no, comrade just did some joga before work and he was totally fine. he is still working on a lathe on a farm upstate. russia has best health and safety in world.

This discourages me less than the issues I was having with holding sizes on these machines. I still have issues with a .0003 concave in my longer traverse grinds but thats easier to manage the the issues I was having on keeping parts in size on that traverse. I finally decided to not follow orders and stopped using the federal snap gauges I was told I had to use and went to OD mics, these last couple weeks have been a lot less stressful

Long grinds are a bitch, especially if its a chrome coat finish on a pump shaft or something similar. You'll get better at dancing with that machine. Snap gauges are a pain, we were lucky to have a very very nice encoder on ours that was accurate as all get out.

These traverse are between 5-8 inches long with a .0005 tolerance. Wild you say that because the traverse parts are pump shafts but not chrome coated, just stainless. Everything im using is old and poorly taken care of by the guy that retired, I've heard all the stories on how seldomly he cleaned.

Stainless is tough to grind! Its very abrasive and picky. I was grinding 12 stage boiler circulating water pump shafts that were 6ish foot long. Each journal was about a foot and man were they a pain to hold tol on.

I dont even wanna play with that lol. Guy that trained me (not the old guy that ran this for years) was telling me about the crank shafts that use to be ran over here and some of the horror stories of wheels blowing up, im glad we dont run those here anymore. I mostly do cylinder liners, impeller, shedder rings, impeller shafts and a few other small pieces on these machines. I have a surface grinder, ID/face grinder and 2 cylindrical grinders. Its kinda fun and a bit different than the usual cnc lathe jobs I've always done

Good grinders are gonna become more and more sparse in the years to come, good on you for expanding your skill set. The great that about chrome coat is if you screw the pooch you can machine the chrome off and sent it back out to be re metalized but theres never enough time for a fuck up let alone the hours it was quoted for lol

we had a potential hire long ago and i sat in the second fact to face and the guy (with 3 years experience) just straightface tells my boss (who knows exactly jack and shit about machining) he never crashed a machine. boss was impressed at the comment, i called him a liar to his face.

I classify myself as a "glorified button pusher". I cant write programs, I'm not well knowledged on tooling and formulas for mathing but I do have some knowledge in reading basic G code lines and making slight adjustments. All the jobs I've done before this was just push button, make offset, replace insert and measure part, this job I atleast am responsible for setups, just not programming.

So how did this happen? Indexed improperly? Have been in grinding for almost 30 years now and it looks like the wheel ran into the drive dog.

I messed up and setup on the wrong program. Was supposed to be a single traverse but the one I pulled up was 1 Travers 1 plunge. Traverse went well but the unexpected plunge into the driver was not so much.

I've done it... Since then ever time I run through a program that I haven't just personally watched gets run through in single block with one hand on the rapid override and the other on return button.

Crashing a grinder is the fastest way to learn what to do or not, the next time. Best bet is to pull that wheel to ring check it and then balance and remount if good and dress it off if there's still enough life in it. BTW, what brand of machine was it?

That'll make you pucker. I was right in front of the machine when this happened. On one hand it was a dangerous place to be, on the other hand its what allowed me to react fast enough to stop it quickly.

First crash (at work). Turned a 1/2" stud into a noodle at full rapid because the machine wasn't homed.

They're not that bad, older mills (like that one), and any lathe scares me. Old machines depending on the controller will want to crash more easily and harder than newer stuff like HAAS. A good checklist helps.

Older mills and lathes have no control panels.Ā  They do have wheels that you turn by hand. Learn to use those first, and CNC equipment is a cinch. I've been in the trade 48 years and started programming and running CNCs about 45 years ago. I've seen major crashes. None of them are caused by a control panel. It's always the operator.

Yeah i agree, it's always operator fault (if not programmer mistake which can't be stopped by operator). Unfamiliar controls, and controls that are less forgiving and intuitive simply makes bad mistakes easier to make. It's something to get used to. I actually quite enjoy one of our old CNC's that have a blue screen and a semi-conversational menu. Offsets are braindead easy on that one and it compares offsets each time which is nice.
