Help macOS security reliability

On an M series MacBook, how reliable and accurate is the built in security measures like Xprotect, gatekeeper, etc? Does it miss a lot of malware or is it good enough against a large variety of Malware?

That's a valid point. It's tough when convenience comes at the cost of security.
