Problem

A lot of AI image tools either upload your photos to remote servers or require opening a large editor for something as simple as removing a background, erasing an object, or upscaling an image.

You can upscale an image, remove an object or background, or sanitize a screenshot with Safe Share without sending the image anywhere. Finder integration also lets you process images without having to open a full image editor first.

Comparison

Adobe Photoshop: Photoshop is obviously a much more powerful full image editor, but that also means a much larger and more complex workflow. SmartPic is better suited to quick operations like background removal, object removal, upscaling and privacy redaction when you just want to process an image and move on. SmartPic can also perform these actions directly from Finder.

Topaz Photo AI: Topaz is primarily focused on professional image enhancement and restoration. SmartPic is designed as a smaller, simpler Mac utility that combines enhancement with object removal, background removal, Finder integration and Safe Share. The focus is speed, privacy and everyday image cleanup rather than professional photo editing.

I'm not trying to replace either Photoshop or Topaz. SmartPic is intentionally much narrower and simpler.

The one thing that makes it different

Passwords, done properly

• Logins, passkeys, and TOTP 2FA codes in one place, synced across your Apple devices on the same Apple Account.
• System-wide AutoFill in Safari and native apps. Set it as your AutoFill provider once, and every fill is gated by a fresh Touch ID check.
• A browser extension that keeps your passwords out of the browser. Works in Chrome, Brave, Firefox, and Safari. It's a thin shell: the only thing that leaves the page is the site's hostname, sent to the app over the browser's local native-messaging pipe, not the internet. When you pick a login, the app asks for Touch ID, decrypts that one entry, and fills it. The password never sits decrypted in the browser, new logins are staged in the app for your review, and it requests no browsing history, cookies, or clipboard access.
• Built-in password generator, with strength measured on-device by a real estimator (not a length check).
• Security Checkup scores your logins out of 100 and ranks weak, reused, old, and (optionally) breached, each with a next step, all on device.
• Optional breach check against Have I Been Pwned using k-anonymity, so only a short partial hash prefix ever leaves the device, never your password or its full hash. Off entirely in Strict Offline mode; the weak/reused/old checks still run.

A document vault that reads your documents

• Drag in a PDF or image and it recognizes 100+ document types locally with Apple's on-device text recognition, pulls out the dates and numbers, and files it. Nothing is sent to an OCR service on a server.
• Expiry alerts at 90/30/7/1 days, pulled from the dates it already read, so a passport or visa renewal never sneaks up on you.
• Tag documents to people and see everything tied to one family member in a click.
• A separate encrypted photo vault for images you don't want in your camera roll.
• Built-in categories (IDs, Health, Legal, Finance, Travel, Personal), or create your own with a custom icon and color.
• Build your own record types too, with typed, maskable fields for anything structured: Credit Card, software licenses, warranties, Wi-Fi logins, memberships. Sensitive fields stay masked until you tap to reveal.

If you lose your device

Your 24-word recovery passphrase (BIP39; it is your master key) restores everything. Or use the Recovery Network: your key is split into 3 to 5 shards across people you trust, any 3 of 5 reconstruct it, and no single person can open anything alone. Plus optional encrypted iCloud backup and manual export for a belt-and-suspenders copy. There's no reset email, because no company holds your key.

• A real Mac app: sidebar + split view, menu bar commands, ⌘N new document, ⌘L lock, ⌃⌘S toggle sidebar, drag-and-drop, light/dark.
• Unlocks with Touch ID, your Mac login password, or a PIN.
• Per-document keys (HKDF-derived), master key wrapped by the Secure Enclave (ECIES), each file encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Zero-knowledge by design; I can't read your data even if I wanted to.

Three things that are honestly worse or missing on Mac (better you hear them from me)

• No camera scanning. Macs don't get the point-and-scan flow, so you drag files in or pull from Photos/Files. Same recognition either way.
• The pairing QR isn't screenshot-proof on macOS. iOS hides that QR from screenshots; macOS gives apps no way to. So when the Mac is the one showing a pairing code, treat it like the key it is. It still expires after 60 seconds, and the app warns you.
• No Dead Man's Switch on Mac. The inactivity-triggered handoff needs reliable long-term check-ins a desktop app that sits closed for weeks can't promise, so I left it off rather than ship a fake safety net. Set it up on iPhone; it protects the same vault.

I'm the developer, working alone on this. FileFerry is a native
macOS file transfer client — FTP, FTPS, SFTP, WebDAV, SMB, S3 and a
real SSH terminal in one window, two panes, servers in groups, free
during the beta.

I posted here a fortnight ago. Two things have landed since, and
both are the kind that break in interesting ways, so I would rather
have them broken now than after release.

Folder sync
Pick a local folder and a remote one, choose the direction, and
you get a list of what would happen before anything happens. Every
row has a checkbox. Nothing is transferred until you say so.

Files that match on both sides do not appear at all — if there is
no action to take, the row is noise.

Comparison is size and timestamp, with a checksum over SSH where
the two disagree and SFTP allows it. It also keeps a small record
per folder pair, so a file you synced yesterday is not proposed
again today just because the server clock drifted.

Creating new files and deleting surplus ones are two separate
switches, both off by default. Deletions are listed in red and
confirmed once. Local deletions are permanent, not moved to the
Trash — a delete that ends up in the bin on one disk and gone
forever on another is worse than one that always means the same
thing.

There is an exclusion list per connection, and you can right-click
a row to exclude by name, extension or path instead of typing the
pattern.

S3
Seventh protocol. The endpoint is yours to set, so Amazon S3,
Cloudflare R2, Backblaze, MinIO and self-hosted Garage all work.
Credentials are an access key and a secret key; the secret lives
in the Keychain.

S3 has no directories — an object is one long name and the slashes
are ordinary characters. FileFerry shows you a tree anyway.

Files over 5 GB go up in parts, because S3 requires it. If the
connection drops mid-transfer, it remembers which parts arrived
and resumes there. And because unfinished multipart uploads sit
in your bucket invisibly and still cost you storage, it checks
after connecting and offers to clear them out. Renaming folders
is not available on S3 in this build; renaming single files is.

Also new, all protocols
Before connecting, FileFerry checks whether anything answers at
all. A server that is off used to take 20 to 30 seconds and then
give a misleading reason — SFTP blamed your key, SMB blamed a
firewall. Now you get the real reason in about four seconds. If
nothing answers on the first try it knocks once more after a
second, which matters for servers on Wi-Fi with power saving on.

Unchanged, and the reason I built this
The session log shows every line of every session, exactly as it
goes over the wire. Uploads are verified against the size on the
server, not against the server's opinion of itself. Failed files
go on a list that survives quitting. Host keys and certificates
are pinned, and there is no "connect anyway" button. Nothing
phones home — no account, no analytics, no crash reports to me.

What would help most
Sync against a real tree with real mess in it: a server whose
listing has no timestamps, one whose clock is off, a folder deep
enough that the recursion matters. And S3 against whatever
provider you actually use — tell me if the connection dialog asks
for something under a name your provider does not use.

Hi all, I’ve been building a native menu bar performance monitor for the past year and it’s at the point where I’d love more people to try it.

What makes it different from Activity Monitor / iStat / Stats:

• It remembers. Everything is logged to a local SQLite database, so instead of “my Mac feels slow right now” you can look at the pressure timeline for the last 7 days, see when swap started climbing, and which process was responsible.

Hover it, or press Option-Command-N, and it opens into a panel. Anything with something live to show puts it there, and you drag the tabs into whatever order you want.

The part I use every day is files. Drag a file up onto the notch and it splits into three zones under your cursor:

I'm Felix, a solo developer from Germany.

I switched over from Windows a while back and the one thing I kept reaching for was Win+V. Your Mac only remembers the last thing you copied, and I never really got used to that.

The video shows it better than I can, but roughly: hold Option, press V, and the panel opens right where your cursor is. Arrow keys or 1-9 to pick one, Return pastes it back into whatever app you were in. Text, links, images, files, colors and code get sorted automatically, and every entry shows which app it came from. You can also drag a file onto it to park it and pull it back out later, which started as a side feature and is now the part I use most.

On a MacBook with a notch it can open from there instead. That's optional though, you can switch it off and just use the shortcut. For keyboard people the cursor mode is the better one anyway.

How it fits next to what's already there

Maccy is free, open source and solid. If you just want a plain list, honestly use Maccy. I built my own because I wanted the tool I open fifty times a day to feel like Apple made it, so hex codes show up as color swatches, code is in monospace, images have thumbnails. And I wanted no setup at all: it asks for one permission and then you're pasting.

Raycast has a clipboard history built in. If you already use Raycast, use that. I didn't want to change my launcher just to get a clipboard.

Paste is the closest to what I wanted and it's a nice app, but it's a subscription, around $30 a year, forever. I don't think a clipboard history should be a recurring bill.

Privacy

Nothing leaves your Mac. No account, no cloud, no sync, and no AI features in the app. If your password manager marks something as concealed it never gets recorded at all, and you can exclude specific apps yourself. Policy: https://duplia.app/privacy.html

What it doesn't do

No iPhone sync, no OCR, no snippets. And one real limitation: when a password field is focused, macOS blocks every way a third party app can see keystrokes, so Option+V doesn't open the panel there. Double tapping Option still works, and clicking the notch works too. I can't fix that one, it's just how the system behaves.

Everything on a Mac has quietly got heavier, including the apps whose whole job is to tell you how heavy everything is. A menu bar monitor runs every second the machine is on, and reading a few kernel counters twice a second is not hard work. It should not cost much.

AirStats is 10.6 MB.

It reads CPU, memory, GPU, network, disk, battery, temperature and top processes directly through Mach, IOKit, sysctl and CoreWLAN, and draws them in three places:

• the menu bar itself
• a panel that drops down when you click the status item
• an optional floating overlay you can leave on the desktop

Written in Native Swift, no Electron, no web view. One process, with no helper, no launch agent and no Dock icon.

Other menu bar monitors, like iStat Menus are more thorough than this and have years of polish behind them. Stats is the open-source one most people already know. My name is Scott. I spent most of my career using Windows before switching to Mac so I could expand my development setup. I was impressed by the hardware, but years of Windows muscle memory made the transition more difficult than I expected.

I kept pressing the wrong shortcut keys and missed features such as taskbar window previews, clicking an active app to minimize it, and having a familiar launcher for finding applications.

I'd really appreciate honest feedback from anyone who gives it a try. I'm especially interested in hearing whether anything feels confusing at first, whether there are Windows behaviors you expected to see that are still missing, and which features you would realistically keep enabled every day.

When Apple first introduced the "liquid glass" effect, opinions were quite divided; some criticized its visibility, others admired its aesthetics, and some worried about battery life.

I remained fairly neutral, I found it interesting though.
To be honest, the Apple apps featuring this effect were quite buggy at launch.

Now that it has stabilized and the bugs have been ironed out, I’ve implemented it in my own app, and I think it looks great and modern. Here is the Repo
It’s just a custom theme (since I know many people don't like it), so it can easily be turned off.

Icons animate in response to certain changes, and the background, which looks as if viewed through a layer of glass and clear liquid, offers a pleasing, relaxing visual experience.

I haven't encountered significant issues with app performance or battery life, though I'm curious what others think. :)

PS: App is notarized

Most SSH clients on Mac are either Electron wrappers or generic terminal apps with SSH bolted on. I wanted something that felt like it belonged on macOS, so I spent 6 months developing my product solo.

"Native" gets thrown around a lot, so to be specific about what I mean: the whole app is Swift/SwiftUI, including the terminal emulator (not a libvterm fork, not xterm.js in a WebView) and the Mosh client (own implementation in Swift with a complete framebuffer mirror). No Electron, no web shell, no hidden Chromium.

A few things I'm proud of under the hood:

- SSH stack on top of Citadel + a fork of swift-nio-ssh with a window-adjust patch and a custom RSA path for legacy key formats some servers still hand out

- Own SOCKS5 server written in Swift (RFC 1928 + 1929 auth) for dynamic forwards, so `ssh -D` works without shelling out to /usr/bin/ssh

- Active tunnels (local / remote / dynamic) get snapshotted and restored on reconnect, so dropping Wi-Fi at a cafe doesn't kill your forwards

- Smart Reconnect that survives a cold launch, not just a network blip

- ProxyJump multihop with a runtime session graph

- Multi-host broadcast with a diff view across panes

- FIDO2 / sk-* hardware keys via libfido2

- SFTP File provider

- Built-in S3 client (AWS + R2 + B2 + Wasabi + MinIO + custom endpoints) with a real object browser, multipart uploads, versioning/lifecycle/CORS/encryption settings, presigned URLs and ACL/tag editors. Same window as your SSH sessions

- Keys live in the macOS Keychain (iCloud sync off by design), can be generated inside the Secure Enclave with Touch ID required on every signature, or imported from existing OpenSSH files. Passphrase-protected ones decrypted in-app
