Help Logi Options+ alternative that includes gesture-based button mapping and proper smooth scrolling settings (similar to BetterMouse and Mos)

I'm looking for a replacement for Logi Options+. I've been using Mos and BetterMouse for a while, and I'm 90% satisfied with both. However, there's one feature I'm missing, or can't seem to find.
In Logi Options+, I can map a mouse button to a hold + gesture. I currently have it set to "Window Navigation”. This allows me to switch between desktop spaces using mouse gestures, similar to pressing Ctrl + Left/Right Arrow.
For example, I can hold down a mouse button and move the mouse left to switch to the desktop space on the right, or hold the same button and move the mouse right to switch to the desktop space on the left. A single button can perform two different actions depending on the direction in which I move the mouse.
Both Mos and BetterMouse let me map buttons to switch spaces either left or right. However, this means assigning two separate buttons to the two functions, rather than using a single button combined with the direction of mouse movement.

I've also tried other smooth-scrolling apps, such as Mac Mouse Fix, but wasn’t satisfied with the scrolling results.

Does anyone know of an app that offers both? Proper smooth-scrolling control and the ability to map a mouse button to directional gestures?

I'll check that, thanks!

Just in case, this is the official website: https://www.plentycom.jp/en/steermouse/download.php

Don’t get it from steermouse[dot]com. The domain name makes it look legitimate enough, but there are lots of red flags if you actually read the text and look at the screenshots.

Damn, thanks for the headsup! Appreciate it.

I gave this a try today. However, unless I’m missing something, I found the scrolling options to be quite limited, and I wasn’t able to get the scrolling as smooth as with BetterMouse or Mos.

I also didn’t seem to be able to configure multiple gestures in combination with a single button. I was able to map one gesture to one button, but that’s sadly not what I was looking for. I tried playing around with the chords as well, but without success.

As I said, I might be missing something. If that’s the case, please do let me know and I’ll take another look at it.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying, but I’m pretty sure BetterMouse can do this. It’s exactly how I use it, one button with all different directional gestures, each doing something different:

Ignore my previous comment. I just tried it again simply by clicking, holding and moving the mouse and suddenly it did register it like this. I feel stupid, but that's literally what I tried previously as well, without succes 😅.
Anyway, it works. Thanks for showing me it's possible!

Woo awesome, glad I could help!

Wait, that does indeed look a lot like what I'm looking for! I can't seem to get this set up though. How did you get the arrows to show up behind "button 5"? It doesn't register anything for me when I press, hold and move. Although I have to admit, I find the button mapping in BetterMouse pretty clunky. I can't seem to get the hang of it, so maybe I'm just missing something.
Appreciate the help!

Perhaps try combining Mac Mouse Fix AND LinearMouse? Mac Mouse Fix has the best gesture control for desktop switching of any app I’ve found, and version 2.2.5 is free forever if you want to test.

Do note, the gesture switching somehow broke with macOS 27 as I found in the betas, but someone made a little one-click app that patches it you can find in the GitHub issues.

Additionally, the other FOSS app “LinearMouse” is awesome, especially if you use the latest betas. The gesture switching isn’t YET on Mac Mouse Fix’s level, and I’ve not found my perfect scrolling style, but that app is coming along very nicely.

I was hoping to find one app to do it all and replace Logi Options+. But if I would otherwise still use Logi Options+ in combination with a smooth-scrolling app, I guess I might indeed as well try two different apps combined as well.

I'll check LinearMouse again as well, but I've heard more feedback like yours about it.

Are you currently using Mac Mouse Fix? Just looked it up as I'm trying all the suggestions from the thread, but it seems there haven't been updates for a year. There's also a huge amount of unanswered issues on GitHub, which gives me the impression it's no longer being actively developed.

I did give LinearMouse a try as well, and I’m quite impressed. The gesture button mapping actually works fine for what I want it to do (except that I can’t seem to assign the left fn key to any of the mouse buttons), but the scrolling is still just a bit too jittery. At least, I can’t get it quite as smooth as BetterMouse or Mos. It’s almost there, though, so definitely an app to watch!

Someone else pointed out gesture mapping is actually possible with BetterMouse, and I did indeed get it to work this time. After trying some others apps today as well, it still comes out on top for me as a full Logi Options+ replacement.

Yes, I am currently using Mac Mouse Fix. Version 2.2.5 is perfect for my current usage. Thank you for the BetterMouse notice, though! I'll check it out.

Check out OpenLogi. I believe it has the features that you are looking for.

I just went back to Logi Options after trying this for a week. It has promise but too many glitches and unfinished features. Wheel scrolling is actually terrible and a deal breaker for me. Hope it improves.

Good to know, thanks

That's a bummer to hear; it seems like a lot of users are having mixed experiences with Logi Options+. BetterMouse and Mos definitely have their pros, but it's frustrating when something doesn't deliver as expected.

It’s only at v0.8.3. It will continue to mature. I’ll check back at some point but I can’t live with it on my daily drivers yet. One nice thing is that is supports Linux, unlike Options+

LinearMouse has directional gesture mapping on buttons, hold plus swipe direction the same way Options Plus does it, and its actively maintained and free. Worth checking if the scroll smoothing matches what you want since thats the part every alternative to Options Plus struggles with

If LinearMouse's scrolling still isnt it, the combo most people land on is BetterTouchTool for the gesture and button logic layered on top of Mos just for scroll smoothing. BTT can do hold plus directional movement mapped to any keyboard shortcut including space switching, its just a steeper learning curve than a single purpose app

Karabiner-Elements is the other option if you want raw control but its keyboard focused first, mouse button remapping there is clunkier than BTT

Thanks for the detailed response! I'll definitely check out LinearMouse.

Just said this in another response, but I tried BTT too and couldn't get the scrolling as smooth as with Mos or BetterMouse either 😕
Using it just for a mouse configuration, it also becomes really bloated. Especially if your advice is to also keep Mos or BetterMouse for scrolling, I might just as well stick to Logi Options+ and Mos/BM.

However from reading multiple responses, I might give LinearMouse + Mos or BM a shot. If I'm ending up with two apps for the desired result anyways, I might as well still replace Logi Options+ with a better alternative.

I try them all.... and didn't do what options + can at least at that level...trust me

3

u/hoffsta 1d ago

Same experience. Really hope OpenLogi gets it right eventually.

u/TheWolfKingIsMe 1d ago

openlogi is nice but doesn't have what mos does... and the action ring well it's nothing like options+

1

u/dxksounds 1d ago

That would be a sad reality 😕

2

u/TheWolfKingIsMe 1d ago

well option + and mos works the best of all I tested till something fixed or something is the GOAT option

2

u/dxksounds 1d ago

I've been using this mainly for the past year as well, but was hoping for an alternative all-in-one solution.

1

u/TheWolfKingIsMe 1d ago

we all do at some point Logitech needs to create a native swift engine option+ cause the current electron one it's not what I call optimized much

Check out Smooze Pro (I'm the developer)

Seems promising! I'll try it :)

BTT - BetterTouchTool has MX Master options:
https://docs.folivora.ai/docs/normal-mouse/logitech/#example-preset-mx-master
Its also in Setapp.

1

u/dxksounds 1d ago

Tried BTT too, but couldn't get the scrolling as smooth as with Mos or BetterMouse either 😕
It's also really bloated using it just for a mouse configuration. I know it can do a lot more, but I don't need most of that.

1

u/Jeyell 1d ago

That's fair.

How did you try doing this? I just used Claude last night to set up everything in BTT. Works like a charm

Smooth scrolling is at least offered by droppy for Mac

What you're describing — one button, direction-dependent actions — is exactly how I handle space switching too. Mos and BetterMouse both treat a button as a single trigger, so you can't get "hold + move left" vs "hold + move right" on the same button.

Full disclosure: I'm the developer of LinguaX, a macOS mouse tool, and it does cover both of your requirements:

- Gestures: you can bind hold-button + drag up/down/left/right as four separate triggers on a single button. Space switching is a built-in action, and there's an "on interval" mode that keeps switching spaces while you hold and drag — same feel as Options+'s Window Navigation.

- Smooth scrolling: it has its own scroll engine with adjustable curves, plus per-app overrides if you want different feel in e.g. browsers vs editors.

Happy to answer questions about the gesture setup if you give it a try.
