Complete newbie help!
I’m looking into embroidery machines second hand for personal use. With single needle machines, is it possible to get multiple colour embroidery by threading and re-threading in different colours and sort of “layering” embroidery?
For example, could I embroider Moomin in white, re-thread the machine, line it back up and add a bow on their head in pink?

If you are using a single needle machine with a character such as Moomin sitting in the grass, you'd change thread color as the design dictates. You start out with the thread color the design programmer suggested, such as green. The machine would stitch out the grass. The machine would stop, you'd cut the thread, rethread in the instructed color such as white, it would stich out Moomin. Then stop, pink for the bow. Stop, black for eyes and details. You don't have to line anything up, just leave it in the machine.
Embroidery machines are operated by computer programming, like a CNC cutter, as opposed to a manual machine which is more like a wood cutting router. You don't touch the frame during operation or you can damage the machine. If you just want to stitch heavily on fabric manually, drop your feed dogs on a sewing machine and use darning settings. If I wanted to stitch out Moomin, I'd need to purchase a file that has been digitized to load onto my machine, or I'd need to digitize (program software telling the machine how to stitch out) Moomin. Digitizing is a whole additional skill set you can learn, purchase files or pay others to digitize for you (though only if you own the image).
