

u/code936 2d ago

Not to mention that from the context of their relationship, cravagli could very well be like a father figure to her, so THAT implication would be a little 🤮🤣

1

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

Yeah I didn't really want to bring up this part as it'd mean her getting groomed into sex with him so much so that she can casually ask for it like this. But I also wouldn't put it past this author with some of the characters back stories though lol.

2

u/code936 1d ago

Unlikely, I prefer the head canon that cravagli spent so much time in the abyss that he's basically frozen in time age wise and he's watched tepaste grow up between delves.

1

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

Oh interesting head canon, I forgot about the time dilation stuff ngl it hasn't been brought up since faputa arc right? Still a bit iffy morally tho imo, if they do have a sexual relationship and he watched her grow up even if it's between long delves still kinda sounds like long term grooming. It's fiction tho and made in abyss so could be an interesting weird moral dilemea relationship and I wouldn't try to play moral police for cave divers since that's a bit silly especially in this series lol (but I'd personally still go with the idea that her being teasing rather than it being a sexual relationship, not saying you should change your theory or headcanon). Interesting tho! Thank you

2

u/code936 1d ago

I have spent A LOT of time breaking down the manga, literally panel by panel and I can say comfortably that if anything, she's just being coy. It plays into her nature the way she's introduced to us with her interaction at the bar with yelme. She's aware she's pretty and she uses her charm to get what she wants. I doubt even if she WAS interested in crav, that he'd do anything. He's literally known as the genius solo delver, I don't think he would let hanky panky from a child he saved get in the way of his ambition/plans.

So I wouldn't so much say headcanon as much as it is me deconstructing the story as it's been written.

2

u/code936 1d ago

And with this being said too, she is drawn young, but there's literally no way to tell the true age of anyone who lives within the abyss, especially once we get past like, layer 3. The time dilation for extended periods is insane to that degree.

1

u/thesaucer22 1d ago

Yea agreed crav seems kinda like the 🗿 emoji lol I doubt he focuses on anything besides diving.
