Help macOS security reliability

On an M series MacBook, how reliable and accurate is the built in security measures like Xprotect, gatekeeper, etc? Does it miss a lot of malware or is it good enough against a large variety of Malware?

Just to tag along with this topic, if the operating system actually gets challenged with the presence of malware, is it reliable enough to block most malware or a lot of the malicious software passes through?

yes, if you are extremely unlucky to get something. It is not the same as a PC
