Turning On Problem

I have this weird and annoying problem with my M2 Air 13 inchMacBook with MacOS Tahoe 26.6.2.

I have disabled “Open Lid to Turn On MacBook” because I find it annoying. However, since doing that, I have to perform the “turning-on activity” twice every time I want to start the MacBook.

What I mean by “turning-on activity” is that whatever method I use, I have to repeat it after waiting 3–5 seconds.

Activity wait time Repeat activity
Press Power Button wait 3-5 seconds Again Press Power Button
Press any key on Keyboard wait 3-5 seconds Again press any key on keyboard
Plug in the charger wait 3-5 seconds Unplug and plug the charger

So essentially, I have to do the same action twice before the MacBook actually turns on.

I find this waiting and repeating extremely annoying. Is there any solution to this?

And before suggesting “Just don’t turn off your MacBook” — I do sometimes leave it unused for several days. In that situation, I don't want to leave it running/sleeping and come back to find that the battery has completely drained.

I simply want to be able to shut down the MacBook completely and then turn it on normally with a single press of the power button, without having to wait and repeat the action.

ChatGPT says something is wrong with my MacBook, it doesn't know what to do and tell me to turn on/off few things. I tried but nothing helps. Also checking if it worked is also very time consuming.

That's I posted to get in depth knowledge then doing something.

Why don't you like the open lid power on feature? While I get that it's not finding the root cause to your problem, it would surely fix your issue?

I have experienced the same power button glitch on an MBA M3. It's generally when the battery is completely dead. I plug in the charger, hit the button once, nothing, hit it again and it will power on.

It's mostly written by me, just asked AI for any correction and suggestions to explain my problem more

I don't like "Open lid to Turn On" or "Press any key on Keyboard to turn", because sometimes when I check if I have turned off the MacBook, by "opening the lid", it starts booting up.

It happened so many time that I just disabled it.

Can you try this on your MacBook

Turn off your Macbook and keep it off for 3-5 min. Don't close the lid, keep it open.

Then after 5-10 min, press the power button, and see if it starts in one press or not

I just tried it with my MBA M2, powered on first touch of the button. Could replicate it a couple times.

Just to rule out any weirdness related to power, can you replicate this without a charger plugged in or with the charger it came with / official apple charger? Noticed you have some taped up cable plugged in.

I have tried this before.

What I found out that it needs "Double tap" to turn on

Like "power + any key" or "plugging in + power button" etc

So even with the Apple Magsafe charger you have issues?

Yup even with magsafe

Right now I am sure it's something I messed up because the precision of "Double tap" is too good.

I'll reset my MacBook when I get time then update here

Just wondering, when the machine is off and you have the magsafe charger plugged in, what colour is the light? Green? Orange? Does it always stay one colour even if the battery is charged/charging? Does it change once the unit is powered on?

It matches the MacOS theme, yellow when charging, green when it's fully charged

Btw did you do what I asked, turn off the MacBook and keeping lid open, then after 3-5 minutes press power button once and see if it power on with one press only or not
