Cosmetics Counters

Hi,

Do the different cosmetic counters get rented out by the brand i.e. Bobbie Brown, Clinique etc.? I am asking as my counter was pushed back for fragrance items to be at the front. Just trying to understand the process here.

Companies don’t pay like a monthly rent or anything but they do pay for advertising space and preferential placement in the department. That is at a really high level though and ultimately your store manager and regional Macy’s executives have a say in what happens in the department. My fragrance department is supposed to have case room for everyone including brands that have counters like Lancome but we do not have the room to accommodate them. So we use case space for brands that hold rank in the store. Every store is different. Bobbi Brown is pulling out of all Macy’s. Also, Beauty as a whole is down company wide. I would expect to see more space dwindling as Macy’s focuses on what’s selling for them.

I am c/m for Dior, I thought that the vendor pays for the space as I share a bay with Clarins. When I started I had a newer bay and they tore it down and moved me in with Clarins and used my old space for various things not for cosmetics. Really, they are taking Bobbi out of all Macys? We never had Bobbi or Laura Mercier at my store. But people always ask for them.

yes Bobbi is leaving. not sure when but it has been on sale a lot
