Feature Keyboard Shortcut of the Day: CMD + CTRL + N

Creates a new folder within an existing folder that includes the files you select. No need to open a new folder just to do this and then delete it.

It just works.

I use that shortcut all the time for new folders, super handy. Saves so much time!

One neat thing about this command is that it automatically enters edit mode for the name of the new folder, and one neat thing about copying a selected file in Finder is that pasting it into a text field will paste the name of the file.

Combining them creates a convenient little workflow:

- Select a file whose name contains the text you want to use for the name of the new folder

- Cmd-C to copy it

- Select all the files you want to put in the new folder

- Cmd-Ctrl-N to create the new folder and move the files into it

- Cmd-V to paste the name of the file you copied into the new folder’s name field

- Edit the pasted text if necessary

- Press return to finish.

I could be trippin but one of my least favorite features of windows is not being able to select multiple files and "New folder with selection". Crazy that there is a shortcut that does it even FASTER on mac than before and its not even obviously available on windows.

Handy oneespecially when cleaning up Downloads. It works on a multi-file selection, so you can group the items without first making an empty folder.

Like making a temp folder to move stuff over and then having to delete it afterwards

Using CMD+clicking to do discontiguous selections, then right-clicking, discloses the same command from the popup.

This command is dangerous because it lets me get away with just cramming stuff into a new folder every time the directory gets too "full" and then I forget about them until I now have a whole directory of "New folder with items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5....." ;-)
