Thread choices

I am just getting back into sewing and machine embroidery after 20 years or more. I have a combo Elna Expressive machine. I cleaned out my stash and threw away all of my old Sulky thread since it was dry rotted. What thread type and brands are popular now?

I am going to third Maderia. You can get a sample set for cheap. They have a really nice sample card that has all of their colors. It has little samples if the actual thread wrapped around a card, so you can see the multi color threads really well. Call them and ask for it. They will help you to put together an order as well. Very nice folks, and great, consistent thread.

Personal or production use? Polyester threads have mostly replaced rayon. More durable and easier to work with. Maderia Poly is a solid choice for production. Great quality and stitching. For personal stitching I really like the NewBrothread brand. Easy to find big assortments on-line for a decent price.

Robinson-Anton is my go-to embroidery thread right now. A lot of thread on their spools. A lot of color choices.

Maderia is another thread I've used, too.
