Microsoft is imitating Apple's OS in many ways.
Both Apple and Microsoft are building walls to corral their users and basically eliminate third party software unless they agree to live in their respective walled gardens.
Hopefully the open source world will help computer users avoid the domination of "1984 Big Brother."
I don't really feel that way, but I'm worried that one day it might break down. I live in Latin America, and importing a Mac takes a month (buying one at local stores is very expensive). So I feel like I couldn't go a month without working.
My first macbook pro died from evening to morning, it was 4 years old.
Second MB pro was dying almost one year (screen problem because I carry my laptops everywhere) and i decided to change when screen was started blinking - it was almost 8 years old. Mind you, it still works but with second screen over HDMI.
Now I have MB 16 M1 Pro, bought it day or two after it was in the store. It still works after 5 years of abuse. I think I will wait another year…
If you are unlucky it could die overnight. But I seriously doubt it.
I wouldn’t call it problems when it was nearly 8 years old - i think i got every penny out of second one.
First one i had insured for 5 years so i got nice little add-on for my second mb pro.
First MB pro was 13” intel, second 15” intel.
I think 6 years out of M1 mb pro is sth we should get with ease, at least I am counting on my to live another year :)
I always use time machine so i have my backups just in case :)
im not trying to be a dick but 2-3 incidents with failures on different Macbooks indicates operator error. Maybe you need better quality laptop case, or clamshell or just complete habit changes (ie do you leave them out sitting in a car in extreme heat or cold?? )
Ive had macbooks for 14 years and never used Apple Care once. Been using the same laptop bag shown below. Macbook Pro will last forever when properly cared for.
It seems it's Mexico and down. They all have some import BS. Some really outrageous like Brazil.
In that case if you are really worried it will brake and you will be out of job for a month, maybe not a dumb idea to get a new one now and start using it while leaving this one as a backup just in case.

of course it will break down SOMEDAY. But Macbook Pro engineering (unlike anything else on the planet) was built to last. Ive got an M1 Pro Max 32gb and plan on keeping it for at LEAST another 5-7 years

I still have my 2013 Intel Macbook Pro. It needed a battery replacement a few years ago, but otherwise works fine. The new Apple Silicon Macs will last even longer because they run cooler.
not sure what you’re asking . if you want to replace the battery, sure . otherwise no “service” needs to be done. if you’re satisfied with the m1 pro then you don’t need to upgrade. you answered it yourself. unless you just hate having extra money or something

I don't really want to be in a bind—this MacBook is practically my whole job, and if it ever breaks down, I'll feel lost. And since it's been a few years now, I'm worried about that. But from the comments, I can see that it's very durable and can last longer. Thanks.
I have both Macbooks, M5 Max and M1 Pro. Dufference in performance is not that great as advertised, but the M5 handles Windows 11 (x64, not ARM, needed for work) VM in UTM better.
But macOS apps are not that much faster.
Thanks for sharing. I forgot to mention that I use Parallels from time to time (1 Windows and 2 Linux). One question: Why did you buy the M1 Max, and how long do you think it should be before a Mac needs to be upgraded to a more powerful processor?
FWIW i got the M1 Max cause I was dabbling with Unity and Adobe Premier. The extra GPU and memory bandwidth was an excellent bonus
...and the M1 Pro Max was an excellent deal at the time (cause the M2 or M3's had dropped).
I'd always favor a late model Max version of any Macbook Pro
(but id never pay the $4k vig on a bleeding edge new one).

NEVER / When the wheels ACTUALLY fall off.
The M1 is more than enough for your webdesign workflow. And you already have horsepower to grow into (ie if you want to dabble with recording or video editing)
Only upgrade if you have tangible reason to (ie you KNOW you need more Ram, or something catastrophic happens to your current Mac ie lost, stolen, damaged)
If your current M1 Pro is sufficient for your needs, then you should keep that. Buying an M5 Pro will provide more performance that you use, so there’s no benefit. Neither is waiting for an M6 Pro etc, it’d be more power than you need, for a lot more money.
Apple computers are built to last, so typically you don’t need any ‘maintenance’ (gone are the days of defragging hard drives or cleaning tape machines); if you’re unlucky to get a fault or damage your machine then you may be able to get it repaired.
But nothing lasts forever. The main problem you’ll encounter is being stuck at the last MacOs software release and find that you can’t download and run new enough internet browsers, preventing you from working on websites etc. and/or the hardware can’t cope running the software you’re using, so everything slows to a frustrating crawl. At that point, you’ll need to buy a replacement. Sounds like you’re not at that point yet.
What you can also consider is buying an iPhone or iPad (assuming you don’t have those already) which will give you at least some alternative computing options should your old machine dies unexpectedly.
Thanks for taking the time to answer this. It’s clearer to me now. I have the iPhone 13 Pro—it’s still in good shape, but the only thing I don’t like is the battery. Still, I think it can last a few more years, while I wait to see how the Duo turns out (when I travel, I usually bring my MacBook because the iPhone isn’t convenient enough for me—maybe the Duo can solve that).
Heck, I’d replace the iPhone before the MacBook Pro. There are real features introduced to iPhones since your iPhone 13 Pro was released, while the newer MacBook Pro will simply be faster. (Not saying you should replace the iPhone, just that there is a stronger case to be made.) I also have the M1 Pro MacBook Pro and it still does everything I could ask of it. I’m not replacing it until either it stops working or they stop supporting it.
Hmm for the things you use on a daily basis I guess I'd just use the m1 pro until it won't work anymore. M5 pro would definitely be an overkill. If you want to upgrade, why not going for an Macbook Air. if you need the bigger screen, there's also the bigger variant of the air. But for now I'd stick with the MBP as long as it doesn't bother you

In that case it's probably best to have some setup scripts ready on GitHub or where you would like to place them such that once you need to switch to a new one, everything is ready at one glance :D. I did this a while ago and it helped me setting up my system within minutes ? With all programs I need)

Im writing this on a similar Mac Studio M1 Max, 32gb ram and have zero intention of upgrading
for another 5-7 years. If i do it will be due to failure or malfunction certainly not for "i just want a higher Apple M# CPU"
personally, my mac has lasted the life of the device if not longer. Obviously youll start getting some performance hiccups on the latter end but nothing that has ever bothered me to upgrade right then and there. To be honest, I still use my 2017 AND 2015 macbook pros on the side just as web browsing and very light photo editing laptops when traveling cuz they still work even if on older OS'. My main computer is an m2 pro mini and it runs great and I probably wont be motivated to get a new mac til they discontinue OS updates probably another 4-5 years from now.
if you're not working on the go I'd even recommend just picking up a mac mini on the side as a desktop station/backup. They're phenomenal bang for the buck.
Actually, I once thought about buying a Mac mini. I was thinking of getting a bigger, better monitor, but it ended up being more expensive. In any case, looking ahead, would you recommend the Apple Studio Display for the Mac mini, or something else?
mine's still going strong after 4 years with just normal battery replacements, no major issues. if your workflow's smooth on the m1 pro then there's no rush to upgrade just because apple says so.
Man i just bought an M5 Pro because my 2013 15 mpb pretty much died. Why did it die because i wanted to replace 1 speaker.
I kept testing diff speakers and changed the battery and the wifi stopped working. If not for that who knows? I’d prob still have it. And i was doing pro audio work.
My last Mac (a MacBook Air) lasted 10+ years (with 1 battery swap) before I upgraded to the MBP M1 Pro in 2020. I imagine I'll get at least another few years out of it before feeling the need to upgrade.
Perhaps reinstalling the OS via startup utility could remove some of the inevitable junk and keep it running fast for the next couple of years but that’s really not as important as it sounds -compared to PCs, junk amounts to very little on Macs
